How Michael Phelps Built His Adorable, Winning Family

How Michael Phelps Built His Adorable, Winning Family

  • While we'll certainly miss seeing Michael Phelps compete at the Tokyo Games, we'll settle for diving into his sweet love story with bride Nicole Phelps.
  • At long last, we are finally gearing up to watch the Parade of Nations, dissecting what we do and don’t like about the American uniforms and predicting who exactly would be the breakout star of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

This time five years ago at 2016 games, we were gifted with us four-time gold medalist Simone Biles and the rest of gymnastic’s final five. Also, swimmers Katie Ledecky and Simone Manuel, superhuman sprinter Usain Bolt and Tonga’s shirtless and well-oiled flag bearer.

But if we had to name just one person the world couldn’t stop talking about, well, we’re kind of partial to Boomer Phelps. The firstborn son of the world’s most decorated Olympian put on a master class in cuteness as he and mom Nicole Phelps watched Dad Michael Phelps compete. And cameras couldn’t stop panning over to his smushy adorableness and oversize noise-canceling headphones. The then-3-month-old—who has an impressive 574,000 followers on Instagram—was suddenly everyone’s favorite celeb, even sitting for an interview on the Today show.

And while Phelps has definitely, absolutely, undoubtedly swam his last Olympics’ heat, calling the chance to collect five gold medals and one silver with his bride and their baby watching from the stands “dream come true after dream come true,” he may still be on hand in Japan.

“We’ve been having some conversations about potentially going over and doing some work,” the water safety and mental health advocate told NBC News in 2019. “I’d like to take my family over, too….I’m excited just to see what it’s going to be like sitting in the stands, watching my friends competing.”

In the five years since he last claimed a podium spot, his brood has expanded to five, the couple of more than a decade collecting sons at a rate just slightly slower than the swimmer once nabbed gold medals. Their latest, Maverick Phelps arrived in September 2019, joining big brothers Boomer, 5, and Beckett Phelps, 3, and “instantly has stolen all of our hearts and keeps me an ecstatic mommy of boys,” Nicole wrote on Instagram. “I can’t wait to walk this journey surrounded by my men.”

Way back in 2007, it was just the one man by her side. The Olympian (already a six-time gold medal winner with a handful of world records to his name) had said “it was love at first sight” when they met on that July day and the newly minted University of Southern California grad was at least smitten enough to deviate from her planned life course.

“I expected to be working in the sports field…my dream job would have been reporting on Formula One,” she noted in a 2016 interview with Cosmopolitan. “That went out the window, obviously, when Michael and I started dating—his career essentially came first.”

That’s not to say the athlete wasn’t supportive of her goals, turning up in Palm Springs in late 2010 to watch the former Miss California, a ninth place finisher for Miss USA, crown her successor. “I’m here for one reason and one reason only,” Michael told E! News at the time. “Nicole.” That he was willing to take time out from his rigorous pre-London Games training schedule meant a lot. “Michael is here supporting me and my family and it feels great,” she said. “It’s been great.”

They just couldn’t make the good times last. Just when things seemed to be going, you know, swimmingly, they’d hit a snag, splitting twice on their way to forever.

“There definitely were times, and I think Michael would say the same thing, where I hated him,” she confessed to Cosmopolitan, their third go-round at romance in 2014 proving to be the charm. “We were at odds at times.” And, yet, she couldn’t shake the feeling that just maybe he was end game: “Even when I loathed him, there were still times when I was like, ‘God, I wish I was with him.'”

But, as many have learned the hard way, your early 20s and a steady, stable romance don’t always mix. “It was definitely bad timing,” she surmised of their false starts. “We both had a lot of growing up to do. We both had a lot of learning about ourselves to do. I don’t think you can be in a good relationship unless you love yourself to the fullest and you want to help the other person become a better person. We definitely needed that time apart to recognize that about ourselves and to appreciate one another.”

Agreed Michael, speaking to Access Hollywood that same year, “We both had to go through some things to get to the point where we are now in our life.”

For the 28-time medalist that meant pushing through a rough patch that saw him arrested for driving under the influence in September 2014 and immediately checking into a six-week treatment program as he battled debilitating depression. “I was in a really dark place…not wanting to be alive anymore,” he would later confess to Sports Illustrated, his experience inspiring him to take on the role of mental health advocate.

“I was so down on myself,” he told Today in 2018. “I didn’t have any self-love and quite honestly, I just didn’t want to be alive. It was a really, really, really crazy time for me and I didn’t want to see anybody, because for me, I saw myself as letting so many people down and me, myself in particular, and that’s hard to carry.” Shutting himself up in a hotel room for three straight days, “I finally realized that I can ask for help and it’s OK to not be OK and for me, that’s what changed my life.”

    Michael Phelps/Instagram

He emerged from treatment a new man (“I’m back to being the little kid who once said anything is possible,” he marveled to Sports Illustrated) with a new mission: get the girl.

“I always said if I had the chance to get her back, she was the one I was going to spend the rest of my life with,” he told Access Hollywood in that 2016 chat. So he worked up the nerve to reach out to the Los Angeles-area native, knowing full well she might decline his call. “I wanted just to tell her how I felt,” he explained. “I didn’t want to live my life without her and not have her know exactly how I felt.”

He was prepared, no matter her response: “Either ready to move on or try it again,” he said. “But I wanted to just express my feelings to her and that was something that changed our life and put us where we are today.”

That place was a February 2015 engagement—Michael confirming the news with a straightforward, “She said yes”—and a head start on the family they wanted to have together.

    Instagram

Learning they were expecting Boomer proved to be a blessing in more ways than one, his May 2016 arrival meaning the entire brood could travel down to Rio for the athlete’s swan song.

A strong Zika presence in Brazil had them consulting with some five doctors, plus Boomer’s pediatrician to ensure it was safe for the little guy, she told Cosmo, but “had we been in the position where we would have been looking to have children after the games, we would have taken a different approach to it.”

And thank God for that, Boomer and his star spangled outfits injecting a dose of awwww into the 16-day event and providing Michael with an extra boost of motivation.

“When I got out of the warm-up pool for the last time to get ready to go up to the blocks, I have the white shoes that I wore pretty much every finals,” Phelps recalled to ABC News of that last swim. “In the left foot, there’s a footprint of him, inside of my shoe, and I put my shoe on and I looked down at it and I started to get emotional because I knew he was in the stands.”

    MARTIN BUREAU/AFP/Getty Images

The whole couldn’t-be-scripted-better experience (naturally Michael and his teammates took the gold in that final event, even setting an Olympic record with their 4 x 100 medley relay time), made it easy for the Michael Phelps Foundation founder to close that chapter of his life and step confidently into the next as a philanthropist, advocate, volunteer Arizona State University swim coach and a husband.

Three 2016 weddings later (the first, a legal formality to make travel to Brazil easier, followed by picturesque seaside vows in Cabo San Lucas that September and a huge New Year’s Eve bash), the Arizona-based pair made good on plans to expand their family. Beckett joined his big brother in February 2018; Maverick followed along 19 months later. And, of course, each has a dedicated Instagram following that simply lives for each of the posts Dad crafts.

“Michael runs it,” Nicole shared with Cosmo back when he was just managing Boomer’s instantly popular account. “I love watching him do it. I send the pictures and Michael does the posting.”

Though little Mav is still growing his audience, in his posts he’s proven to be socially minded, a strong poser and skilled at tugging at the ol’ heartstrings. “We’re the 3 best friends that anyone could have,” read a March 2020 post, a sentiment that would be sweet AF even if you didn’t know the backstory.

Every moment of those complicated, difficult nearly decade-long years of off-and-on romance was worth it to reach the place they’re at now, a hectic but altogether happy blur of pool days, golf outings, bike rides and date nights in. “We love being home and cooking together. We’re homebodies,” Nicole told Cosmo. “We like to play cards together. We’ll go in the backyard and play cornhole.”

We’d imagine even the friendliest of matches can get competitive, between the two proven winners, but safe to say they both feel pretty victorious.

“It’s been a long time. We’ve been through a lot,” Michael admitted to USA Today just after his 2015 proposal. “But I love her to death. We’ve been able to grow as a couple through everything we’ve been through, the positive changes I’ve made in my life.” After everything, he shared, “I’ve said this a hundred times, and I’ll say it again now: I’m so happy with where I am now.”

  • Watch: All the MUST-SEE Moments From “Friends: The Reunion”

Actor James Michael Tyler is opening up about his years-long health battle for the first time.

In an interview with Today‘s Craig Melvin, Tyler—who played Jennifer Aniston‘s coffee shop manager Gunther on Friendsshared that he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in September 2018 after a routine physical.

“I was 56 years old at the time, and they screen for PSA, which is prostate-specific antigen,” he said on Today. “That came back at an extraordinarily high number…So I knew immediately when I went online and I saw the results of my blood test and blood work that there was obviously something quite wrong there. Nearly immediately, my doctor called me and said, ‘Hey, I need you to come in tomorrow because I suspect that you may have quite a serious problem with your prostate.'”

As he soon learned, the cancer had spread to his bones. “For my specific prognosis, it’s of course stage 4,” he told Melvin. “Late stage cancer. So eventually, you know, it’s gonna probably get me.”

“I missed going in for a test, which was not a good thing,” Tyler noted. “So the cancer decided to mutate at the time of the pandemic, and so it’s progressed.” According to Today, Tyler, who is undergoing chemotherapy, can no longer walk.

Tyler now wants to help others, urging men to ask for a PSA test at their next doctor’s appointment. “There are other options available to men if they catch it before me,” Tyler said on Today. “Next time you go in for just a basic exam or your yearly checkup, please ask your doctor for a PSA test. It’s easily detectable.”

All these guys were fantastic and just a joy to work with. It felt very, very special.”

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend Speak Out Against Michael Costello After "Attack" on Her Character

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend Speak Out Against Michael Costello After "Attack" on Her Character

  • John Legend and Chrissy Teigen speak out against Michael Costello, saying he "fabricated" screenshots to "demean her name and reputation."
  • Watch: Chrissy Teigen May Need “A Court of Law” in Michael Costello Drama

John Legend is coming to the defense of wife Chrissy Teigen.

In an earlier report, one of Chrissy’s team members said that the screenshots Michael Costello recently shared—which accuse the model of cyberbullying in 2014—were inauthentic. In response, the “All of Me” singer is speaking out in support of his wife.

“Chrissy apologized for her public tweets, but after her apology, Mr. Costello fabricated a DM exchange between them,” he tweeted. “This exchange was made up, completely fake, never happened.”

“Honestly, I don’t know why anyone would fake DMs to insert themselves in this narrative but that’s what happened,” he continued. “I encourage everyone who breathlessly spread this lie to keep the same energy when they correct the record.”

Shortly after John spoke out, Chrissy released a new statement written on her behalf, which she captioned, “No idea what the f–k michael costello is doing.”

“Michael, you are now causing actual pain to people who are trying to better themselves. Enough. Or this WILL go further. Not here, but an actual court of law. And every dime we win will go to an anti bullying charity focused on turning this s–t show into a positive,” Chrissy continued, adding that she has “some places I’ve been attending if you’d like the connects.”

In the statement written on her behalf, it said, “Chrissy is completely surprised and disappointed by Michael Costello’s recent attack, which include fictional ‘screenshots’ from 2014 of supposed private messages that Chrissy did not send,” before adding Chrissy “has never conspired with anyone to harm his career.”

Chrissy’s team additionally said she and Michael had a “cordial” relationship in recent years, citing Michael’s past Instagram comments on her posts.

The statement then outlined different aspects of Michael’s screenshots, which allegedly prove the images were doctored, as “recent media investigations” concluded.

“Chrissy has acknowledged her past behavior and the pain she has caused, but she will not stand for anyone spreading false accusations to further demean her name and reputation,” her team continued. “Chrissy will continue to do the work she needs to do to be the best person she can be. She hopes Michael Costello can do the same.”

The statement concluded, “Chrissy has every right to correct the record and defend her name. She is not interested in making Mr. Costello the target of harassment or abuse from anyone claiming to support her. She hopes this can be a time of honest reflection and healing.”

The latest comments from Chrissy and John comes days after the musician told a photographer that Chrissy was doing “great” amongst the controversy she has been facing surrounding resurfaced posts, which accused the star of cyberbullying.

In an article published by Business Insider on June 17, Teigen’s team member said that the Instagram direct messages shared by the designer on June 14 are reportedly “fake” and alleged inconsistencies were listed to support the claim. Costello’s rep has since denied this in a statement to E! News.

In Costello’s original statement, the designer explained that, in 2014, he reportedly received a public comment from Teigen on Instagram, accusing him of “being a racist.”

“She apparently formed her own opinion of me based on a photoshopped comment floating around the internet,” he alleged. “When I reached out to Chrissy Teigen to communicate that I was the victim of a vindictive cyber slander, and that everything she thought I was is not who I am, she told me that my career was over and that all my doors will be shut from there on.”

    MediaPunch/Shutterstock

According to Business Insider, examples of the alleged inconsistencies within the direct messages include a missing verified checkmark next to Teigen’s name, which would suggest the screenshots were taken in 2014, before Instagram’s verification program had launched. However, the same screengrab reportedly features purple and blue messages, which is a recent design added by the social media platform last year.

In a statement to E! News, Costello’s rep denied the allegations, stating, “The fact that Chrissy Teigen’s team is desperately trying to prove the DM’s are fake and attempts to discredit Michael Costello, a victim of trauma and bullying by Chrissy Teigen both online and offline, confirms that she remains the same bully, despite her public apology.”

And in yet another statement shared to his now-private Instagram, Michael said he will not be commenting on the drama any further.

Fashion Designer Michael Costello Says He Had Suicidal Thoughts After Alleged Chrissy Teigen Bullying

Fashion Designer Michael Costello Says He Had Suicidal Thoughts After Alleged Chrissy Teigen Bullying

  • Project Runway alum Michael Costello accused Chrissy Teigen of bullying him in 2014. He said he is "traumatized" to this day and trying to "heal from the darkest hour of my life."
  • Fashion designer Michael Costello accused Chrissy Teigen of bullying him in 2014, which he says caused him to have thoughts of suicide.

“For the past 7 years, I’ve lived with a deep, unhealed trauma,” he wrote on Instagram. “I wanted to kill myself and I still am traumatized, depressed and have thoughts of suicide.”

Costello, 38, opened up about his pain in a lengthy statement on Instagram on Monday, June 14, the same day that Teigen, 35, wrote an open letter to address a separate bullying claim she encountered in recent weeks. As she said, “Not a day, not a single moment has passed where I haven’t felt the crushing weight of regret for the things I’ve said in the past.”

Costello explained in his post that, in 2014, he received a public comment from Teigen on Instagram, accusing him of “being a racist,” as he put it.

(For context: In 2014, an unverified screenshot allegedly showed Costello using the n-word. At the time, he wrote on Tumblr, “The hurtful screenshot circulating is fake and does not represent my views on society, nor do I condone the use of such a terrible term.”)

In his latest post, the Fashion News Live star attached two screenshots of DMs allegedly between himself and Teigen. In the message, which E! News has not independently verified the authenticity of, he asked Teigen if he could call her. Her response: “No! I do not have anything to say to you. You will get what’s coming to you.”

After he told her, “Chrissy, I’ve never called anyone the n word. Those fake images were photoshopped from a former disgruntled employee,” she allegedly replied, “Good luck with that lmao hope that story keeps your already dead career going.”

He explained that people are “attacking” him over the claim and “your comment is adding more fuel to the fire.” Teigen allegedly said, “good! racist people like you deserve to suffer and die. You might as well be dead. Your career is over, just watch.”

E! News has reached out to her rep for comment and has not heard back.

When reflecting on the alleged incident seven years later, Costello said, “Wow, did she live up to her words. Throughout the next few years, I would book jobs only to be pulled off last minute with no explanation.” He claimed that he got texts and calls from their mutual friends and colleagues about how Teigen allegedly threatened people and brands “if they were in any shape or form associated with me.”

    Michael CostelloFrazer Harrison/Getty Images

Costello claimed he has “pleaded” with the Cravings author “to see the whole story before believing a false narrative a former disgruntled employee cast upon me” but said she wouldn’t listen.

“So many nights I stayed awake, wanting to kill myself. I didn’t see the point of living,” Costello recalled to his 1.3 million followers. “There was no way I can ever escape from being the target of the powerful elites in Hollywood, who actually do have powers to close doors with a single text.”

In fact, he said he didn’t share his purported experience with anyone because “I was living in fear.” The Project Runway alum explained, “In fear of losing some of my most profitable brand relationships; in fear of losing friends and allies; and in fear of being blocklisted [sic] even more by the power elites who run the industry.”

Furthermore, he said he has “suffered tremendously the past few years” and is now trying to “heal from the darkest hour of my life.”

Costello revealed that he wrote personal letters to my family and closest friends last week, “because I thought that taking my own life would be the best way out,” adding, “No matter what I did, I just could not escape the false narrative.”

    Instagram

“I told my family how much I love them, how much I care for them, and just how sorry I was for my decision,” he went on. “Since then, everyone in my family has had me on a close watch against my will.”

He added that he wishes no harm on anyone and does not want sympathy from the former model.

“I just want people to realize that I, too, am human and this was the most inhuman treatment to ever be endured by someone who has seen their decades of hard work, years of building a brand, crumble from one comment,” Costello wrote. “These bullies could’ve reached out to me anytime, but they refused. Instead, they would much rather see me suffer and laugh at my demise.”

The designer’s accusation comes after Teigen faced backlash for resurfaced tweets from 2011 about model Courtney Stodden, who was 16 years old at the time. In one message, Teigen said her “fantasy” was Stodden taking a “dirt nap.”

“Not a lot of people are lucky enough to be held accountable for all their past bulls–t in front of the entire world. I’m mortified and sad at who I used to be. I was an insecure, attention seeking troll,” the Lip Sync Battle co-host wrote in May 2021.

“I am ashamed and completely embarrassed at my behavior but that is nothing compared to how I made Courtney feel,” Teigen said. “I have worked so hard to give you guys joy and be beloved and the feeling of letting you down is nearly unbearable, truly.”

A month later, the cookbook scribe (who exited Mindy Kaling‘s Netflix show in the midst of the controversy) returned to social media with another apology

“There is simply no excuse for my past horrible tweets,” she wrote on Medium on June 14. “My targets didn’t deserve them. No one does. Many of them needed empathy, kindness, understanding and support, not my meanness masquerading as a kind of casual, edgy humor. I was a troll, full stop. And I am so sorry.”

Her letter was published about five hours before Costello came forward. She did not name either him nor Stodden in her post.
