Britney Spears' Dad Jamie Spears Petitions Court to Investigate Alleged Conservatorship Mistreatment

Britney Spears' Dad Jamie Spears Petitions Court to Investigate Alleged Conservatorship Mistreatment

  • Britney Spears' father Jamie Spears and her co-conservator have responded in detail to claims the singer made in her court statement against her conservatorship, and her dad demands an inquiry.

Britney Spears‘ father Jamie Spears has filed legal documents calling for an investigation into the singer’s claims of mistreatment, which she detailed in a scathing court statement against him and the 13-year conservatorship he continues to partially control.

In a petition filed in Los Angeles on Tuesday, June 29, and obtained by E! News, Jamie, 68, said he is “concerned about the management and care of his daughter,” noting that for the past two years, he has not managed her personal or medical affairs. He does co-manage her estate with a financial company.

Britney’s father was responsible for her personal and financial dealings for more than a decade after he was first made her conservator in 2008, following her psychiatric hospitalization. In her court testimony last week, the pop star called her conservatorship “abusive” and requested that it end without her being evaluated by a therapist.

“Mr. Spears requests instructions and an order from the Court to investigate the veracity of the allegations and claims made by Ms. Spears at the June 23, 2021 status hearing,” Jamie’s filing states. “Given the nature of the allegations and claims, it is critical that the Court confirm whether or not Ms. Spears’s testimony was accurate in order to determine what corrective actions, if any, need to be taken. It is also imperative for the proper functioning of conservatorship proceedings before this Court that all parties be provided a full and fair opportunity to respond to allegations and claims asserted against them, including by way of an evidentiary hearing.”

However, in her testimony, Britney, 39, put a good amount of blame on her father, speaking in detail about life under what she described as his “control.” She said, “My precious body has worked for my dad for the past f–king 13 years, trying to be so good and pretty.” She also alleged receiving unwanted medical and psychiatric care while under conservatorship.

Following her remarks, her first public comments about it, Jamie’s lawyer said in a statement to the court that the star’s father “is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain. Mr. Spears loves his daughter and misses her very much.”

The attorney has previously said Jamie believes ever decision he’s made has been in Britney’s “best interest.”

In 2019, Jodi Montgomery was made the singer’s temporary conservator of her person, or manager of her personal and medical affairs, after Jamie stepped aside from such duties due to his own health issues. This past March, Britney’s court-appointed attorney, Sam Inghamfiled papers requesting that Jodi replace Jamie in the role permanently.

Jodi’s lawyer said in a statement to E! News on Wednesday, June 30, “I can state unequivocally that Jodi Montgomery has been a tireless advocate for Britney and for her well-being. While she does not control Britney’s financial assets, she is responsible for her personal care, and if Britney wants any issue brought up to the Court, Ms. Montgomery is and has always been ready, willing, and able to do so. From the very beginning of her appointment in September 2019, Ms. Montgomery and the medical team that she assembled have had one primary goal—to assist and encourage Britney in her path to no longer needing a conservatorship of the person.”

In her court testimony, Britney testified about her physical and mental health treatment, alleging that she was put on psychiatric medication that she “never wanted to be on to begin with.” The singer, a mother of two sons and who is dating Sam Asghari, also told the court she wants to marry again and have a baby but is unable to because she claims “so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor” to take out a birth control IUD that was put inside her body.

In his statement, Jamie reiterated he is not involved in decisions regarding his daughter’s personal or medical affairs, adding, “Unlike Ms. Montgomery and Mr. Ingham, Mr. Spears does not speak or meet with Ms. Spears’ medical team, and he is not permitted to nor does he have the opportunity to provide any input into his daughter’s current medical treatment, diagnosis, or therapy. Nor does Mr. Spears participate in or discuss Ms. Spears’ personal affairs with her, such as issues related to her self-care, marriage, and reproductive desires. These are issues under the purview of Ms. Montgomery as Ms. Spears’ conservator of the person, and issues that Ms. Spears presumably discusses with her court-appointed attorney, Mr. Ingham.”

Jodi’s lawyer said in their statement, “As to Britney’s right to marry, that is unaffected by the conservatorship under Probate Code §1900. As to family planning, that is also unaffected by the conservatorship. If Britney needs any assistance with either, Ms. Montgomery has and will be there to provide any assistance needed to Britney. Britney’s choice to marry and to start a family have never been impacted by the conservatorship while Ms. Montgomery has been conservator of the person.”

Jamie noted in his filing that in past years when he was in charge of his daughter’s personal affairs, he “never prevented” her from getting married. While she did not end up walking down the aisle again, Britney was engaged to her former agent Jason Trawick for just over a year until they split in 2013. During their relationship, he briefly served as her co-conservator.

In his March 2021 filing requesting that Jodi be made Britney’s conservator of her personal and medical affairs, Britney’s lawyer cited a 2014 order that determined the pop star had an “incapacity to consent to any form of medical treatment,” CNN reported. In his recent filing, Jamie claimed the attorney “incorrectly” stated that Britney’s alleged incapacity to consent to treatment “was determined by order filed in this matter.” The singer’s father’s petition read, “But there was no such finding and there is no such order.”

Jamie also said in his petition that based on his daughter’s recent court testimony, “it is unclear if she is even aware of and agrees with” the statements made in her lawyer’s request to appoint Jodi, “including specifically that she lacks capacity of give informed consent for her own medical treatment.” Jamie added, “This is something that should also be further investigated by the Court.”

Jodi’s attorney said in Wednesday’s statement, “Since being appointed in September 2019, Ms. Montgomery has tirelessly acted in Britney’s best interests with the approval of her doctors and the oversight of the Court.”

The co-conservator’s lawyer also said, “While it is Ms. Montgomery’s professional duty to be Britney’s protector and advocate, honoring her wishes and seeing to her best interests while Britney is under conservatorship, it is her sincere personal wish that Britney continues to make meaningful progress in her well-being so that her conservatorship of the person can be terminated. Ms. Montgomery looks forward to presenting a comprehensive Care Plan to the Court setting forth a path for termination of the conservatorship for Britney, and Ms. Montgomery looks forward to supporting Britney through that process.”

Fashion Designer Michael Costello Says He Had Suicidal Thoughts After Alleged Chrissy Teigen Bullying

Fashion Designer Michael Costello Says He Had Suicidal Thoughts After Alleged Chrissy Teigen Bullying

  • Project Runway alum Michael Costello accused Chrissy Teigen of bullying him in 2014. He said he is "traumatized" to this day and trying to "heal from the darkest hour of my life."
  • Fashion designer Michael Costello accused Chrissy Teigen of bullying him in 2014, which he says caused him to have thoughts of suicide.

“For the past 7 years, I’ve lived with a deep, unhealed trauma,” he wrote on Instagram. “I wanted to kill myself and I still am traumatized, depressed and have thoughts of suicide.”

Costello, 38, opened up about his pain in a lengthy statement on Instagram on Monday, June 14, the same day that Teigen, 35, wrote an open letter to address a separate bullying claim she encountered in recent weeks. As she said, “Not a day, not a single moment has passed where I haven’t felt the crushing weight of regret for the things I’ve said in the past.”

Costello explained in his post that, in 2014, he received a public comment from Teigen on Instagram, accusing him of “being a racist,” as he put it.

“She apparently formed her own opinion of me based on a photoshopped comment floating around the internet,” he alleged. “When I reached out to Chrissy Teigen to communicate that I was the victim of a vindictive cyber slander, and that everything she thought I was is not who I am, she told me that my career was over and that all my doors will be shut from there on.”

(For context: In 2014, an unverified screenshot allegedly showed Costello using the n-word. At the time, he wrote on Tumblr, “The hurtful screenshot circulating is fake and does not represent my views on society, nor do I condone the use of such a terrible term.”)

In his latest post, the Fashion News Live star attached two screenshots of DMs allegedly between himself and Teigen. In the message, which E! News has not independently verified the authenticity of, he asked Teigen if he could call her. Her response: “No! I do not have anything to say to you. You will get what’s coming to you.”

After he told her, “Chrissy, I’ve never called anyone the n word. Those fake images were photoshopped from a former disgruntled employee,” she allegedly replied, “Good luck with that lmao hope that story keeps your already dead career going.”

He explained that people are “attacking” him over the claim and “your comment is adding more fuel to the fire.” Teigen allegedly said, “good! racist people like you deserve to suffer and die. You might as well be dead. Your career is over, just watch.”

E! News has reached out to her rep for comment and has not heard back.

When reflecting on the alleged incident seven years later, Costello said, “Wow, did she live up to her words. Throughout the next few years, I would book jobs only to be pulled off last minute with no explanation.” He claimed that he got texts and calls from their mutual friends and colleagues about how Teigen allegedly threatened people and brands “if they were in any shape or form associated with me.”

Costello claimed he has “pleaded” with the Cravings author “to see the whole story before believing a false narrative a former disgruntled employee cast upon me” but said she wouldn’t listen.

“So many nights I stayed awake, wanting to kill myself. I didn’t see the point of living,” Costello recalled to his 1.3 million followers. “There was no way I can ever escape from being the target of the powerful elites in Hollywood, who actually do have powers to close doors with a single text.”

In fact, he said he didn’t share his purported experience with anyone because “I was living in fear.” The Project Runway alum explained, “In fear of losing some of my most profitable brand relationships; in fear of losing friends and allies; and in fear of being blocklisted [sic] even more by the power elites who run the industry.”

Furthermore, he said he has “suffered tremendously the past few years” and is now trying to “heal from the darkest hour of my life.”

Costello revealed that he wrote personal letters to my family and closest friends last week, “because I thought that taking my own life would be the best way out,” adding, “No matter what I did, I just could not escape the false narrative.”

    Instagram

“I told my family how much I love them, how much I care for them, and just how sorry I was for my decision,” he went on. “Since then, everyone in my family has had me on a close watch against my will.”

He added that he wishes no harm on anyone and does not want sympathy from the former model.

“I just want people to realize that I, too, am human and this was the most inhuman treatment to ever be endured by someone who has seen their decades of hard work, years of building a brand, crumble from one comment,” Costello wrote. “These bullies could’ve reached out to me anytime, but they refused. Instead, they would much rather see me suffer and laugh at my demise.”

The designer’s accusation comes after Teigen faced backlash for resurfaced tweets from 2011 about model Courtney Stodden, who was 16 years old at the time. In one message, Teigen said her “fantasy” was Stodden taking a “dirt nap.”

“Not a lot of people are lucky enough to be held accountable for all their past bulls–t in front of the entire world. I’m mortified and sad at who I used to be. I was an insecure, attention seeking troll,” the Lip Sync Battle co-host wrote in May 2021.

“I am ashamed and completely embarrassed at my behavior but that is nothing compared to how I made Courtney feel,” Teigen said. “I have worked so hard to give you guys joy and be beloved and the feeling of letting you down is nearly unbearable, truly.”

A month later, the cookbook scribe (who exited Mindy Kaling‘s Netflix show in the midst of the controversy) returned to social media with another apology

“There is simply no excuse for my past horrible tweets,” she wrote on Medium on June 14. “My targets didn’t deserve them. No one does. Many of them needed empathy, kindness, understanding and support, not my meanness masquerading as a kind of casual, edgy humor. I was a troll, full stop. And I am so sorry.”

Her letter was published about five hours before Costello came forward. She did not name either him nor Stodden in her post.

Sheryl Crow Recalls Alleged Sexual Harassment From Michael Jackson's Late Manager Frank DiLeo

Sheryl Crow Recalls Alleged Sexual Harassment From Michael Jackson's Late Manager Frank DiLeo

  • In a new interview with The Independent, Sheryl Crow revisited the alleged sexual harassment she faced from "The Na-Na Song" subject, Frank DiLeo, Michael Jackson's late manager.
  • In a new interview, Sheryl Crow detailed the alleged sexual harassment she faced early in her career at the hands of a powerful music manager, and how it was a “crash course” in the music industry.

The “All I Wanna Do” singer, who is gearing up to live stream her show The Songs & The Stories from the church she built in her backyard on June 18, spoke to The Independent about Frank DiLeo, the late manager of Michael Jackson. DiLeo—who managed the controversial artist in the ’80s and returned to working alongside him just prior to Jackson’s death in 2009—died in 2011.

Crow toured with Jackson in 1987, when she was just 25, and told The Independent that, at the time, DiLeo repeatedly made unwanted advances towards her, as well as threatened to ruin her career if she didn’t oblige.

“It was incredible in every way, shape, and form for a young person from a really small town to see the world and to work with arguably the greatest pop star,” she said of touring with the “Billie Jean” singer, whose sexual assault allegations were detailed in the 2019 HBO documentary series Leaving Neverland. “But I also got a crash course in the music industry.”

Crow said she shut down DiLeo’s advances, but when a depressed Crow returned home to Los Angeles, was informed by a lawyer that she should have given in to his advances in order to further her music career.

“It was disillusioning,” the Grammy winner, 59, recalled. “I think when your dream bubble is burst you either go: ‘Okay, well, I’m going to forget that dream,’ or you do what I did, which was wallow in it for about a year, and then you pull your bootstraps up and you get back to work.”

Crow previously channeled her anger towards DiLeo in her 1993 track “The Na-Na Song,” which featured the lyrics, “Frank DiLeo’s dong / Maybe if I’d him I’d have had a hit song.”

She’s eager to confront the harassment she faced head on in her music, with her new live streamed show. Crow told the newspaper, “To be able to play that stuff about the long bout of sexual harassment I endured during the Michael Jackson tour and to talk about it in the midst of the MeToo movement, it feels like we’ve come a long way, but it doesn’t feel like we’re quite there yet.”

Crow’s rep had no immediate comment when reached by E! News and no contact was listed for DiLeo’s estate.

Russian tennis player Yana Sizikova has been arrested at the French Open as part of an investigation into match-fixing at last year’s annual event, authorities say.

The 26-year-old doubles specialist was detained on Thursday, June 3, in Paris. A French Tennis Federation source confirmed her arrest to E! News but declined to provide more details, citing an ongoing judicial investigation. Sizikova, who is ranked 101st in doubles, has not commented, maintains her innocence.

“Yana Sizikova is shaken and denies accusations of crimes she has never committed,” her lawyer, Frederic Belot, was quoted as saying by the Russian news agency TASS, according to Reuters. “The accusations hurt her reputation.”

Sizikova was taken into custody as she came out of a post-match massage session, according to French newspaper Le Parisien, which first reported the arrest. The French prosecutor’s office confirmed to The Associated Press on Friday, June 4, that a “women’s international player” was arrested on Thursday on charges of “sports bribery and organized fraud for acts likely to have been committed in September 2020.” Prosecutors did not identify her by name.

Two sources with direct knowledge of the matter confirmed to Reuters that Sizikova was arrested over match-fixing allegations related to last year’s tournament. Last fall, the Paris prosecutor’s office began an investigation into alleged match-fixing in a 2020 French Open women’s doubles first-round match that Sizikova and partner Madison Brengle from the United States lost to Romanian pair Andreea Mitu and Patricia Mari, Reuters reported. No one except Sizikova has been arrested.

Suspicions arose because of abnormally high betting activity on the game registered in countries outside of France, which was reported to law enforcement, a source close to the case told Agence France-Presse at the time. Investigators concentrated on part of the game that featured two unusual double-faults by Sizikova, the news wire reported.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency, which investigates match-fixing in the sport, declined to comment on the details of the criminal case but told the AP “there has been ongoing liaison between the ITIA and law enforcement in France.”

Shamil Tarpischev, president of the Russian Tennis Federation, told the RIA news agency that he had been informed of Sizikova’s detention, while TASS news agency also reported that the Russian embassy in Paris had been informed of the situation, Reuters said. Russian officials have not commented on her case.
