Chrissy Teigen and John Legend Speak Out Against Michael Costello After "Attack" on Her Character

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend Speak Out Against Michael Costello After "Attack" on Her Character

  • John Legend and Chrissy Teigen speak out against Michael Costello, saying he "fabricated" screenshots to "demean her name and reputation."
  • Watch: Chrissy Teigen May Need “A Court of Law” in Michael Costello Drama

John Legend is coming to the defense of wife Chrissy Teigen.

In an earlier report, one of Chrissy’s team members said that the screenshots Michael Costello recently shared—which accuse the model of cyberbullying in 2014—were inauthentic. In response, the “All of Me” singer is speaking out in support of his wife.

“Chrissy apologized for her public tweets, but after her apology, Mr. Costello fabricated a DM exchange between them,” he tweeted. “This exchange was made up, completely fake, never happened.”

“Honestly, I don’t know why anyone would fake DMs to insert themselves in this narrative but that’s what happened,” he continued. “I encourage everyone who breathlessly spread this lie to keep the same energy when they correct the record.”

Shortly after John spoke out, Chrissy released a new statement written on her behalf, which she captioned, “No idea what the f–k michael costello is doing.”

“Michael, you are now causing actual pain to people who are trying to better themselves. Enough. Or this WILL go further. Not here, but an actual court of law. And every dime we win will go to an anti bullying charity focused on turning this s–t show into a positive,” Chrissy continued, adding that she has “some places I’ve been attending if you’d like the connects.”

In the statement written on her behalf, it said, “Chrissy is completely surprised and disappointed by Michael Costello’s recent attack, which include fictional ‘screenshots’ from 2014 of supposed private messages that Chrissy did not send,” before adding Chrissy “has never conspired with anyone to harm his career.”

Chrissy’s team additionally said she and Michael had a “cordial” relationship in recent years, citing Michael’s past Instagram comments on her posts.

The statement then outlined different aspects of Michael’s screenshots, which allegedly prove the images were doctored, as “recent media investigations” concluded.

“Chrissy has acknowledged her past behavior and the pain she has caused, but she will not stand for anyone spreading false accusations to further demean her name and reputation,” her team continued. “Chrissy will continue to do the work she needs to do to be the best person she can be. She hopes Michael Costello can do the same.”

The statement concluded, “Chrissy has every right to correct the record and defend her name. She is not interested in making Mr. Costello the target of harassment or abuse from anyone claiming to support her. She hopes this can be a time of honest reflection and healing.”

The latest comments from Chrissy and John comes days after the musician told a photographer that Chrissy was doing “great” amongst the controversy she has been facing surrounding resurfaced posts, which accused the star of cyberbullying.

In an article published by Business Insider on June 17, Teigen’s team member said that the Instagram direct messages shared by the designer on June 14 are reportedly “fake” and alleged inconsistencies were listed to support the claim. Costello’s rep has since denied this in a statement to E! News.

In Costello’s original statement, the designer explained that, in 2014, he reportedly received a public comment from Teigen on Instagram, accusing him of “being a racist.”

“She apparently formed her own opinion of me based on a photoshopped comment floating around the internet,” he alleged. “When I reached out to Chrissy Teigen to communicate that I was the victim of a vindictive cyber slander, and that everything she thought I was is not who I am, she told me that my career was over and that all my doors will be shut from there on.”

According to Business Insider, examples of the alleged inconsistencies within the direct messages include a missing verified checkmark next to Teigen’s name, which would suggest the screenshots were taken in 2014, before Instagram’s verification program had launched. However, the same screengrab reportedly features purple and blue messages, which is a recent design added by the social media platform last year.

In a statement to E! News, Costello’s rep denied the allegations, stating, “The fact that Chrissy Teigen’s team is desperately trying to prove the DM’s are fake and attempts to discredit Michael Costello, a victim of trauma and bullying by Chrissy Teigen both online and offline, confirms that she remains the same bully, despite her public apology.”

And in yet another statement shared to his now-private Instagram, Michael said he will not be commenting on the drama any further.

Fashion Designer Michael Costello Says He Had Suicidal Thoughts After Alleged Chrissy Teigen Bullying

Fashion Designer Michael Costello Says He Had Suicidal Thoughts After Alleged Chrissy Teigen Bullying

  • Project Runway alum Michael Costello accused Chrissy Teigen of bullying him in 2014. He said he is "traumatized" to this day and trying to "heal from the darkest hour of my life."
  • Fashion designer Michael Costello accused Chrissy Teigen of bullying him in 2014, which he says caused him to have thoughts of suicide.

“For the past 7 years, I’ve lived with a deep, unhealed trauma,” he wrote on Instagram. “I wanted to kill myself and I still am traumatized, depressed and have thoughts of suicide.”

Costello, 38, opened up about his pain in a lengthy statement on Instagram on Monday, June 14, the same day that Teigen, 35, wrote an open letter to address a separate bullying claim she encountered in recent weeks. As she said, “Not a day, not a single moment has passed where I haven’t felt the crushing weight of regret for the things I’ve said in the past.”

Costello explained in his post that, in 2014, he received a public comment from Teigen on Instagram, accusing him of “being a racist,” as he put it.

(For context: In 2014, an unverified screenshot allegedly showed Costello using the n-word. At the time, he wrote on Tumblr, “The hurtful screenshot circulating is fake and does not represent my views on society, nor do I condone the use of such a terrible term.”)

In his latest post, the Fashion News Live star attached two screenshots of DMs allegedly between himself and Teigen. In the message, which E! News has not independently verified the authenticity of, he asked Teigen if he could call her. Her response: “No! I do not have anything to say to you. You will get what’s coming to you.”

After he told her, “Chrissy, I’ve never called anyone the n word. Those fake images were photoshopped from a former disgruntled employee,” she allegedly replied, “Good luck with that lmao hope that story keeps your already dead career going.”

He explained that people are “attacking” him over the claim and “your comment is adding more fuel to the fire.” Teigen allegedly said, “good! racist people like you deserve to suffer and die. You might as well be dead. Your career is over, just watch.”

E! News has reached out to her rep for comment and has not heard back.

When reflecting on the alleged incident seven years later, Costello said, “Wow, did she live up to her words. Throughout the next few years, I would book jobs only to be pulled off last minute with no explanation.” He claimed that he got texts and calls from their mutual friends and colleagues about how Teigen allegedly threatened people and brands “if they were in any shape or form associated with me.”

Costello claimed he has “pleaded” with the Cravings author “to see the whole story before believing a false narrative a former disgruntled employee cast upon me” but said she wouldn’t listen.

“So many nights I stayed awake, wanting to kill myself. I didn’t see the point of living,” Costello recalled to his 1.3 million followers. “There was no way I can ever escape from being the target of the powerful elites in Hollywood, who actually do have powers to close doors with a single text.”

In fact, he said he didn’t share his purported experience with anyone because “I was living in fear.” The Project Runway alum explained, “In fear of losing some of my most profitable brand relationships; in fear of losing friends and allies; and in fear of being blocklisted [sic] even more by the power elites who run the industry.”

Furthermore, he said he has “suffered tremendously the past few years” and is now trying to “heal from the darkest hour of my life.”

Costello revealed that he wrote personal letters to my family and closest friends last week, “because I thought that taking my own life would be the best way out,” adding, “No matter what I did, I just could not escape the false narrative.”

“I told my family how much I love them, how much I care for them, and just how sorry I was for my decision,” he went on. “Since then, everyone in my family has had me on a close watch against my will.”

He added that he wishes no harm on anyone and does not want sympathy from the former model.

“I just want people to realize that I, too, am human and this was the most inhuman treatment to ever be endured by someone who has seen their decades of hard work, years of building a brand, crumble from one comment,” Costello wrote. “These bullies could’ve reached out to me anytime, but they refused. Instead, they would much rather see me suffer and laugh at my demise.”

The designer’s accusation comes after Teigen faced backlash for resurfaced tweets from 2011 about model Courtney Stodden, who was 16 years old at the time. In one message, Teigen said her “fantasy” was Stodden taking a “dirt nap.”

“Not a lot of people are lucky enough to be held accountable for all their past bulls–t in front of the entire world. I’m mortified and sad at who I used to be. I was an insecure, attention seeking troll,” the Lip Sync Battle co-host wrote in May 2021.

“I am ashamed and completely embarrassed at my behavior but that is nothing compared to how I made Courtney feel,” Teigen said. “I have worked so hard to give you guys joy and be beloved and the feeling of letting you down is nearly unbearable, truly.”

A month later, the cookbook scribe (who exited Mindy Kaling‘s Netflix show in the midst of the controversy) returned to social media with another apology

“There is simply no excuse for my past horrible tweets,” she wrote on Medium on June 14. “My targets didn’t deserve them. No one does. Many of them needed empathy, kindness, understanding and support, not my meanness masquerading as a kind of casual, edgy humor. I was a troll, full stop. And I am so sorry.”

Her letter was published about five hours before Costello came forward. She did not name either him nor Stodden in her post.

Chrissy Teigen Exits Mindy Kaling's Netflix Show After Controversy

Chrissy Teigen Exits Mindy Kaling's Netflix Show After Controversy

  • Chrissy Teigen has canceled her upcoming part on Mindy Kalin's Netflix series Never Have I Ever, weeks after stirring controversy for bullying Courtney Stodden online several years ago.
  • Chrissy Teigen has canceled an upcoming part on Mindy Kaling‘s Netflix series Never Have I Ever, three weeks after apologizing amid a backlash over her past bullying of then-teenage Courtney Stodden.

A spokesperson for the show told E! News that Teigen, 35, decided to step away from a guest voiceover role in one episode of the second season, which premieres in July. The part is expected to be recast. The model has not commented on her departure. Her participation in Never Have I Ever, a coming-of-age dramedy inspired by Kaling’s childhood, was rumored but never officially announced.

The news comes three weeks after she publicly apologized for bullying Stodden, 26, just after the influencer and model rose to fame following their controversial 2011 marriage at age 16 to then 50-year-old LOST star Doug Hutchinson. Teigen made her comments two days after The Daily Beast posted an interview with Stodden, who has since divorced the actor and recently got engaged to their current boyfriend, in which they detailed some of the cookbook author’s past cruel messages.

“Not a lot of people are lucky enough to be held accountable for all their past bulls–t in front of the entire world,” she tweeted on May 12. “I’m mortified and sad at who I used to be. I was an insecure, attention seeking troll. I am ashamed and completely embarrassed at my behavior but that…is nothing compared to how I made Courtney feel.”

Teigen continued, “I have worked so hard to give you guys joy and be beloved and the feeling of letting you down is nearly unbearable, truly. These were not my only mistakes and surely won’t be my last as hard as I try but god I will try!!”

Teigen also added, “I have tried to connect with Courtney privately but since I publicly fueled all this, I want to also publicly apologize. I’m so sorry, Courtney. I hope you can heal now knowing how deeply sorry I am. And I am so sorry I let you guys down. I will forever work on being better than I was 10 years ago, 1 year ago, 6 months ago.”

Stodden said on Instagram last month that they accepted Teigen’s apology and forgave her, but added that neither the star nor her associates communicated with them privately.

“In fact, she blocked me on Twitter,” Stodden added. “All of me wants to believe this is a sincere apology, but it feels like a public attempt to save her partnerships with Target and other brands who are realizing her ‘wokeness’ is a broken record.”

After Teigen made her apology, it was reported that her Cravings cookware line was no longer available at Target. A rep for the retailer told Fox Business in a statement at the time, “We made the mutual decision in December to no longer carry the cookware line, given our continued focus on brands we develop and that can only be found at Target.” However, Target still sells her cookbooks.

Meanwhile, Teigen has not posted anything on social media since her May apology to Stodden, although she has not formally announced she has quit her platforms, where she has millions of followers. The supermodel had gone on a three-week Twitter hiatus earlier this year.

“This no longer serves me as positively as it serves me negatively, and I think that’s the right time to call something,” Teigen tweeted in March. “I have made my mistakes, throughout years and in front of hundreds of thousands, and been held accountable for them. I’ve learned an incredible amount here. God I have said f—ed up s–t and killed myself over it as much as you killed me. But one thing I haven’t learned is how to block out the negativity.”

She continued, “I’m just a sensitive s–t okay!? I don’t wanna be this way! I just am! But I love you guys and I cherish our time together, I truly do. I also hate you.”
