Prince Harry and Prince William Reunite to Honor Princess Diana

  • For the first time since Prince Philip's funeral in April, Prince Harry and Prince William came together to pay tribute to another family member close to their hearts: their late mom Princess Diana.

Prince Harry and Prince William showed no signs of a family rift as they put on a united front in honor of their late mom.

On Thursday, July 1, what would have been Princess Diana‘s 60th birthday, the brothers reunited at Kensington Palace to unveil a statue of the Princess of Wales. “Today…we remember her love, strength and character–qualities that made her a force for good around the world, changing countless lives for the better,” Harry and William said. “Every day, we wish she were still with us, and our hope is that this statue will be seen forever as a symbol of her life and her legacy.”

“Thank you to Ian Rank-Broadley, Pip Morrison and their teams for their outstanding work,” they continued, “to the friends and donors who helped make this happen, and to all those around the world who keep our mother’s memory alive.”

Harry and William, who have not been seen together since their grandfather Prince Philip‘s funeral in April, first announced the dedication in 2020. “The statue was commissioned to mark the twentieth anniversary of her death and recognize her positive impact in the UK and around the world,” read Harry and William’s joint statement, referencing their mom’s 1997 passing. “The Princes hope that the statue will help all those who visit Kensington Palace to reflect on their mother’s life and her legacy.”

In late June, weeks after honoring his mom with the name of his and Meghan Markle‘s baby girl Lilibet “Lili” Diana, the Duke of Sussex flew solo to the U.K. from his home in Southern California for the unveiling.

On June 28, just days before publicly reuniting with his older brother, Harry made a surprise virtual appearance at the Diana Awards. “I want to thank you for being part of this important moment and for being such a valuable asset to your community,” Harry said in a video message to young leaders being honored at the ceremony. “I’m truly honored to be celebrating your work, your commitment to change making and the vital role you’ve taken on representing a new generation of humanitarianism.”

The 36-year-old royal went on to address the upcoming tribute to his mother. “Later this week, my brother and I are recognizing what would have been our mum’s 60th birthday, and she would be so proud of you all for living an authentic life with purpose and with compassion for others,” he continued. “Our mum believed that young people have the power to change the world. She believed in your strength because she saw it day in and day out and in the faces of young people exactly like you, she witnessed a boundless enthusiasm and passion and I too see those same values shine through.”

Harry, who announced his royal exit alongside Meghan in January 2020, spoke openly about Diana in the couple’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, which aired this past March. As for how Diana would react to his departure from royal life, Harry said, “I think she would feel very angry with how this has panned out, and very sad. But ultimately, all she’d ever want is for us to be happy.”

In fact, as Harry mentioned in the tell-all, the endowment he received from his mother helped him start this new chapter. “I think she saw it coming. And I certainly felt her presence throughout this whole process,” he shared, before referencing Diana and Prince Charles‘ divorce. “I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side. Because I can’t begin to imagine what it must have been like for her going through this process by herself all those years ago, because it’s been unbelievably tough for the two of us, but at least we had each other.”

    Walking Side by Side

While Prince Harry told Oprah Winfrey he and Prince William were on “different paths,” he also noted he “loves him to bits”—and their coming together is a true reminder of that.

    Getting Ready for the Reveal

The statue of Princess Diana was commissioned by the Duke of Cambridge and the Duke of Sussex in 2017, 20 years after their mother’s death in 1997.

    Unveiling the Statue

Not only was the statue placed in the Sunken Garden, Diana’s favorite Kensington Palace spot, but a press release revealed it’s also surrounded by more than 4,000 individual flowers—including roses, tulips, lavender plants, dahlias, sweet peas and forget-me-nots, Diana’s favorite.

“This has been a very special project to work on,” Pip Morrison, who designed the new layout, said in a statement, later adding, “We have worked carefully to ensure that the new layout and planting scheme compliments the statue, providing a calming place for people who visit Kensington Palace to remember The Princess.”

    Honoring Diana

The palace’s press release noted the statue is meant “to reflect the warmth, elegance and energy of Diana, Princess of Wales, in addition to her work and the impact she had on so many people. The figure of Diana, Princess of Wales is surrounded by three children who represent the universality and generational impact of The Princess’ work. The portrait and style of dress was based on the final period of her life as she gained confidence in her role as an ambassador for humanitarian causes and aims to convey her character and compassion.”

    Taking in the Tribute

Underneath the statue is a pedestal that’s engraved with the Princess of Wales’ name and the date of the unveiling. There’s also a paving stone in the front, the press release continued, that features an extract from the poem The Measure of A Man, which was included in the program for a memorial service on the 10th anniversary of Diana’s death. It reads:

“These are the units to measure the worth
Of this woman as a woman regardless of birth.
    Not what was her station?
    But had she a heart?
How did she play her God-given part?”

    Talking Together

Literally larger than life: The press release noted the statue, cast by Castle Fine Arts Foundry “in a traditional ‘lost-wax’ process with a patina of a bluish green over black,” is about one-and-a-quarter the size of the beloved princess.

    Embracing Family

Harry and William weren’t the only ones at the unveiling. Diana’s sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes, also attended and received hugs from the dukes.

    Greeting Their Uncle

Diana’s brother, The Earl Spencer, also made the trip, greeting Harry and William with a warm handshake.

    Speaking With the Statue Committee

Among the other attendees: Sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley, landscape designer Pip Morrison, chair of historic royal palaces Rupert Gavin, and Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, former private secretary to Harry, William and Kate Middleton. Gavin and Lowther-Pinkerton sat in on the statue committee and chatted with the Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Sussex at the July 1 event.

While the public remembers Princess Diana as the people’s princess, Prince William and Prince Harry will always think of her as “the best mum in the world.”

“We felt incredibly loved, her and I,” the Duke of Cambridge said in the 2017 documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, “and I’m very grateful that that love still feels there.”

It’s been almost 24 years since the Princess of Wales died. Her life ended at the age of 36 following a Paris car crash in 1997, and mourners would never forget watching William and Harry, who were just 15 and 12 at the time, walk behind their mother’s coffin at her funeral.

Throughout their lives, the brothers have continued to honor Diana’s legacy, including with their work, tributes and memories they share with their children. And now, on July 1, they’re marking what would have been their mother’s 60th birthday.

In honor of the occasion, here’s a look back at seven ways Harry and William have paid tribute to Diana over the years.

By Paying Tribute With a Statue Honoring Diana

On July 1, what would be Diana’s 60th birthday, William and Harry will gather in Kensington Palace’s Sunken Garden to unveil a statue of the late Princess of Wales.

“The statue was commissioned to mark the twentieth anniversary of her death and recognize her positive impact in the U.K. and around the world,” an August statement from the dukes read. “The Princes hope that the statue will help all those who visit Kensington Palace to reflect on their mother’s life and her legacy.”

In 2017, the Sunken Garden was temporarily renamed The White Garden and featured flowers in white and soft pastel colors as a nod to Diana’s wardrobe, which was on display at the palace at the time. William and Harry also visited the garden ahead of the 20th anniversary of her death.

By Sharing Their Personal Memories About Diana

In addition, Harry and William marked the anniversary by participating in the HBO documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy. They recalled memories from their childhood and spoke about how she shaped who they are today.

“I give thanks that I was lucky enough to be her son and that I got to know her for the 15 years that I did,” William said. “She set us up really well. She gave us the right tools and had prepared us well for life in the best way she could not obviously knowing what was going to happen.”

Added Harry, “She was our mum. She still is our mum. And you know, of course as a son, I would say that she’s the best mum in the world.”

    By Continuing Her Work

Harry and William have also carried on their mother’s legacy by supporting organizations that were close to her heart. William, for instance, is patron of The Passage, which offers support and resources for people without a home. He first learned about its services during a 1993 visit with Diana and has continued to come by many times over the years. The Duke of Cambridge is also patron of Child Bereavement U.K., which offers support to children and families when a child grieves or dies. Diana attended and supported the non-profit’s launch in 1994.

Similarly, Harry is continuing Diana’s work of educating the public about HIV/AIDS and shattering stigmas. He’s encouraged people to get tested and founded Sentebale—an organization he launched with Prince Seeiso to support young people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS in Southern Africa. Harry has also championed his mother’s landmine clearance work. Diana walked through an active minefield in Angola in 1997 and is often credited with raising awareness for an international treaty against landmines, which was signed shortly after her death. Harry retraced her steps in 2019 and has spoken about the “vital mission of de-mining Angola.”

By Remembering Her at Their Weddings

When William proposed to Kate Middleton in 2010, he popped the question with the sapphire and diamond engagement ring that once belonged to his mother. The couple tied the knot in 2011 and made sure to recognize the Princess of Wales on their big day—such as by playing the hymn “Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer,” which was sung at Diana’s funeral.

Harry also picked significant stones for Meghan Markle‘s engagement ring when he proposed in 2017—choosing a center diamond from Botswana, which holds a special place in their hearts, and framing it between two diamonds from Diana’s personal collection. And on their wedding day in 2018, the Duchess of Sussex walked down the aisle with a bouquet consisting of handpicked blooms from Harry and Forget-Me-Nots, Diana’s favorite flower.

By Naming Their Children After Her

When William and Kate’s daughter was born in 2015, they named her Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, with the middle monikers being nods to Queen Elizabeth II and Diana. Harry and Meghan also honored the Queen and Princess of Wales by naming their daughter Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor after she was born in June.

By Telling Their Kids About “Granny” Diana

Harry and William have made sure their little ones know all about Diana. In March, for instance, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge revealed that, every year on Mother’s Day, their children—Prince George, 7, Princess Charlotte, 6, and Prince Louis, 3—make cards remembering “Granny” Diana for William. And in Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, William said he’s “constantly” talking about her with the kids.

“I do regularly, putting George and Charlotte to bed, talk about her and just trying to remind them that there are two grandmothers. There were two grandmothers in their lives,” he said in the 2017 doc. “And so, it’s important that they know how she was and she existed.”

And in his Apple TV+ docuseries with Oprah Winfrey, titled The Me You Can’t See, Harry recalled how one of the first words said by his 2-year-old son Archie Harrison was “grandma.”

“I’ve got a photo up in his nursery, and it was one of the first words that he said—apart from ‘mama,’ ‘papa,’ it was then ‘grandma.’ Grandma Diana,” he said. “It’s the sweetest thing, but at the same time, it makes me really sad because she should be here.”

By the Way They Live Their Lives

“There’s not many days that go by that I don’t think of her, you know?” William said in Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy. “Sometimes sad, sometimes very positively. You know, I have a smile every now and again when someone says something, and I think that’s exactly what she would have said or she would have enjoyed that comment. So, they always live with you—the people that you lose like that—and my mother lives with me every day.”

“I have no doubt that my mum would be incredibly proud of me,” Harry said in The Me You Can’t See. “I’m living the life that she wanted to live for herself, living the life she wanted us to be able to live. So, not only do I know she’s incredibly proud of me but that she’s helped me get here. And I’ve never felt her presence more as I have done over the last year.”

Prince Harry is sharing a few precious details about home life for himself and Meghan Markle after recently welcoming their second bundle of joy.

On Wednesday, June 30, the 36-year-old Duke of Sussex celebrated the recipients of the 2021 WellChild Awards with a private event held at Kew Gardens in London. During the socially distant garden party, he shared thoughts about how life has changed since he and his wife welcomed daughter Lilibet “Lili” Diana on June 4.

At one point, fellow guest Ed Sheeran asked Harry about raising Lili in addition to the couple’s 2-year-old son Archie Harrison, and Harry replied, “Two is definitely a juggle,” according to Hello Magazine. For his part, the 30-year-old “Shape of You” singer announced in September that he and wife Cherry Seaborn had welcomed their first child, daughter Lyra

Later, Harry spoke to a different guest and gave more insight into the new routine for Meghan and himself, who are raising their family in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Since 2007, Harry has served as patron of WellChild, a national charity in the U.K. that aids children and young people who are battling serious illness so they can be treated at home instead of needing to stay in a hospital. The categories for the WellChild Awards include Inspirational Child and Young Person, Young Carer, Inspirational Doctor, Outstanding Health Professional and Volunteer.

This is certainly a busy week for Harry, who is set to join brother Prince William for the unveiling of a Princess Diana statue in the Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace on Thursday, July 1. The ceremony will take place on what would have been the 60th birthday for the siblings’ late mother.

Prince Harry is continuing to support organizations close to his heart.

On June 30, the Duke of Sussex surprised the recipients of the 2021 WellChild Awards by presenting them with the honors at a private garden party held at Kew Gardens in London.

The event was hosted by WellChild, a national charity in the U.K. that supports children and young people living with serious illnesses so they can be cared for at home versus the hospital when possible. The awards are presented in the following categories: Inspirational Child and Young Person, Young Carer, Inspirational Doctor, Outstanding Health Professional and Volunteer.

According to a press release, Harry congratulated the winners as they received their awards and spoke with them about how the past year and a half has been for them and their families.

Harry was named patron of WellChild 14 years ago and since then, he’s welcomed two children of his own with Meghan Markle: 2-year-old son Archie Harrison and newborn Lilibet “Lili” Diana.

“Since becoming patron of WellChild in 2007, this organization and the people within it have held an extraordinarily special place in my heart,” Harry said in a statement. “I wasn’t a father at the time, and yet the stories of these children and parents transcended that. I didn’t need to be a dad to feel the impact of this invaluable work. Now as a father of two, I feel all the more connected, inspired and in awe of the resilience of these families, who power through indescribable challenges with the support of WellChild.”

“The health of our children, of all of us, could not have been more on the forefront of our minds during the past year,” he continued. “And, throughout this time, the WellChild community has set an example for how to show up and act with compassion for each other. I could not be prouder to be here, to meet this year’s WellChild Award winners, to thank the nurses and doctors for all they do, and to celebrate these amazing families.”

Ed Sheeran, Ronnie Wood, Amanda Holden, AJ Pritchard, Abby Quinnen and Anne-Marie joined Harry at the socially distant garden party. The Duke of Sussex, who stepped back as a working member of the royal family last year but continues to work with private patronages, traveled from the U.S. to the U.K. on Friday. According to People, he then isolated for five days, per COVID guidance.

On July 1, Harry will join his brother Prince William for the unveiling of a statue of the late Princess Diana in Kensington Palace’s Sunken Garden. As the princes previously announced, “The statue was commissioned to mark the twentieth anniversary of her death and recognize her positive impact in the UK and around the world.” It will be revealed on what would have been her 60th birthday.

On June 28, Harry made a virtual appearance at the Diana Award ceremony and gave an address to the young leaders who were being recognized for their social action and humanitarian work.

“Later this week, my brother and I are recognizing what would have been our mum’s 60th birthday, and she would be so proud of you all for living an authentic life with purpose and with compassion for others,” he said. “Our mum believed that young people have the power to change the world. She believed in your strength because she saw it day in and day out and in the faces of young people exactly like you. She witnessed a boundless enthusiasm and passion, and I too see those same values shine through.”

Regardless of the score, Prince George has already won at this game.

On Tuesday, June 29, Kate Middleton and Prince William‘s 7-year-old son headed to Wembley Stadium to watch England and Germany compete in a must-see soccer match.

Before the game even began, however, Prince George got fans talking when he appeared on TV during the national anthem. As mom and dad sang every word, the elementary school student appeared a bit distracted by all the lights, players and crowd.

At the same time, Prince George certainly dressed to impress as he matched dad in a navy blue jacket, shirt and tie. As for Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge was patriotic as she wore the England flag colors through a bright red Zara blazer and white top.

As it turns out, Prince George wasn’t the only famous face in attendance for today’s game. David Beckham enjoyed a father-son day with Romeo Beckham while Ed Sheeran experienced date night with wife Cherry Seaborn.
