American Idol Alums: Where Are They Now?

American Idol Alums: Where Are They Now?

  • From Kelly Clarkson and Adam Lambert to Fantasia Barrino and Carrie Underwood, find out what some of your favorite American Idol alums are up since their season ended.
  • Watch: Fantasia Barrino – 2019 Grammy Awards Glambot

Nearly 20 years ago, the world became infatuated with a certain televised singing competition.

Long before Blake Shelton spun around in a giant red chair on The Voice or The X-Factor introduced fans to One Direction, there was American Idol. It was one of the first shows to find a new solo artist determined by the hearts and minds of the people…a real democratic rise to stardom, if you will.

Not only did it help skyrocket Ryan Seacrest into superstardom, but it also gifted us with Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and countless other household names whose music we are still listening to on repeat. And today, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie are making sure America’s talent is still getting a chance to shine thanks to the reboot of the beloved franchise. (The original FOX hit signed off air in 2016 after 15 seasons and made its grand return to ABC in March 2018.)

Ranking All of American Idol‘s Judges

Now, in honor of Fantasia Barrino‘s, birthday, we’re taking a trip down memory lane and checking in on some contestants of years past!

    Phillip Phillips

After Idol, the star rose to the top of the charts with his hit single, “Home,” which also served as a theme song for NBC’s coverage of the 2012 Summer Olympics. In 2015, he married his girlfriend, Hannah Blackwell, in a small ceremony while surrounded by his family and friends. Four years later, in 2019, they welcomed their first child together, a son named Patch

    Lauren Alaina

The country darling finished second to Scotty McCreery, but she got her record deal and released her studio debut, Wildflower, in October 2011. Following her time on Idol, the singer presented with Scotty at the 2011 CMT Music Awards, made her Grand Ole Opry debut and even performed with Martina McBride at the CMA Music Festival. In 2017, she got her first nod from the CMA’s when she was nominated for Best New Artist at the 2017 CMA’s following her success with her album, Road Less Traveled. She even made her move to the big screen when she starred in a film of the same name as her album, which goes back to her country girl roots. Her latest hit includes “Ladies in the 90s.” Most recently, she starred on season 28 of Dancing With the Stars.

    Casey Abrams

The season 10 contestant only finished sixth—and that was partly because the judges used their one save of the season five weeks beforehand—but he was a cult fave. He performed on the Idols Live tour, cut a cover of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” with fellow finalist (and rumored flame) Haley Reinhart, and ultimately signed with jazz label Concord. His self-titled debut album was released in 2012, and most recently, the star released an album named I Put A Spell On You, in which he delivers a soulful renditions of popular hits.

    Scotty McCreery

The season 10 winner was the first Idol champ since Ruben Studdard to have his first album, Clear as Day, debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. He was named New Artist of the Year at the 2011 American Country Awards and sang the national anthem before Game 1 of the World Series that same year. In June 2018, the “This Is It” and “Five More Minutes” singer married longtime girlfriend Gabi Dugal

    Adam Lambert

If publicity were a prize, the eighth season’s controversial runner-up is a grand-slam winner. Since his time on the reality show, he’s released several albums, headlined tours, received countless nominations (including a Grammy nod), followed in Freddie Mercury’s footsteps touring as the frontman for Queen and has even starred in Fox’s remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Not to forget that he briefly filled in as a guest judge on Idol. The singer also helped open up the 2019 Oscars with a performance of “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions.”

    Bo Bice

The season four runner-up (to Carrie Underwood) is now married with three boys and a girl. Despite suffering serious health problems in 2006, the Southern rocker has released three hit albums since his stint on Idol.

    Gabby Barrett

After coming in third on season 16 of Idol, the “I Hope” country singer focused on finishing her album. “I’m excited to play Stagecoach. And touring with Brad Paisley is the cherry on top to everything,” she told E! News. “It’s crazy to go on tour with him.” Most recently, she and fellow alum Cade Foehner welcomed their first baby together.

    Lee DeWyze

After joining the top 10 finalists’ summer tour, he’s now solo music career. DeWyze married model-actress Jonna Walsh, who he met on the set of his first music video following Idol. Nowadays, the star is a well-established singer-songwriter, with his tracks making it onto shows like The Walking Dead

    Kris Allen

Nearly eclipsed in the media spotlight by his runner-up, Adam Lambert, the eighth season champ has enjoyed quiet success with his self-titled second album. Released in November 2009, it debuted at no. 11 on the Billboard 200, and one of its singles, “I Need to Know,” was recently featured on an episode of The Vampire Diaries. In the meantime, the star has been growing his family, having welcomed three children with his high school sweetheart Katy O’Connell.

    Taylor Hicks

After his season-five victory, the silver fox’s eponymous album went platinum and he starred in a Broadway production of Grease. In more recent years, the singer has made the switch from music to TV as a host of a show called State-Plate, which focuses on the premise of farm-to-table eating. There were once rumors of him joining the reboot of the show, with him saying, “I’m just gonna be tight lipped about everything. I’m not confirming or denying it.”

    Crystal Bowersox

Runner-up to Lee DeWyze in season nine, the Janis Joplin-esque rocker married musician Brian Walker and released her first album, Farmer’s Daughter, in December 2010. She lost her label deal when RCA disbanded Arista, J Records and Jive Records, but she made her acting debut on the second season of ABC’s Body of Proof. In May 2013, the singer split from her husband. After her divorce she told The Boot that her second album was “the next chapter of my life.”

    Ruben Studdard

Before being dumped by his record label (along with Taylor Hicks) in early 2008, the Velvet Teddy Bear scored a Grammy nomination and released a handful of successful albums. Then, in 2013, the singer starred as one of the contestants on The Biggest Loser and quickly became a fan-favorite. He was eliminated twice, but took away valuable lessons from the show. He even reunited with Clay Aiken for a Broadway holiday show.

    Fantasia Barrino

This artist has had her fair share of drama, but she has also had her fair share of success in the years following her time on Idol. The singer says she was able to find happiness by marrying herself, before she committed to marrying her husband Kendall Taylor in 2015. While on the talk show Harry, the star said, “I married myself because I felt like before true love could come I needed to learn how to love myself again, and so for me I forgot about myself.” In November 2020, she announced she was expecting!

    Kelly Clarkson

Much like a kiss, you never forget the first one. So it is with the winner of Idol‘s inaugural season. The mom of River and Remy has come a long way since winning American Idol in 2002, with many awards and number one hits under her belt. She’s since starred on NBC’s The Voice as a judge and is now hosting her own daytime talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show.

    Elliott Yamin

After American Idol, the season five finalist, who had a hit with the song “Wait for You,” went to Angola where he worked alongside former Idol judge Kara DioGuardi to raise awareness for Malaria No More. Elliott also made news in 2010 after experiencing Chile’s earthquake and living to tweet about it.

    Carrie Underwood

From the moment she stepped onto the Idol stage, Underwood cemented her place in pop culture. Sure enough, not only did she win season four, but she’s also gone on to become country music’s reigning princess. The singer went on to co-host the CMA Awards for more than 10 years with fellow artist, Brad Paisley. And between balancing her music career with her hosting duties, the “Jesus Take The Wheel Singer” is a mom to her two sons.

    Clay Aiken

The season two runner-up announced he was gay in September 2008 after fathering a son (via in vitro fertilization), Parker, with partner Jaymes Foster. Since then, the famous red-head switched from music to politics, even making a failed run for Congress in 2016. After losing in the election, the singer released a documentary on his journey. Other than his time in politics, he remains much the same with his sassy remarks about people and things, including American Idol and fellow contestants like Adam Lambert.

    Jennifer Hudson

She may not have won season three, but boy did J-Hud make up for it. Let’s see: First an Oscar, then a Grammy for her performance in The Color Purple and a stint as a judge on The Voice. Not only did the performer showcase her strength and resilience in her career, but she also persevered when she divorced her husband of 10 years. This year, the star will wow once again when she stars as Aretha Franklin in a biopic on the legendary singer.

    Constantine Maroulis

With his big hair and even bigger voice (who can forget his rousing rendition of “Bohemian Rhapsody” during season four?), Constantine was a perfect fit for Broadway’s Rock of Ages, for which he earned a Tony nom.

    David Cook

The season seven winner’s big hit “Time of My Life” may reflect his singing success, but the title could just as easily apply to his endeavors offstage. David visited Ethiopia in 2010 on behalf of the United Nations’ efforts to empower women in that country. He also ran in the Race for Hope in D.C. to raise money for brain cancer research in honor of his brother Adam, who lost his brave fight with the disease in 2009.

    Jordin Sparks

The season six champ set off some serious, well, sparks in 2007. Her Battlefield tour took her to 35 cities around the U.S., and (if that wasn’t enough), she made her Broadway debut in 2010, starring in the musical In the Heights. Her success and good fortune has continued, with the star giving birth to her first son with husband Dana Isaiah in May of 2018.

    Katharine McPhee

Long before Bieber fever, there was McPheever, which has helped Katharine land both singing and acting work, at first most notably in the movie House Bunny, then the Broadway-inspired show Smash and then, the show Scorpion. In terms of her personal life, the star was married for six-years to Nick Cokas before calling it quits. The star seems to be doing just fine now that she’s married to David Foster. They welcomed a baby boy in February 2021.

    David Archuleta

This teenage heartthrob won the affection of America when he starred on the reality show. And now he’s giving the love back. In 2012, the star embarked on a two-year mission for the Church of the Latter Day Saint’s in Chile. Since his return in 2014 he has continued performing. He came out as member of the LGBTQ+ community in June 2021.

    Maddie Poppe

After winning season 16, the “Little Things” singer released her first album. “There is a lot of different sounding songs on the album,” she teased to E! News. “I can’t pick just one [sound] to stick with because I really love them all so much and it’s hard to stay in one vein.”

    Caleb Lee Hutchinson

Since becoming the runner-up of season 16, the singer has focused on releasing new music and enjoying life’s opportunities that come with appearing on the ABC series. “I’ve always loved music and I’ve always wanted to be an artist,” Caleb Lee shared with E! News. “But I learned so much about entertainment. I got to go to Luke Bryan’s last show for his tour and I got to come out and sing a song with him.”

Where Kevin Federline's Relationship With Britney Spears Stands 15 Years After Split

  • Toxic? Kevin Federline's wishes for Britney Spears are far from it. Amid the pop star's conservatorship battle, here's where the father of her sons stands.
  • Watch: What Kevin Federline Wants for Ex Britney Spears

While Britney Spears fights to cut legal ties with one man in her life, here’s where another—her ex-husband Kevin Federline—stands.

As fans well know, the pop icon was married to Federline, formerly her backup dancer, for two years before she filed for divorce in November 2006. By that point, they were parents to sons Sean Preston, now 15, and Jayden James, currently 14. Federline’s attorney Mark Kaplan confirmed in February that the mom and dad continue to share custody with Federline taking the kids 70 percent of the time.

Of course, their short, but eventful union was more than a decade ago. Now with Spears’ bombshell testimony regarding her long-running conservatorship making headlines, Kaplan shared where the father of six stands in the situation dominating headlines.

“They share a custodial relationship with the kids and nothing has changed as far as he’s concerned because the conservatorship is still in place,” the powerhouse lawyer explained to E! News. “If something changes in that regard, there will have to be some further dialogue about what the status quo is at that time.”

According to Kaplan, Federline wishes his ex well, which would ultimately benefit their relationship as co-parents.

“Kevin wants her to be happy and healthy because she deserves that and that’s the best possible way for the custodial parent to be exercising custody,” Kaplan said. “So he hopes that she is taking actions that promote her happiness and well-being because that’s what would best serve her role as a custodial parent.”

Though Spears finally got to have her voice heard through the candid and deeply personal testimony she shared, peace remains elusive for the 39-year-old star, a longtime target of the paparazzi.

While recently vacationing in Hawaii after the hearing, the performer sounded off agains the photographers on social media and accused them of misrepresenting her in photographs.

“So being here in Maui is pretty crazy now,” the singer wrote, “the paps know where I am and it’s really not fun !!!! It’s pretty hard going anywhere cause these silly faces keep popping up to take my picture [camera and rolling-eyes emoji] … but not only do they take my picture … they distort my body and mess with the image and it’s embarrassing [grimacing, flushed and upside-down face emojis] !!!!!”

She continued, “I know my body is not perfect but I definitely do NOT look like how they portray me. It’s rude and it’s mean so paps kindly F–K YOU AND F–K OFF [kiss emojis] !!!!”

(E!, NBC and Peacock are all part of the NBCUniversal family.)

    Cathy Rigby

A pioneer in the sport, she was among the first female athletes to help popularize gymnastics in the nation, thanks to her strong performance at the 1968 Mexico City Games, although she never medaled. Rigby retired after the 1972 Olympics and is perhaps best known for playing the title role in the theatrical musical Peter Pan, which earned her a Tony Award nomination in 1991.

She has been a familiar face to not only theatre fans but also TV viewers, due to serving for many years as an ABC Sports commentator, in addition to appearing on the series The Six Million Dollar Man. Rigby has also been open throughout the years about her previous battle with disordered eating.

The star and husband Tom McCoy share two children, and she has two children from a previous marriage.

    Mary Lou Retton

A defining cultural figure of the 1980s before retiring in 1986, she won five medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. Among those prizes was gold in the all-around, making her the first American woman to achieve this feat in the sport. She shares four children with her ex-husband, former University of Houston quarterback Shannon Kelley, who she split from in 2018.

Outside of athletics, she became vocal in politics, supporting President Ronald Reagan along his 1984 reelection campaign trail and later speaking at the 2004 Republican National Convention. Retton made cameos in the films Scrooged and Naked Gun 33+1⁄3, and more recently, she became the first woman inducted into the Houston Sports Hall of Fame in 2020.

    Shannon Miller

With a total of seven medals, won during the 1992 Barcelona Games and 1996 Atlanta Games, she is the most-awarded female Olympic gymnast in history. After failing to qualify for the 2020 Sydney Games, Miller turned her focus to her schooling, earning a business degree and later a law degree, although she never took the Bar Exam.

Miller went on to appear in fitness videos, published the 2015 autobiography It’s Not About Perfect and is an advocate for preventing childhood obesity. She and second husband John Falconetti share two children.

    Kerri Strug

She is a two-time medalist best known for competing on the vault despite an ankle injury at the 1996 Atlanta Games and later being carried to the podium by coach Béla Károlyi. The memorable feat led to a whirlwind of media moments, including appearances on SNL and Beverly Hills, 90210, plus a visit with President Bill Clinton, and she retired shortly thereafter.

Strug went on to become a schoolteacher and also got involved in politics, including speaking at the 2004 Republican National Convention. Her memoir, Landing On My Feet, A Diary Of Dreams, is in development as a feature film from director Olivia Wilde, with Thomasin McKenzie attached to play the athlete.

She and husband Robert Fischer share two children.

    Dominique Dawes

She competed in the 1992 Barcelona Games, 1996 Atlanta Games and 2000 Sydney Games, winning four medals. This includes the team gold in 1996, making her the first Black gymnast of any nationality to win a gold medal.

Dawes retired after the Sydney Games. She has appeared in multiple music videos, including Missy Elliott‘s “We Run This” in 2006, and played Patty Simcox in a 1990s Broadway revival of Grease

The athlete was named co-chair of President Barack Obama‘s President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition in 2010, and she is also an advocate for autism awareness. Dawes and husband Jeff Thompson share four children.

    Shawn Johnson

She was among the stars of the 2008 Beijing Games, thanks to her four medals, including gold in the balance beam. Shawn retired just before the 2012 London Games, having already become a pop-culture personality due to winning Dancing With the Stars in 2009.

She has remained a media mainstay ever since 2008, notching appearances on a long list of shows that includes The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Celebrity Apprentice, The Challenge: Champs vs. Stars, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Who Wants to be a Millionaire and Family Feud. The star also led the Pledge of Allegiance at the 2008 Democratic National Convention and has authored several books, including the 2016 YA novel The Flip Side

Shawn shares one daughter with NFL player Andrew East, who she married in 2016, and the couple is expecting a boy, as of June 2021. The Olympian has been open about her previous struggles with disordered eating.

    Nastia Liukin

The gymnast nabbed five medals at the 2008 Beijing Games, including gold in the all-around. She retired just before the 2012 London Games and has appeared on such shows as Gossip Girl, Make It or Break It and Hellcats, in addition to making a cameo in the film Stick It. Nastia also competed on Dancing With the Stars in 2015 and released the memoir Finding My Shine in 2015.

In 2018, she and hockey player Matt Lombardi called off their engagement.

    McKayla Maroney

Her two Olympic medals from the 2012 London Games include team gold. After winning silver in the vault that summer, she became a meme when her expression on the podium made her appear to be unimpressed.

Maroney, who announced her retirement in 2016, has since transitioned into both acting and singing. She has appeared on a range of TV shows including Hart of Dixie, Bones and Superstore, and she released her first single, “Wake Up Call,” in 2020.

In 2021, she appeared in a Geico ad, during which she gave her infamous “not impressed” look.

    Gabby Douglas

She was part of the gold-winning teams at both the 2012 London Games and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. She also won gold in the gymnastics all-around in 2016, becoming the first African American to do so.

Douglas retired after the Rio Games and has become a prominent TV and media fixture. She published her 2012 memoir Grace, Gold, and Glory, was the subject of the 2014 Lifetime movie The Gabby Douglas Story and starred with her family in the Oxygen unscripted series Douglas Family Gold.

Other TV appearances include Kickin It and Undercover Boss, along with winning The Masked Dancer in 2020.

    Aly Raisman

The second-most-awarded American Olympic female gymnast behind Miller, Raisman picked up six medals between the 2012 London Games and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, including the floor competition gold in 2012, along with consecutive team golds.

Raisman, who retired after the Rio Games, released her memoir Fierce in 2017 and made a cameo in the 2019 Charlie’s Angels film. She placed fourth on Dancing With the Stars in 2013 and appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in both 2017 and 2018.

Her dating life has included a high-profile relationship with Colton Underwood that ended in 2017, prior to him appearing on The Bachelorette and later leading The Bachelor.

    Laurie Hernandez

The two-time medalist at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games was part of the U.S. gold-winning team. She remains an active gymnast but did not qualify for the Olympic Trials ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Games.

Aside from athletics, Hernandez won season 23 of Dancing With the Stars, becoming the youngest-ever champion at age 16, and served as a reporter on American Ninja Warrior Junior. She also voiced a character on Nickelodeon’s Middle School Moguls, which aired in 2019, and released memoir I Got This in 2017.

Mercedes "MJ" Javid Reveals Where Things Stand Between Tommy & Reza Today

Mercedes "MJ" Javid Reveals Where Things Stand Between Tommy & Reza Today

  • The Shahs of Sunset star gives an update on her two-year-old son Shams and reveals where things really stand between husband Tommy Freight and co-star Reza Farahan. Watch below!
  • Calling a truce.

Shahs of Sunset star Mercedes “MJ” Javid gushed on E! News’ Daily Pop today that she has mended the relationship between co-star Reza Farahan and her husband Tommy Freight. In the June 4 episode, MJ explained to co-hosts Justin Sylvester and Lilliana Vazquez that it was at first a rocky start in repairing things.

“In the beginning it was hard because I just led by my own emotions,” MJ opened up. “I wanted to talk to Reza and I reached out and we had this incredible connection. We felt amazing about it. And then I realized I completely isolated Tommy.”

Reza previously filed for a restraining order against MJ’s husband amidst their ongoing feud. The Shahs star alleged Tommy vandalized his and Adam Neely‘s home in May 2019 amongst other claims of threatening messages. By 2021, MJ and Reza decided to move forward with their decades-long friendship, but Tommy wasn’t too pleased.

“He threw his ring,” MJ admitted. “He was not OK with it but that was a long time ago, and now I really believe in my heart that I’m so optimistic. Even if it’s unrealistic, my goal is for us to do this again, for Tommy and Reza to be able to like [come together] because it’s really important.”

MJ and Tommy welcomed son Shams in April 2019 and his birth changed her perspective on holding on to anger. After a life-threatening delivery, MJ explained she still has “PTSD flashbacks.”

For now, the idea of baby no. 2 is on the back-burner. “I don’t have a definitive answer because the reason why is nothing is guaranteed,” MJ revealed of her possible surrogacy plans. “If you find the surrogate and you implant an embryo, it may not take.”

Instead MJ is completely devoted to her two-year-old son. “I’m so focused on being good to him and figuring out not to screw that up,” she joked. “He’s talking and running and going into school…I don’t think we can handle [another baby] right now.”

And MJ is still looking fierce post-pregnancy in Nina Parker‘s eponymous Macy’s collection.

Plus, what is MJ’s postpartum sex advice for Lilliana? Watch the whole interview for her TMI take on getting it on with a newborn.
