Britney Spears' Mother Lynne Spears Speaks Out About Singer's Conservatorship

Britney Spears' Mother Lynne Spears Speaks Out About Singer's Conservatorship

  • In a rare interview, Lynne Spears has spoken out about her daughter Britney Spears' recent turmoil. The singer recently called to end what she said was her "abusive" 13-year conservatorship.

Britney Spears‘ mother Lynne Spears has spoken out about her daughter’s recent turmoil. With a whisper.

Lynne, 66, spoke to The New Yorker by phone about her daughter in comments published more than a week after the 39-year-old singer said in a June 23 court testimony that she wanted to end what she called her “abusive” 13-year conservatorship, largely controlled by the star’s father and Lynne’s ex-husband, Jamie Spears.

“I got mixed feelings about everything,” Britney’s mother was quoted as saying in a phone interview. “I don’t know what to think…It’s a lot of pain, a lot of worry.”

She added, “I’m good. I’m good at deflecting.”

The article was published on Saturday, July 3, and penned by journalists Ronan Farrow, who in 2018 won a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on the #MeToo movement, and Jia Tolentino. They wrote that Lynne made her comments in June, was “fastidiously polite as she declined to answer detailed questions about the case” and “spoke in a whisper and apologized that she might have to hang up abruptly if other family members walked in and discovered her speaking to a reporter.” The date of the phone call was not disclosed.

This marked the most detailed public comments Lynne has made in response to her daughter’s legal battle, although she has voiced support for the singer’s well-being over the years.

Many of Britney’s fans have accused her entire family of taking advantage of the singer’s success, ignoring or even enabling her alleged mistreatment and not speaking out more in support of her or endorsing their #FreeBritney campaign to end her conservatorship, first put in place in 2008 following her psychiatric hospitalization. Lynne has never commented publicly about Britney’s bid to regain her independence, which began as a push to remove Jamie, 68, as a conservator in 2019.

However, in April of that year, as the fans’ campaign launched following renewed personal and legal turmoil for the singer, Lynne did like social media posts from people who voiced concern for her daughter. A month later, Britney’s mother filed court documents requesting to be informed of all matters pertaining to her daughter’s conservatorship.

Britney’s turmoil, past and present, and the #FreeBritney campaign are the focus of a recent New York Times-produced Hulu documentary Framing Britney Spears. In February, paparazzi asked Lynne at Los Angeles International Airport about what she thought about the film. She did not respond to the question but did give a non-verbal response when asked about her daughter’s well-being.

“She never talks,” an eyewitness told E! News at the time. “She is very kind and very polite. She looked and nodded when asked how Britney was doing.”

A family source also told E! News in February that Lynne, who still lives in the family’s hometown of Kentwood, Louisiana, “comes out every few months and spends a good amount of time with Britney” in Los Angeles. The insider added, “When she isn’t here, they talk all the time. Lynne wants to help Britney and make sure she has the freedom that she deserves.”

This past March, Britney shared on Instagram a throwback clip of her performing, writing in the caption, “Geez … My mom sent this to me and reminded me that I can sing!!!! She said ‘You never sing anymore … you need to again !!!!’ I’ve actually never watched this performance … it’s definitely from a while ago !!!! It’s from one of the first trips I took alone … mostly I just remember saying ‘WOW Singapore’!!!!!”

Britney has not performed since canceling a Las Vegas concert residency in January 2019, citing her father’s health issues. Jamie co-managed Britney’s personal and medical affairs for the first 11 years of her conservatorship before stepping away from those responsibilities in September 2019, citing his undisclosed illness. An outside professional, Jodi Montgomery, later took over the role as a co-conservator. However, Jamie remains in control of his daughter’s estate and is responsible for approving all her expenditures.

In her testimony, which marked her first comments about her conservatorship, Britney slammed her “dad and anyone involved in the conservatorship and my management” and called for it to end without having to undergo an evaluation by a therapist.

“My precious body has worked for my dad for the past f–king 13 years, trying to be so good and pretty,” she said. “So perfect because he works me so hard when I do everything I’m told. And the state of California, my father, ignorant father to take his own daughter, who only has a role with me if I work with him, they get back the whole course and allow him to do that to me? That’s given these people I’ve worked for way too much control.”

Following Britney’s testimony, Jamie’s attorney said in a statement, “Mr. Spears is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain. Mr. Spears loves his daughter and misses her very much.” In March, the singer’s lawyer told CNN that “Jamie believes every single decision he has made has been in her best interest.”

Earlier this week, a judge denied the request from Britney’s court-appointed lawyer to have her father dropped as her co-conservator.

Meanwhile, Britney’s father has petitioned the court to investigate the claims the pop star made in her testimony. And the issue over control of her finances remains up in the air. Also following Britney’s testimony, a financial company that the singer’s lawyer formally requested to co-manage her estate filed to withdraw from the role. A judge has yet to approve that request.

Bessemer Trust Requests to Withdraw From Britney Spears' Conservatorship

Bessemer Trust Requests to Withdraw From Britney Spears' Conservatorship

  • The Bessemer Trust, which Britney Spears' lawyer nominated to join her father Jamie Spears as co-conservator, asked to resign. The financial group wants to be removed after her testimony.
  • Britney Spears‘ new co-conservator has asked to resign, according to the ex parte application filed in court on Thursday, July 1, and obtained by E! News.

Bessemer Trust, a wealth management group, requested that a judge remove it from its role as co-conservator of her estate, “due to changed circumstances” when Britney “claimed irreparable harm to her interests” in court last week.

The company shares the position with her father, Jamie Spears. If the resignation is approved, it would leave Jamie as sole conservator of the pop star’s estate and manager Jodi Montgomery as conservator of her person.

Bessemer Trust, which manages more than $100 billion per The New York Times, said in the court filing that it thought Britney’s conservatorship was voluntary and that she wanted the company to be her co-conservator.

As fans heard in a public court hearing on June 23, Britney said she wanted the conservatorship to end without a medical evaluation, calling the arrangement “abusive.”

“As a result of the conservatee’s testimony at the June 23 hearing,” Bessemer’s filing reads, “Petitioner has become aware that the Conservatee objects to the continuance of her Conservatorship and desires to terminate the conservatorship. Petitioner has heard the Conservatee and respects her wishes.”

The group later added that it “has made this decision to resign only after thoughtful deliberation, keeping the Conservatee’s expressed wishes in mind.”

The financial company told the judge it “has taken no actions as Conservator” since being appointed, explaining that it has not made any decisions, received any assets of her estate and taken no fees.

Britney’s lawyer originally requested to appoint the Bessemer Trust Company as conservator of her estate via court documents filed in Los Angeles last August and obtained by E! News. Britney signed a nomination of conservator, dated Aug. 27. The request explained that the singer did not want her father in charge of her career.

“Conservatee’s father, James P. Spears, is serving alone as conservator of Britney’s estate. Britney is strongly opposed to her father continuing as sole conservator of her estate,” the document read. “Rather, without in any way waiving her right to seek termination of this conservatorship in the future, she strongly prefers to have a qualified corporate fiduciary appointed to serve in this role.”

At a hearing in November 2020, the judge decided that Jamie would not be removed, but the family agreed to add Bessemer Trust Company as co-conservator as well.

That decision appeared to move forward on Wednesday, June 30, when a Los Angeles Superior Court judge formally denied her lawyer’s request to have Jamie removed as co-conservator, according to the court order obtained by E! News.

“The conservator’s request to suspend James P. Spears immediately upon the appointment of Bessemer Trust Company of California, N.A. as sole conservator of estate is denied without prejudice,” per the order.

Though the order was signed on June 30, Bessemer said in the resignation that it has not yet been issued Letters of Conservatorship, so it is not “currently authorized” to act as co-conservator.

The ex parte hearing date is planned for Friday, July 2.

Britney was first placed under a conservatorship in her dad’s care in 2008, though he partially stepped aside (only from being conservator of her person) due to his own medical issues in 2019. Jodi was named Britney’s temporary conservator of her person, and her lawyer requested in March 2021 that Jodi remain in that role permanently.

Last week, Britney broke her silence on her 13-year conservatorship, saying, “I want to end the conservatorship without being evaluated.” The mother of two added during her public testimony, “It’s not OK to force me to do anything I don’t want to do.”

She testified that she is prohibited from removing her IUD birth control and from having any more children under the conservatorship.

Jamie’s attorney read a statement in court to acknowledge her pain: “Mr. Spears is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain. Mr. Spears loves his daughter and misses her very much.”

He filed a petition in court on Tuesday, June 29, to request that a judge “investigate” the allegations she made during her testimony. The 68 year old said he is “concerned about the management and care of his daughter,” as he has not been in charge of her personal or medical affairs since 2019.

Jodi’s lawyer issued a statement to E! News on Wednesday, June 30, to defend her treatment of the “Circus” artist.

“I can state unequivocally that Jodi Montgomery has been a tireless advocate for Britney and for her well-being. While she does not control Britney’s financial assets, she is responsible for her personal care, and if Britney wants any issue brought up to the Court, Ms. Montgomery is and has always been ready, willing, and able to do so,” the statement explained. “From the very beginning of her appointment in September 2019, Ms. Montgomery and the medical team that she assembled have had one primary goal—to assist and encourage Britney in her path to no longer needing a conservatorship of the person.”

Iggy Azalea Supports Britney Spears' Allegation That Jamie Spears Was "Abusive" During Conservatorship

  • In a social media post, Iggy Azalea said Britney Spears is “not exaggerating or lying” after speaking out against her father Jamie Spears.

Iggy Azalea is speaking up and sending her support to Britney Spears.

In a social media post shared on June 30, the rapper shared a glimpse into her experience working with the Grammy winner for their collaboration titled “Pretty Girls.” According to Iggy, she found herself interacting with Britney’s dad Jamie Spears

“It’s basic human decency to at the very least remove a person Britney has identified as abusive from her life. This should be illegal,” Iggy wrote on Twitter. “During the time we worked together in 2015, I personally witnessed the same behavior Britney detailed in regards to her father last week and I just want to back her up & tell the world that: She is not exaggerating or lying.”

Iggy continued, “I saw her restricted from even the most bizarre & trivial things: Like how many sodas she was allowed to drink. Why is that even necessary?”

On June 23, Britney addressed a Los Angeles judge remotely during a hearing on her conservatorship. The 39-year-old mother of two described the conservatorship as “abusive” and asked for it to be terminated.

“The last time I spoke to you by just keeping the conservatorship going and also keeping my dad made me feel like I was dead, like I didn’t matter, like nothing had been done to me, like you thought I was lying or something,” Britney told the judge. “I’m telling you again because I’m not lying. I want to feel heard and I’m telling you this again so maybe you can understand the depth and the degree and the damage… I deserve changes going forward.”

She added, “My dad and anyone involved in this conservatorship, and my management who played a huge role in punishing me…they should be in jail.”

Britney was first placed on a conservatorship back in 2008 when her father was appointed co-conservator of her estate. After Britney’s testimony, an attorney shared a statement on behalf of Jamie. “Mr. Spears is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain,” the statement read. “Mr. Spears loves his daughter and misses her very much.”

E! News has reached out to Jamie and Britney’s attorneys for comment on Iggy’s claims and has not heard back.

In her latest social media post, Iggy also alleged that Jamie asked her to sign an NDA before her Billboard Music Awards performance with Britney. If she didn’t, Iggy alleged that “he would not allow me on stage.”

“The way he went about getting me to sign a contract, sounded similar to the tactics Britney spoke about last week in regards to her Las Vegas show,” Iggy wrote. “Britney Spears should not be forced to co-exist with that man when she’s made it clear it is negatively impacting her mental health.”

In courtroom testimony, Britney alleged that Jamie supported her being put on lithium and monitored by nurses at her home after she said no to a Las Vegas residency. “Not only did my family not do a goddamn thing, my dad was all for it,” Britney testified. “Anything that happened to me had to be approved by my dad.”

Back in March, Jamie’s attorney spoke to CNN saying, “Jamie is not suggesting that he is the perfect dad or that he would receive any ‘Father of the Year’ award. Like any parent, he doesn’t always see eye-to-eye on what Britney may want. But Jamie believes every single decision he has made has been in her best interest.”

And in a petition filed in Los Angeles on June 29, and obtained by E! News, Jamie said he is “concerned about the management and care of his daughter,” noting that for the past two years, he has not managed her personal or medical affairs. “Mr. Spears requests instructions and an order from the Court to investigate the veracity of the allegations and claims made by Ms. Spears at the June 23, 2021 status hearing,” Jamie’s filing stated.

Britney Spears Testifies That She's Prohibited From Removing Her IUD Under Conservatorship

Britney Spears Testifies That She's Prohibited From Removing Her IUD Under Conservatorship

  • Britney Spears broke her silence in court, sharing that she wants to get married and have another baby. However, she alleged she isn't allowed to remove her birth control under her conservatorship.

Britney Spears is making her hopes and dreams crystal clear.

The pop star revealed she wants “the real deal,” to get married and have a baby, she said during her public testimony in a court hearing about her conservatorship on Wednesday, June 23.

However, she claimed she isn’t allowed to get pregnant under the legal arrangement, which was put in place in 2008, because her conservators won’t approve her removing her birth control.

“I was told, right now in the conservatorship, I’m not able to get married or have a baby,” Britney told the judge. “I have an [IUD] inside of myself right now so I don’t get pregnant.”

She added, “I deserve to have the same rights as anybody does by having a child, a family, any of those things.”

She has two sons, 15-year-old Sean and 14-year-old Jayden, from her marriage to Kevin Federline from 2004 to 2007. The “Toxic” singer is currently dating fitness expert Sam Asghari, who showed his support for her by posting a selfie while wearing a Free Britney shirt ahead of the court battle.

Her desire to have more kids was just one of the revelations during the hearing, where she made it clear that she does not want her father, Jamie Spears, to control her career as co-conservator of her estate.

In November 2020, Britney’s lawyer Samuel D. Ingham III argued in court that she is afraid of her father and would not perform as long as he was in charge. The judge did not suspend Jamie but added the Bessemer Trust group as a co-conservator.

Earlier this month, The New York Times reported that Britney accused her father of having “too much control” in her life as early as five years ago, citing confidential court records that E! News has not independently verified. A court investigator wrote in 2016, “She articulated she feels the conservatorship has become an oppressive and controlling tool against her.”

Fans have been rallying around the #FreeBritney movement to end her conservatorship, which gained steam after the “Framing Britney Spears” documentary came out this year. Social media users also began decoding her Instagram messages, as she assured fans in April, “Yes, I’m totally fine. I’m extremely happy. I have a beautiful home, beautiful children. I’m taking a break right now, because, um, I’m enjoying myself.”

Per her court hearing on Wednesday, that’s not the case. She said that the conservatorship is abusive, explaining that she wants it to end.

According to Jamie’s attorney, Vivian Thoreen, he’s trying to protect her from exploitation.

“I understand that every story needs a villain, but people have it so wrong here,” Vivian said on Good Morning America in February. “This is a story about a fiercely loving, dedicated and loyal father who rescued his daughter from a life-threatening situation. People were harming her, and they were exploiting her. Jamie saved Britney’s life.”

During the June 23 hearing, Jamie’s attorney read a statement on his behalf: “Mr. Spears is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain. Mr. Spears loves his daughter and misses her very much.”
