Harry Potter's Jessie Cave Says She Was "Treated Like a Different Species" After Gaining Weight

Harry Potter's Jessie Cave Says She Was "Treated Like a Different Species" After Gaining Weight

  • In a new interview, Jessie Cave, who played Lavender Brown in three Harry Potter films, recalled being "treated like a different species" after gaining weight between movies.

British star Jessie Cave went through a challenging transformation after joining the Harry Potter films, her first major acting role.

In an interview with the U.K. newspaper The Independent, published on Wednesday, June 30, the 34-year-old actress and writer recalled struggling emotionally and feeling that she was treated differently after she put on several pounds after making her debut at age 20 as Lavender Brown in the 2009 movie Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

“I gained a lot of weight after doing Harry Potter, just because I wasn’t starving myself,” the actress shared. “And I was growing up and that’s just what happens.”

Jessie reprised her role in the subsequent seventh and eighth films in the franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2. Filming on the series conclusion began in 2009, less than a year after wrapping production on Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Jessie said that when she returned to reprise her role of Lavender, she “was treated like a different species.” She did not elaborate on who behaved this way towards her.

“It was horrible,” she said. “It was probably more me and my insecurity, knowing that I wasn’t fitting into the same size jeans, but it wasn’t a time where actresses were any bigger than a size 8 [size 6 in the United States]. And in the previous film I had been, and now I was a size 12 [size 10 in the United States]. So that was horrible. It was a really uncomfortable experience.”

Jessie described to the newspaper what it was like living in the Harry Potter spotlight. “But you get a bit bigger, or you’re not as relevant, and it goes off, and you have to make your way in the dark,” she said. “I definitely felt invisible when I gained a little bit of weight. And since then, it’s made me have weird issues with weight and work. And it’s so f–ked up, but it’s just how it is. Women have to deal with that all the time.”

In 2015, in another interview with The Independent, Jessie recalled how she felt at the premiere of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which was released in July 2009 after being delayed for six months due to a recession. “And in that time, I gained a load of weight,” the actress said. “I ended up going to the premiere looking like a Grayson Perry vase. After that, nothing happened. It was a really amazing wake-up call.”

In 2011, Jessie released on YouTube the short parody film What’s In Your Shop?, describing it as “what goes down in Hollywood.” She plays herself and meets with a fictional Hollywood acting coach, who criticizes her for her glasses, hair and “puppy fat.” The woman also dismisses Jessie’s Harry Potter acting credits, saying, “Lavender? OK, that means nothing to me. You might as well say to me you played a cactus.” The acting coach then tells her to fill in her eyebrows, get laser eye surgery, dye her hair, buy Spanx and lose 60 pounds.”

Of her real-life experience trying to expand her acting career in Hollywood, Jessie told The Independent in 2015, “I was treated like I shouldn’t be there, that I should go straight back…It was the most traumatic experience of my life.”

After the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 was released in 2011, Jessie continued to act mainly on British television, appearing in roles in the miniseries Glue, the Black Mirror episode “Hang the DJ” and the series Trollied. She also had a small part in the 2012 film Great Expectations.

Nowadays, she is a mother of three, including an 8-month-old baby boy. She continues to act and is also a published author. Her debut adult novel Sunset was released on June 24.

“If I’d stayed thin – unnaturally thin, unhappily thin – I would have probably got more acting roles, and then I wouldn’t have started writing,” Jessie told The Independent in her most recent interview. “And then I don’t know who I would be now because writing is who I am. I’m almost grateful that I gained all that weight.”

Prince Harry is sharing a few precious details about home life for himself and Meghan Markle after recently welcoming their second bundle of joy.

On Wednesday, June 30, the 36-year-old Duke of Sussex celebrated the recipients of the 2021 WellChild Awards with a private event held at Kew Gardens in London. During the socially distant garden party, he shared thoughts about how life has changed since he and his wife welcomed daughter Lilibet “Lili” Diana on June 4.

At one point, fellow guest Ed Sheeran asked Harry about raising Lili in addition to the couple’s 2-year-old son Archie Harrison, and Harry replied, “Two is definitely a juggle,” according to Hello Magazine. For his part, the 30-year-old “Shape of You” singer announced in September that he and wife Cherry Seaborn had welcomed their first child, daughter Lyra

Later, Harry spoke to a different guest and gave more insight into the new routine for Meghan and himself, who are raising their family in Santa Barbara, Calif.

“We’ve been lucky so far,” Harry said about Lili, according to Hello. “She’s very chilled and seems happy to just sit there while Archie is running around like crazy.”

Since 2007, Harry has served as patron of WellChild, a national charity in the U.K. that aids children and young people who are battling serious illness so they can be treated at home instead of needing to stay in a hospital. The categories for the WellChild Awards include Inspirational Child and Young Person, Young Carer, Inspirational Doctor, Outstanding Health Professional and Volunteer.

This is certainly a busy week for Harry, who is set to join brother Prince William for the unveiling of a Princess Diana statue in the Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace on Thursday, July 1. The ceremony will take place on what would have been the 60th birthday for the siblings’ late mother.

Prince Harry is continuing to support organizations close to his heart.

On June 30, the Duke of Sussex surprised the recipients of the 2021 WellChild Awards by presenting them with the honors at a private garden party held at Kew Gardens in London.

The event was hosted by WellChild, a national charity in the U.K. that supports children and young people living with serious illnesses so they can be cared for at home versus the hospital when possible. The awards are presented in the following categories: Inspirational Child and Young Person, Young Carer, Inspirational Doctor, Outstanding Health Professional and Volunteer.

According to a press release, Harry congratulated the winners as they received their awards and spoke with them about how the past year and a half has been for them and their families.

Harry was named patron of WellChild 14 years ago and since then, he’s welcomed two children of his own with Meghan Markle: 2-year-old son Archie Harrison and newborn Lilibet “Lili” Diana.

“Since becoming patron of WellChild in 2007, this organization and the people within it have held an extraordinarily special place in my heart,” Harry said in a statement. “I wasn’t a father at the time, and yet the stories of these children and parents transcended that. I didn’t need to be a dad to feel the impact of this invaluable work. Now as a father of two, I feel all the more connected, inspired and in awe of the resilience of these families, who power through indescribable challenges with the support of WellChild.”

“The health of our children, of all of us, could not have been more on the forefront of our minds during the past year,” he continued. “And, throughout this time, the WellChild community has set an example for how to show up and act with compassion for each other. I could not be prouder to be here, to meet this year’s WellChild Award winners, to thank the nurses and doctors for all they do, and to celebrate these amazing families.”

Ed Sheeran, Ronnie Wood, Amanda Holden, AJ Pritchard, Abby Quinnen and Anne-Marie joined Harry at the socially distant garden party. The Duke of Sussex, who stepped back as a working member of the royal family last year but continues to work with private patronages, traveled from the U.S. to the U.K. on Friday. According to People, he then isolated for five days, per COVID guidance.

On July 1, Harry will join his brother Prince William for the unveiling of a statue of the late Princess Diana in Kensington Palace’s Sunken Garden. As the princes previously announced, “The statue was commissioned to mark the twentieth anniversary of her death and recognize her positive impact in the UK and around the world.” It will be revealed on what would have been her 60th birthday.

On June 28, Harry made a virtual appearance at the Diana Award ceremony and gave an address to the young leaders who were being recognized for their social action and humanitarian work.

“Later this week, my brother and I are recognizing what would have been our mum’s 60th birthday, and she would be so proud of you all for living an authentic life with purpose and with compassion for others,” he said. “Our mum believed that young people have the power to change the world. She believed in your strength because she saw it day in and day out and in the faces of young people exactly like you. She witnessed a boundless enthusiasm and passion, and I too see those same values shine through.”

Prince Harry is ready to celebrate the life and legacy of Princess Diana.

On Friday, June 25, a spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex confirmed he arrived in the U.K. ahead of his late mother’s 60th birthday. The father of two arrived in London before traveling to his and Meghan Markle‘s residence at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.

The prince will quarantine at the fully-remodeled cottage for five days before attending the unveiling of a statue of Princess Diana, which will commemorate “the twentieth anniversary of her death and recognize her positive impact in the UK and around the world,” according to a statement from Kensington Palace.”

Last August, Harry and older brother Prince William announced the tribute in a joint statement, revealing the statue will be installed at the Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace, where people from all over the world can visit to “reflect on their mother’s life and her legacy.”

The prince’s uncle Earl Charles Spencer previously said in a Good Morning Britain appearance that he anticipates the ceremony will be an “emotional” one. “I remember my father always used to talk about the day Diana was born, 1st July 1961, and it was a sweltering hot day and this wonderful daughter appeared,” he shared, according to Hello!. “It’s so funny to be of an age now where your slightly older sister’s 60.”

The 57-year-old earl added his sister is “much missed and much loved.”

Meanwhile, Meghan remains home in Santa Barbara, Calif., along with their son, Archie Harrison, 2, and their newborn daughter, Lilibet “Lili” Diana, 3 weeks. The duchess welcomed Lili, who was named after both Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana, on June 4.

It’s unclear when Prince Harry and Meghan will bring their kids to meet the rest of the royal family, but Kate Middleton recently told reporters, “I wish [Lili] the very best. I can’t wait to meet her. We haven’t met her yet. I hope that will be soon.”

Harry Potter’s Bonnie Wright Reveals Where She Thinks Ginny Weasley Is Today

Harry Potter’s Bonnie Wright Reveals Where She Thinks Ginny Weasley Is Today

  • Bonnie Wright, who played Ginny Weasley in the Harry Potter movies, revealed what she imagines her character and her husband, Harry, are up to almost 10 years after the final installment.
  • Watch: “Harry Potter’s” Helen McCrory Dead at 52 After Cancer Battle

Harry Potter fans, get ready for a blast from the past—or maybe even a glimpse into a fictional present!

Bonnie Wright revealed her predictions on where her character, Ginny Weasley is today, and the answer is simply spellbinding. The 30-year-old actress shared her thoughts during a recent appearance at the grand re-opening of the Warner Bros. Studio tour in Hollywood, Calif., which will include new Harry Potter-themed activations.

“We know she became a professional Quidditch player,” Bonnie shared. “So, she’s probably super sporty.” Although fans might have predicted that answer, it sounds like Ginny would also be enjoying an enviable lifestyle, too.

“She’s probably jet-setting around the world, and the kids would be at Hogwarts and having more freedom,” she continued. “I have so much fun making these stories up! I often wonder what their house would look like, where would they be living, and what happens next.”

As fans may recall, the younger sister of Ron Weasley and Ron’s best friend a.k.a the main protagonist, Harry Potter (played by Daniel Radcliffe), ended up falling in love and becoming a couple when the series’ ending jumped 19 years into the future. According to the ending, the couple also ended up having three children. So, what does Bonnie think happened to the pair’s fairytale romance?

“She and Harry are, of course, still together and having lots of fun,” she said. “He’s keeping things under control and busy being a dad.”

Not only does Bonnie still hold admiration for her memorable role, but she also added that she continues to think fondly of the impact the entire wizardry-centered series had on audiences throughout the years.

“As time has gone on since we finished the last film, I feel like my love and respect for it has grown more and more,” the actress explained. “I’ve now been able to process what the whole thing was from the other side. When you’re in the middle of the experience, you’re busy being present, and you don’t have the time to think of the enormity of it all.”

Bonnie WrightMike Danenberg / Universal Studios Hollywood

“I’ve learned so much and met so many incredible people,” she continued. “I especially love meeting young fans who weren’t even alive when the movies were out. I just think, ‘Wow! This is going to keep going in that generational kind of way.'”

And although it’s been quite a while since the students of Hogwarts got together for an action-packed adventure, Bonnie also revealed that the cast has kept in touch, thanks to a special group chat.

“The typical thing where we check in on one another to see what we’ve been up to,” she shared. “We always keep up with our milestones, like, you know, when people celebrate 10 years after they’ve graduated. In theory, now, it’s been 11 years. Last summer, we were all celebrating our 10-year anniversary of graduating from Hogwarts. Hopefully, we’ll be able to have a delayed graduation celebration soon outside of our chat.”

With any luck, we’ll see the star-studded cast make that wish come true sometime soon. Fingers (and wands) crossed!

See Olivia Wilde React to Questions About Harry Styles Romance

See Olivia Wilde React to Questions About Harry Styles Romance

  • Fresh from her stay over the pond, Olivia Wilde was asked all about her reported romance with Harry Styles—including whether she thinks he’ll eventually be an Oscar winner.
  • When it comes to asking Olivia Wilde about her rumored budding romance with Harry Styles, let’s just say, we’re not exactly taking it as a sign of the times.

The Booksmart director recently touched down at LAX after reportedly spending a few months in London with the “Sign of the Times” singer—and visiting her two children, 6-year-old Otis and 4-year-old Daisy, who she shares ex Jason Sudeikis. However, when asked by paparazzi about her thoughts on Harry’s future in acting, she remained pretty tight-lipped.

After thanking a photographer on complimenting her as a talented filmmaker, it did naturally lead to him asking one very crucial question since she has the expertise to give a little guess: Does Harry have an Oscar in his future?

“You know I’m not gonna talk,” Olivia replied. “You know it’s not gonna happen.”

The cameraman behind the lens also asked the star if she believes the singer has a lot of potential, to which she nodded with a slight smile.

The curious question isn’t too far off base, considering the two first sparked romance rumors earlier this year after being spotted getting cozy at a friend’s wedding. In addition to the reported relationship, she and Harry have just wrapped filming on her upcoming psychological thriller, Don’t Worry Darling.

Olivia and her film’s costume designer Arianne Phillips confirmed the “Watermelon Sugar” artist’s participation in a December 2020 interview with Vogue and gushed at their excitement of having him on board.

    Olivia Wilde, Harry StylesShutterstock

“She and I did a little victory dance when we heard that we officially had Harry in the film, because we knew that he has a real appreciation for fashion and style,” Olivia shared. “I’m really grateful that he is so enthusiastic about that element of the process—some actors just don’t care.”

And what’s more is that when Harry decided to wear a dress for his own Vogue photo shoot last fall, Olivia was one of his most vocal supporters. “To me, he’s very modern and I hope that this brand of confidence as a male that Harry has—truly devoid of any traces of toxic masculinity—is indicative of his generation and therefore the future of the world,” she told Vogue. “I think he is in many ways championing that, spearheading that. It’s pretty powerful and kind of extraordinary to see someone in his position redefining what it can mean to be a man with confidence.”

Since the actress has yet to confirm the romance rumors, it looks like it’s still mum’s the word between these two.
