Britney Spears' Mother Lynne Spears Speaks Out About Singer's Conservatorship

Britney Spears' Mother Lynne Spears Speaks Out About Singer's Conservatorship

  • In a rare interview, Lynne Spears has spoken out about her daughter Britney Spears' recent turmoil. The singer recently called to end what she said was her "abusive" 13-year conservatorship.

Britney Spears‘ mother Lynne Spears has spoken out about her daughter’s recent turmoil. With a whisper.

Lynne, 66, spoke to The New Yorker by phone about her daughter in comments published more than a week after the 39-year-old singer said in a June 23 court testimony that she wanted to end what she called her “abusive” 13-year conservatorship, largely controlled by the star’s father and Lynne’s ex-husband, Jamie Spears.

“I got mixed feelings about everything,” Britney’s mother was quoted as saying in a phone interview. “I don’t know what to think…It’s a lot of pain, a lot of worry.”

She added, “I’m good. I’m good at deflecting.”

The article was published on Saturday, July 3, and penned by journalists Ronan Farrow, who in 2018 won a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on the #MeToo movement, and Jia Tolentino. They wrote that Lynne made her comments in June, was “fastidiously polite as she declined to answer detailed questions about the case” and “spoke in a whisper and apologized that she might have to hang up abruptly if other family members walked in and discovered her speaking to a reporter.” The date of the phone call was not disclosed.

This marked the most detailed public comments Lynne has made in response to her daughter’s legal battle, although she has voiced support for the singer’s well-being over the years.

Many of Britney’s fans have accused her entire family of taking advantage of the singer’s success, ignoring or even enabling her alleged mistreatment and not speaking out more in support of her or endorsing their #FreeBritney campaign to end her conservatorship, first put in place in 2008 following her psychiatric hospitalization. Lynne has never commented publicly about Britney’s bid to regain her independence, which began as a push to remove Jamie, 68, as a conservator in 2019.

However, in April of that year, as the fans’ campaign launched following renewed personal and legal turmoil for the singer, Lynne did like social media posts from people who voiced concern for her daughter. A month later, Britney’s mother filed court documents requesting to be informed of all matters pertaining to her daughter’s conservatorship.

Britney’s turmoil, past and present, and the #FreeBritney campaign are the focus of a recent New York Times-produced Hulu documentary Framing Britney Spears. In February, paparazzi asked Lynne at Los Angeles International Airport about what she thought about the film. She did not respond to the question but did give a non-verbal response when asked about her daughter’s well-being.

“She never talks,” an eyewitness told E! News at the time. “She is very kind and very polite. She looked and nodded when asked how Britney was doing.”

A family source also told E! News in February that Lynne, who still lives in the family’s hometown of Kentwood, Louisiana, “comes out every few months and spends a good amount of time with Britney” in Los Angeles. The insider added, “When she isn’t here, they talk all the time. Lynne wants to help Britney and make sure she has the freedom that she deserves.”

This past March, Britney shared on Instagram a throwback clip of her performing, writing in the caption, “Geez … My mom sent this to me and reminded me that I can sing!!!! She said ‘You never sing anymore … you need to again !!!!’ I’ve actually never watched this performance … it’s definitely from a while ago !!!! It’s from one of the first trips I took alone … mostly I just remember saying ‘WOW Singapore’!!!!!”

Britney has not performed since canceling a Las Vegas concert residency in January 2019, citing her father’s health issues. Jamie co-managed Britney’s personal and medical affairs for the first 11 years of her conservatorship before stepping away from those responsibilities in September 2019, citing his undisclosed illness. An outside professional, Jodi Montgomery, later took over the role as a co-conservator. However, Jamie remains in control of his daughter’s estate and is responsible for approving all her expenditures.

In her testimony, which marked her first comments about her conservatorship, Britney slammed her “dad and anyone involved in the conservatorship and my management” and called for it to end without having to undergo an evaluation by a therapist.

“My precious body has worked for my dad for the past f–king 13 years, trying to be so good and pretty,” she said. “So perfect because he works me so hard when I do everything I’m told. And the state of California, my father, ignorant father to take his own daughter, who only has a role with me if I work with him, they get back the whole course and allow him to do that to me? That’s given these people I’ve worked for way too much control.”

Following Britney’s testimony, Jamie’s attorney said in a statement, “Mr. Spears is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain. Mr. Spears loves his daughter and misses her very much.” In March, the singer’s lawyer told CNN that “Jamie believes every single decision he has made has been in her best interest.”

Earlier this week, a judge denied the request from Britney’s court-appointed lawyer to have her father dropped as her co-conservator.

Meanwhile, Britney’s father has petitioned the court to investigate the claims the pop star made in her testimony. And the issue over control of her finances remains up in the air. Also following Britney’s testimony, a financial company that the singer’s lawyer formally requested to co-manage her estate filed to withdraw from the role. A judge has yet to approve that request.

News details continue to emerge about Britney Spears‘ ongoing fight to end her 13-year conservatorship.

On Saturday, July 3, The New Yorker reported that the pop star allegedly called 911 the night before her court hearing, in which she gave a bombshell testimony on Wednesday, June 23.

According to the article, which was written by Ronan Farrow and Jia Tolentino, a person close to Britney, as well as law enforcement in Ventura County, Calif., told the outlet that the musician “called 911 to report herself as a victim of conservatorship abuse.”

Moreover, People confirmed the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department was called before Britney’s hearing, stating that police records show authorities “arrived at her home per her request.”

The New Yorker noted that while California typically allows the public to access emergency calls, the county sealed the records of Britney’s message because it’s an ongoing investigation. Following the singer’s alleged call, the outlet reported that her team began “texting one another frantically,” stating, “They were worried about what Spears might say the next day, and they discussed how to prepare in the event that she went rogue.”

E! News has reached out to Britney and her father Jamie Spears‘ attorneys for comment.

The 39-year-old star addressed a Los Angeles judge on June 29—that E! News was present for—testifying, “They’ve done a good job at exploiting my life. So, I feel like it should be an open court hearing and they should listen to what I have to say.”

“I haven’t done anything in the world to deserve this treatment,” she continued. “It’s not OK to force me to do anything I don’t want to do.”

The “Lucky” singer asked the judge to terminate her conservatorship after saying she’s felt “enslaved” by her father and conservator.

“Nothing has been done to this generation for doing wrong things, but my precious body, who has worked for my dad for the past f–king 13 years, trying to be so good and pretty, so good,” Britney testified. “I’m told the state of California allowed my ignorant father to take his own daughter—who only has a role with me if I work with him—they sat back and allowed him to do that to me? That’s given these people I’ve worked for way too much control.”

She later said that she’s been “traumatized” by her father and described how it’s impacted her mental health.

“I’ve lied and told the whole world ‘I’m okay. And I’m happy.’ It’s a lie,” she told the judge. “I thought just maybe I said that enough. Because I’ve been in denial. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatized. You know, fake it till you make it. But now I’m telling you the truth. Okay? I’m not happy. I can’t sleep. I’m so angry. It’s insane. And I’m depressed. I cry every day.”

Following Britney’s remarks, Jamie’s attorney issued a statement on his behalf, stating, “Mr. Spears is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain. Mr. Spears loves his daughter and misses her very much.”

    Instagram

In March, Jamie’s attorney, Vivian Thoreen, told NBC News, “Britney being safe and not being taken advantage of is his number one priority.”

Vivian echoed similar sentiments when speaking to CNN that same month, stating Jamie “would love nothing more than to see Britney not need a conservatorship…Like any parent, he doesn’t always see eye-to-eye on what Britney may want. But Jamie believes every single decision he has made has been in her best interest.”

On June 30, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge denied a request from Britney’s lawyer, Samuel D. Ingham III, to remove Jamie as her co-conservator, per the court order obtained by E! News. Moreover, Jamie petitioned the court on June 29 to investigate the accusations Britney made in her testimony.

“Given the nature of the allegations and claims, it is critical that the Court confirm whether or not Ms. Spears’s testimony was accurate in order to determine what corrective actions, if any, need to be taken,” Jamie’s filing states, which was obtained by E! News. “It is also imperative for the proper functioning of conservatorship proceedings before this Court that all parties be provided a full and fair opportunity to respond to allegations and claims asserted against them, including by way of an evidentiary hearing.”

At this time, Jamie controls his daughter’s estate and has the authority to approve all of her expenditures. Back in 2008, Britney’s father was appointed as her co-conservator, along with Andrew M. Wallet. Andrew resigned in 2019. In November 2020, a judge decided that Bessemer Trust Co.—a wealth management group—would serve as a co-conservator alongside Jamie.

On July 1, the Bessemer Trust Co. requested a judge remove it from its role as co-conservator “due to changed circumstances” after Britney “claimed irreparable harm to her interests” in the court hearing.

Britney Spears' Dad Jamie Spears Petitions Court to Investigate Alleged Conservatorship Mistreatment

Britney Spears' Dad Jamie Spears Petitions Court to Investigate Alleged Conservatorship Mistreatment

  • Britney Spears' father Jamie Spears and her co-conservator have responded in detail to claims the singer made in her court statement against her conservatorship, and her dad demands an inquiry.
  • Watch: Britney Spears Feels “Hopeful” After Conservatorship Hearing

Britney Spears‘ father Jamie Spears has filed legal documents calling for an investigation into the singer’s claims of mistreatment, which she detailed in a scathing court statement against him and the 13-year conservatorship he continues to partially control.

In a petition filed in Los Angeles on Tuesday, June 29, and obtained by E! News, Jamie, 68, said he is “concerned about the management and care of his daughter,” noting that for the past two years, he has not managed her personal or medical affairs. He does co-manage her estate with a financial company.

Britney’s father was responsible for her personal and financial dealings for more than a decade after he was first made her conservator in 2008, following her psychiatric hospitalization. In her court testimony last week, the pop star called her conservatorship “abusive” and requested that it end without her being evaluated by a therapist.

“Mr. Spears requests instructions and an order from the Court to investigate the veracity of the allegations and claims made by Ms. Spears at the June 23, 2021 status hearing,” Jamie’s filing states. “Given the nature of the allegations and claims, it is critical that the Court confirm whether or not Ms. Spears’s testimony was accurate in order to determine what corrective actions, if any, need to be taken. It is also imperative for the proper functioning of conservatorship proceedings before this Court that all parties be provided a full and fair opportunity to respond to allegations and claims asserted against them, including by way of an evidentiary hearing.”

However, in her testimony, Britney, 39, put a good amount of blame on her father, speaking in detail about life under what she described as his “control.” She said, “My precious body has worked for my dad for the past f–king 13 years, trying to be so good and pretty.” She also alleged receiving unwanted medical and psychiatric care while under conservatorship.

Following her remarks, her first public comments about it, Jamie’s lawyer said in a statement to the court that the star’s father “is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain. Mr. Spears loves his daughter and misses her very much.”

The attorney has previously said Jamie believes ever decision he’s made has been in Britney’s “best interest.”

In 2019, Jodi Montgomery was made the singer’s temporary conservator of her person, or manager of her personal and medical affairs, after Jamie stepped aside from such duties due to his own health issues. This past March, Britney’s court-appointed attorney, Sam Inghamfiled papers requesting that Jodi replace Jamie in the role permanently.

Jodi’s lawyer said in a statement to E! News on Wednesday, June 30, “I can state unequivocally that Jodi Montgomery has been a tireless advocate for Britney and for her well-being. While she does not control Britney’s financial assets, she is responsible for her personal care, and if Britney wants any issue brought up to the Court, Ms. Montgomery is and has always been ready, willing, and able to do so. From the very beginning of her appointment in September 2019, Ms. Montgomery and the medical team that she assembled have had one primary goal—to assist and encourage Britney in her path to no longer needing a conservatorship of the person.”

    photos

In her court testimony, Britney testified about her physical and mental health treatment, alleging that she was put on psychiatric medication that she “never wanted to be on to begin with.” The singer, a mother of two sons and who is dating Sam Asghari, also told the court she wants to marry again and have a baby but is unable to because she claims “so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor” to take out a birth control IUD that was put inside her body.

In his statement, Jamie reiterated he is not involved in decisions regarding his daughter’s personal or medical affairs, adding, “Unlike Ms. Montgomery and Mr. Ingham, Mr. Spears does not speak or meet with Ms. Spears’ medical team, and he is not permitted to nor does he have the opportunity to provide any input into his daughter’s current medical treatment, diagnosis, or therapy. Nor does Mr. Spears participate in or discuss Ms. Spears’ personal affairs with her, such as issues related to her self-care, marriage, and reproductive desires. These are issues under the purview of Ms. Montgomery as Ms. Spears’ conservator of the person, and issues that Ms. Spears presumably discusses with her court-appointed attorney, Mr. Ingham.”

Jodi’s lawyer said in their statement, “As to Britney’s right to marry, that is unaffected by the conservatorship under Probate Code §1900. As to family planning, that is also unaffected by the conservatorship. If Britney needs any assistance with either, Ms. Montgomery has and will be there to provide any assistance needed to Britney. Britney’s choice to marry and to start a family have never been impacted by the conservatorship while Ms. Montgomery has been conservator of the person.”

Jamie noted in his filing that in past years when he was in charge of his daughter’s personal affairs, he “never prevented” her from getting married. While she did not end up walking down the aisle again, Britney was engaged to her former agent Jason Trawick for just over a year until they split in 2013. During their relationship, he briefly served as her co-conservator.

In his March 2021 filing requesting that Jodi be made Britney’s conservator of her personal and medical affairs, Britney’s lawyer cited a 2014 order that determined the pop star had an “incapacity to consent to any form of medical treatment,” CNN reported. In his recent filing, Jamie claimed the attorney “incorrectly” stated that Britney’s alleged incapacity to consent to treatment “was determined by order filed in this matter.” The singer’s father’s petition read, “But there was no such finding and there is no such order.”

    Matt Baron/Shutterstock

Jamie also said in his petition that based on his daughter’s recent court testimony, “it is unclear if she is even aware of and agrees with” the statements made in her lawyer’s request to appoint Jodi, “including specifically that she lacks capacity of give informed consent for her own medical treatment.” Jamie added, “This is something that should also be further investigated by the Court.”

Jodi’s attorney said in Wednesday’s statement, “Since being appointed in September 2019, Ms. Montgomery has tirelessly acted in Britney’s best interests with the approval of her doctors and the oversight of the Court.”

The co-conservator’s lawyer also said, “While it is Ms. Montgomery’s professional duty to be Britney’s protector and advocate, honoring her wishes and seeing to her best interests while Britney is under conservatorship, it is her sincere personal wish that Britney continues to make meaningful progress in her well-being so that her conservatorship of the person can be terminated. Ms. Montgomery looks forward to presenting a comprehensive Care Plan to the Court setting forth a path for termination of the conservatorship for Britney, and Ms. Montgomery looks forward to supporting Britney through that process.”

Where Kevin Federline's Relationship With Britney Spears Stands 15 Years After Split

  • Toxic? Kevin Federline's wishes for Britney Spears are far from it. Amid the pop star's conservatorship battle, here's where the father of her sons stands.
  • Watch: What Kevin Federline Wants for Ex Britney Spears

While Britney Spears fights to cut legal ties with one man in her life, here’s where another—her ex-husband Kevin Federline—stands.

As fans well know, the pop icon was married to Federline, formerly her backup dancer, for two years before she filed for divorce in November 2006. By that point, they were parents to sons Sean Preston, now 15, and Jayden James, currently 14. Federline’s attorney Mark Kaplan confirmed in February that the mom and dad continue to share custody with Federline taking the kids 70 percent of the time.

Of course, their short, but eventful union was more than a decade ago. Now with Spears’ bombshell testimony regarding her long-running conservatorship making headlines, Kaplan shared where the father of six stands in the situation dominating headlines.

“They share a custodial relationship with the kids and nothing has changed as far as he’s concerned because the conservatorship is still in place,” the powerhouse lawyer explained to E! News. “If something changes in that regard, there will have to be some further dialogue about what the status quo is at that time.”

According to Kaplan, Federline wishes his ex well, which would ultimately benefit their relationship as co-parents.

“Kevin wants her to be happy and healthy because she deserves that and that’s the best possible way for the custodial parent to be exercising custody,” Kaplan said. “So he hopes that she is taking actions that promote her happiness and well-being because that’s what would best serve her role as a custodial parent.”

Though Spears finally got to have her voice heard through the candid and deeply personal testimony she shared, peace remains elusive for the 39-year-old star, a longtime target of the paparazzi.

While recently vacationing in Hawaii after the hearing, the performer sounded off agains the photographers on social media and accused them of misrepresenting her in photographs.

“So being here in Maui is pretty crazy now,” the singer wrote, “the paps know where I am and it’s really not fun !!!! It’s pretty hard going anywhere cause these silly faces keep popping up to take my picture [camera and rolling-eyes emoji] … but not only do they take my picture … they distort my body and mess with the image and it’s embarrassing [grimacing, flushed and upside-down face emojis] !!!!!”

  • Just six days after Britney Spears gave a shocking testimony during a court heart hearing about her conservatorship battle, ex Kevin Federline addressed the matter through his attorney.

Add Kevin Federline to the list of Britney Spears supporters.

Less than a week after his ex-wife delivered shocking testimony about her ongoing 13-year conservatorship battle, Kevin’s attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, revealed the father of six’s thoughts on the matter. Federline is focused on his and Spears’ sons Sean, 15, and Jayden, 14, noted Kaplan. “The best thing would be for their mom to be healthy and happy,” Kaplan shared in a June 29 statement to People. “And if either of those things aren’t true, it doesn’t provide for the best setting for custody to be exercised.”

As for Federline, who ended his three-year marriage with Spears in 2007, Kaplan continued, he “certainly respects Britney and only hopes the best for her because when the best for her is achieved, it’s the best for their kids,” Kaplan continued. “The kids love their mother and he wants there to be a healthy and strong relationship.”

Acknowledging the accusations Spears made with her testimony, Kaplan added, “Britney has not been served well by the conservatorship and it’s not consistent with what she wants.” Kaplan also shared that he feels Spears should be able to end the conservatorship that has been in place since the singer’s 2008 hospitalization, stating, “I think that she should be able to challenge that. And if it’s what’s best for her, Kevin supports it.”

Kaplan also explained he believes it’s for the best for Spears’ voice “to be heard.”

One claim of note, he said, was Spears stating that she was reportedly given lithium. “If it was necessary, we have to be concerned about whether she’s okay and if it’s no longer necessary, that’s great too,” Kaplan said. “Just want to make sure that all of the considerations, how she’s doing are taken into account if she seeks to change the custody order in the post-conservatorship era, if that ever comes.”

  • In a passionate Instagram statement, Christina Aguilera applauded Britney Spears for condemning the conservatorship she says has wrongly controlled her for more than a decade.
  • Watch: Britney Spears Feels “Hopeful” After Conservatorship Hearing

Christina Aguilera is in Britney Spears‘ corner.

In a statement posted to Instagram on June 28, the singer—who rose to fame alongside Britney first on the Mickey Mouse Club and then again as they became internationally-beloved pop stars in the early 2000s—addressed comments made during last week’s conservatorship hearing.

Christina applauded Britney for condemning the strict legal arrangement she says has wrongly controlled her for the past 13 years.

“These past few days I’ve been thinking about Britney and everything she is going through,” the “Candyman” performer wrote. “It is unacceptable that any woman, or human, wanting to be in control of their own destiny might not be allowed to live life as they wish.”

Christina then acknowledged what it must feel like for Britney “to be silenced, ignored, bullied or denied support” by those within her inner circle, describing it as “the most depleting, devastating and demeaning thing imaginable.”

“The harmful mental and emotional damage this can take on a human spirit is nothing to be taken lightly,” she continued. “Every woman must have the right to her own body, her own reproductive system, her own privacy, her own space, her own healing and her own happiness.”

Among the claims included in Britney’s shocking testimony was the revelation that she’s prohibited from removing an IUD, despite wanting to have a baby. Additionally, Britney likened the conservatorship to sex trafficking, going as far to say she’s being “enslaved” by her father and co-conservator, Jamie Spears

While Christina admitted she’s not privy to every detail of Britney’s case, she said she can empathize through their shared experience of fame.

Her statement continued, “The conviction and desperation of this plea for freedom leads me to believe that this person I once knew has been living without compassion or decency from those in control. To a woman who has worked under conditions and pressure unimaginable to most, I promise you she deserves all of the freedom possible to live her happiest life.”

“My heart goes out to Britney,” Christina concluded. “She deserves all the TRUE love and support in the world.”

Christina joins a growing list of Britney’s former collaborators who have publicly supported her request to terminate the conservatorship. Justin Timberlake, who dated Britney from 1999 to 2002, called upon the artist’s family to right their alleged wrongs.

Britney’s younger sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, broke her silence on the matter earlier Monday. The former Zoey 101 star denied involvement in Britney’s legal turmoil, but said she supports her “100 percent.”

Following Britney’s testimony, an attorney read a statement in court on Jamie’s behalf, which read, “Mr. Spears is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain. Mr. Spears loves his daughter and misses her very much.”
