James Charles Returns to YouTube After Months of “SelfReflection”

James Charles Returns to YouTube After Months of “SelfReflection”

  • James Charles posted a new video on YouTube to address the "most important wake-up call of my entire life." It comes three months after he was accused of sending "inappropriate" messages to minors.
  • Watch: James Charles & Morphe Part Ways Amid Sexual Allegations With Minors

James Charles is back on YouTube after “a lot of self-reflection.”

In a new video titled “An Open Conversation,” Charles spoke about what he has learned since stepping away from YouTube in April, amid allegations from two minors that he had inappropriate conversations with them on social media.

“I owe a massive apology to anybody I have hurt or anybody I made uncomfortable with my actions,” Charles said in an April video. He alleged the two victims told him they were 18, and he “engaged in flirty conversation” until learning their real ages.

On Friday, July 2, Charles acknowledged it would be “ridiculous and irresponsible to try to just come back to social media and pretend like nothing happened, and move on with regularly scheduled makeup programming.”

In fact, the beauty influencer confessed that the claims have been “the worst but most important wake-up call of my entire life for a lot of different reasons.” The 22 year old added, “This is by far the most embarrassing thing to ever happen to me.”

At the start of his new sit-down, he addressed viewers’ reactions to his last video, saying that “one of the biggest pieces of feedback that I got was that I felt really, really and genuine and scripted, and that really, really sucks because that video was not scripted.”

The makeup expert recapped his response at the time, noting, “In that video, [I] talked about how basically two guys that [had] come forward with stories on social media about how I had inappropriate contact with them when they were under the age of 18… I did mention in that video that they had lied to me about their age.”

James Charles, YouTube, An Open ConversationYouTube

Though he was “upset” by the allegations, he said he realized at the time that, “At the end of the day, as the adult and the person with the platform, it was 1,000 percent my responsibility to be doing my due diligence and checking into the people that I was speaking to, and I failed to do that,” he admitted. “And that really, really sucks and that’s why I uploaded that video, because I felt as though it was really hard for me to hold myself accountable, give people an explanation as to what went down, and most importantly apologize to the people that were actually affected by my actions.”

Now, Charles has a few more thoughts to share about the allegations.

Namely, he said he doesn’t want anyone calling it a “scandal,” because it’s “just not an appropriate word to be using with this situation.” As he explained, “There’s no denying that I’ve been in my fair share of scandals online, but using that word with this situation just feels really, really wrong, and it really feels like it’s making light of what actually happened, and I don’t want to do that. I definitely have not been taking this lightly.”

Charles, who has dealt with drama within the YouTube community for years, said he has spent the last two years “changing my behavior,” including the ways he has been “dating and flirting with guys.”

Following the allegations from the minors, he said, “It really looks as though I have made no progress.”

“I am so, so sorry for disappointing you guys and letting you down once again,” Charles continued. “As scary as it is to think about, I’ve also come to terms with the fact that this isn’t just something that I can move on from. I am aware that, you know, no matter what I say in this video or 10 videos down the line or a year’s worth of videos down the line, these stories and accusations are going to follow me for the rest of my life and the rest of my career, and that sucks so much.”

He reflected, “It’s so horrifying and embarrassing, but at the end of the day, it’s my own fault and my own responsibility to, you know, take accountability for what I did.”

In February, Charles denied he “groomed” a minor on Snapchat. At the time, a 16 year old said that the YouTuber asked for pictures of their “body.”

In a statement, Charles responded, “The accusation that I have groomed this person is completely false.” Per Charles, they added each other on Snapchat and the victim claimed to be 18, so Charles started “flirting.” After learning the teen was 16, Charles told them he was “uncomfortable” with the situation, according to the vlogger.

The Instant Influencer producer vowed in his statement, “Because of situations like this, instead of taking someone’s word for it, I now will ask to see the ID or passport of every [person] I have a conversation with.”

He posted his “Holding Myself Accountable” video in April, and then parted ways with his longtime beauty sponsor, Morphe. “In light of the recent allegations against James Charles, Morphe and James have agreed to end our business relationship,” the brand said in a statement. “It is and has always been Morphe’s goal to create a positive, safe, and empowering space where all beauty lovers can freely share their artistry and passion for cosmetics, and Morphe is committed to furthering that goal.”

Ultimately, Charles said in his new video, “All I can do is just learn from that situation and figure out how to better protect myself and be more careful moving forward, and that I promise is exactly what I’m going to be doing.”

James Franco to Pay $2.2 Million in Sexual Misconduct Lawsuit Settlement

James Franco to Pay $2.2 Million in Sexual Misconduct Lawsuit Settlement

  • James Franco and his colleagues have agreed to pay $2.2 million to settle a class action lawsuit, after two former film students accused them of "sexual harassment, exploitation and coercion."
  • James Franco and his associates will pay more than $2 million to settle a sexual misconduct lawsuit.

In February, The Disaster Artist actor reached a tentative settlement over a 2019 class action lawsuit, which accused him, as well as Vince Jolivette and Jay Davis, of fraudulently running the Rabbit Bandini production companies and Studio 4 film school for their personal and financial benefit. The plaintiffs, former students Sarah Tither-Kaplan and Toni Gaal, also alleged claims of sexual harassment, exploitation and coercion.

Now, details of the payout are being finalized, pending judge approval, according to the joint motion dated June 24 and obtained by E! News.

Franco and the other defendants will pay $894,000 to settle Tither-Kaplan and Gaal’s sexual exploitation claims, including a one third allotment for their attorney’s fees. That means Tither-Kaplan will receive $670,500, minus her attorney fees of $223,500, and Gall will receive $223,500, minus her attorney fees of $74,500.

They will also pay $1.341 million to two class funds. Seventy-five percent of the funds will go to the Master Fraud Class (for anyone that paid tuition to one or more Master Class courses at Studio 4 Film School during the class period) and 25 percent will go to the General Fraud Class (for anyone that paid tuition for any course at Studio 4 Film School in Los Angeles or New York during the period).

The parties also agreed on additional “non-economic relief” as well, but they’re requesting to present them to the judge under a confidential seal.

The settlement resolves the claims from Tither-Kaplan and Gaal of sexual exploitation and fraud, and the parties are requesting the class claims to be dismissed without prejudice.

In the 2019 lawsuit, Tither-Kaplan and Gaal accused Franco of “widespread inappropriate and sexually charged behavior towards female students by sexualizing their power as a teacher and an employer by dangling the opportunity for roles in their projects.” They alleged that “young” women in the acting classes were “routinely pressured to engage in simulated sex acts that went far beyond the standards in the industry.”

Franco, Jolivette and Davis have disputed and denied the claims “at all points during this litigation,” per the motion. “Defendants contend that they provided students with all benefits and services that were promised to them with respect to their attendance at the film school,” the court document reads. “Defendants also deny all claims related to sexual harassment, exploitation, and/or coercion.”

Tither-Kaplan and Gaal decided to settle after weighing several factors, according to their lawyers. “While Plaintiffs believe firmly in the strength of their case, they are also mindful of the significant risks in proceeding to a trial on the issues in this litigation. On balance, these factors weigh strongly in favor of the Settlement,” the motion reads.

In response to E! News’ request for comment, Franco’s representative re-sent the joint statement that is also agreed upon in the settlement by all parties.

“While Defendants continue to deny the allegations in the Complaint, they acknowledge that Plaintiffs have raised important issues; and all parties strongly believe that now is a critical time to focus on addressing the mistreatment of women in Hollywood,” it reads. “All agree on the need to make sure that no one in the entertainment industry—regardless of sex, race, religion, disability, ethnicity, background, gender or sexual orientation—faces discrimination, harassment or prejudice of any kind.”

In 2018, Tither-Kaplan and four other women accused Franco of sexual misconduct in a Los Angeles Times exposé. At the time, Franco said the claims were “not accurate.” He told Stephen Colbert, “In my life, I pride myself on taking responsibility for things that I’ve done. I have to do that to maintain my well-being.”

The Deuce actor continued, “I do it whenever I know that there’s something wrong or needs to be changed, and I make it a point to do it. The things that I heard that were on Twitter are not accurate, but I completely support people coming out and being able to have a voice because they didn’t have a voice for so long. So, I don’t want to shut them down in any way. It’s, I think, a good thing, and I support it.”

Franco settled a separate lawsuit with one of his former students in 2019. Ryan Moody claimed he was deceived into giving up the rights to five early drafts that he wrote for Franco’s 2017 movie, The Disaster Artist, for just $5,000. Moody’s attorney Brian M. Grossman told E! News that the suit was resolved and settled, but did not reveal the terms. E! News reached out to Franco’s attorney at the time and did not hear back.

James Gandolfini's Son Michael Dives Into Sopranos Origin Story in ActionPacked Prequel Trailer

James Gandolfini's Son Michael Dives Into Sopranos Origin Story in ActionPacked Prequel Trailer

  • Take a closer look at Tony Soprano's youth in the first trailer for The Many Saints of Newark. Check out the intense, new trailer which stars James Gandolfini’s son Michael.
  • Watch: Did “The Sopranos” Kill Tony Soprano in the Series Finale?

Before he was a crime boss with an uncertain fate, Tony Soprano (Michael Gandolfini) was a New Jersey teen with a dream of going to college.

So, what went wrong? Well, as the new trailer for The Sopranos prequel film, The Many Saints of Newark, teased, a mentorship from Dickie Moltisanti (Alessandro Nivola) and disdain from his mother Livia (Vera Farmiga) may’ve led him astray.

“You lead by example,” Dickie comments as chaos unfolds in the first look below. “He’ll make the right decision. This kid’s got what it takes.”

It’s clear the new prequel film, which arrives October 1 on HBO Max and in theaters, will unpack Tony’s origin story in a way we could’ve never expected. It doesn’t hurt that Michael is reprising his late dad James Gandolfini‘s role.

“Young Anthony Soprano is growing up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark’s history,” teased Warner Bros Pictures’ description. “Becoming a man just as rival gangsters begin to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family’s hold over the increasingly race-torn city. Caught up in the changing times is the uncle he idolizes, Dickie Moltisanti, who struggles to manage both his professional and personal responsibilities—and whose influence over his impressionable nephew will help make the teenager into the all-powerful mob boss we’ll later come to know: Tony Soprano.”

The new trailer puts it best when it declares: “Legends aren’t born. They’re made.”

Thanks to a slew of younger actors, the film revives characters we’ve come to know and love, including Junior Soprano (Corey Stoll), Paulie Gualtieri (Billy Magnussen) and Silvio Dante (John Magaro). And, as we mentioned above, The Many Saints of Newark also introduces the late Sopranos star’s son.

In a 2019 interview with Esquire, Michael revealed that the process was more intense than he could’ve imagined.

“As an actor, I had to watch this guy who created the role, to look for mannerisms, voice, all those things I would have to echo,” he said of his dad, who passed away in 2013 at age 51 following a heart attack. “But then I’d also be seeing my father. I think what made it so hard was I had to do it alone. I was just sitting alone in my dark apartment, watching my dad all the time.”

Thankfully, Michael stuck with the role, which seems to be the perfect way to honor James’ legacy.

James Corden Addresses Backlash Over "Spill Your Guts" Segment

James Corden Addresses Backlash Over "Spill Your Guts" Segment

  • After criticism sparked on social media over James Corden's long-running late-show segment, "Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts," the host has acknowledged the outcry.
  • Watch: Why James Corden Loves Creating Viral Moments

James Corden has gotten wind of the criticism over his “Spill Your Guts” segment.

The Late Late Show host recently responded to mounting complaints over the game, one that’s been featured on the show for at least five years now. As viewers have seen, the late-night host and a guest sit at a round table featuring a lineup of food items. Each takes a turn asking a juicy question while the other is faced with either answering that question or eating one of the items.

However, some have called out the segment on social media for making fun of foods that are significant to other cultures. TikTok user Kim Saira has amassed more than 2 million views to a video she posted about Corden’s segment with Jimmy Kimmel from 2016, calling it “racist af.”

During the sit-down, the two stars reacted to items such as a 1,000-year-old egg, pig blood curd and balut, a fertilized duck egg known in Filipino food. “Wow, it all looks so terrible,” Kimmel quipped. Corden added, “It’s really disgusting. It’s horrific.”

Saira had some different words for the segment. “They’re calling Asian food disgusting on live TV,” she wrote in her TikTok video. “Huh. This is literally racist. This is so disrespectful wtf.”

A petition Saira launched—calling for changes to the food in the game or removal of the segment altogether—has since amassed more than 45,000 signatures, nearly completing its 50,000 goal.

“The foods that are presented are meant to be ‘gross,’ as they are supposed to encourage the guest to answer his questions instead. However, many of the foods that he presents to his guests are actually from different Asian cultures. He’s presented foods such as balut, century old eggs, and chicken feet, and which are often regularly eaten by Asian people,” Saira explained in the petition. “During these segments, he’s openly called these foods ‘really disgusting,’ and ‘horrific.’ In the wake of the constant Asian hate crimes that have continuously been occurring, not only is this segment incredibly culturally offensive and insensitive, but it also encourages anti-Asian racism. So many Asian Americans are consistently bullied and mocked for their native foods, and this segment amplifies and encourages it.”

The petition is also asking for James to issue an apology on the show and for funds to be donated to local Asian American organizations helping Asian-owned restaurants and small businesses.

Corden is apparently in the process of tackling the first request. “We heard that story, and the next time we do that bit we absolutely won’t involve or use any of those foods,” Corden told Howard Stern in a recent interview, per Deadline. “As you said at the start, our show is a show about joy and light and love, we don’t want to make a show to upset anybody.”

As for the changes ahead, it seems the direction will be food of the diet-unfriendly variety. “In the same way that when we played it with Anna Wintour,” Corden said, “we gave her a pizza covered in cheeseburgers.” Correction: They gave her bacon-wrapped pizza, but you get the idea.

Actor James Michael Tyler is opening up about his years-long health battle for the first time.

In an interview with Today‘s Craig Melvin, Tyler—who played Jennifer Aniston‘s coffee shop manager Gunther on Friendsshared that he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in September 2018 after a routine physical.

“I was 56 years old at the time, and they screen for PSA, which is prostate-specific antigen,” he said on Today. “That came back at an extraordinarily high number…So I knew immediately when I went online and I saw the results of my blood test and blood work that there was obviously something quite wrong there. Nearly immediately, my doctor called me and said, ‘Hey, I need you to come in tomorrow because I suspect that you may have quite a serious problem with your prostate.'”

As he soon learned, the cancer had spread to his bones. “For my specific prognosis, it’s of course stage 4,” he told Melvin. “Late stage cancer. So eventually, you know, it’s gonna probably get me.”

“I missed going in for a test, which was not a good thing,” Tyler noted. “So the cancer decided to mutate at the time of the pandemic, and so it’s progressed.” According to Today, Tyler, who is undergoing chemotherapy, can no longer walk.

Tyler now wants to help others, urging men to ask for a PSA test at their next doctor’s appointment. “There are other options available to men if they catch it before me,” Tyler said on Today. “Next time you go in for just a basic exam or your yearly checkup, please ask your doctor for a PSA test. It’s easily detectable.”

Ally Brooke Recalls Feeling “Destroyed” After DWTS Controversy Involving James Van Der Beek

Ally Brooke Recalls Feeling “Destroyed” After DWTS Controversy Involving James Van Der Beek

  • Ally Brooke recently opened up about the Dancing With The Stars controversy that occurred after she advanced in the competitive show instead of fan favorite James Van Der Beek.
  • Watch: Ally Brooke Answers Burning Fan Questions

The hardest thing Ally Brooke had to deal with on Dancing With the Stars had nothing to do with learning the Paso Doble or mastering the waltz.

The Fifth Harmony singer sat down with her former DWTS partner Sasha Farber for the June 2 episode of her YouTube series, The Ally Brooke Show. And the two, who competed together as partners on the hit show in 2019, spoke about their experience hitting a snag once she and Dawson’s Creek alum James Van Der Beek (whose dancing partner was Sasha’s wife, Emma Slater) faced off in the bottom two during the semifinals.

“He nearly didn’t dance the semifinals due to a family issue,” Sasha recalled. “It was just hard. It was hard to process because it was us in the bottom two and we made it and they didn’t. I remember at one point you [Ally] were like, ‘No, no, no, I want to give my position away to James.’ And I was like standing there. My wife is crying, James was crying, you’re crying. I was crying… You know, it’s crazy. This is just a TV show, it’s just a dance show, but people build such strong bonds.”

Ally shared that she felt James was not only deserving of her spot because of his talent, but also because he managed to perform even though he and his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, were in the middle of suffering a devastating loss during that particular week.

“It was horrible,” Ally recalled. “And especially the week he had—the devastation of losing a baby—him having the strength to still go on the show and perform and dance. To me, it just did not make sense. I’m like, ‘This does not make sense. There’s no way. I know America is rooting for him and voted for him.’ It was just a bunch of mixed emotions…He was the one to watch during the season because he always performed beautifully.”

James Van Der Beek, Ally Brooke, Dancing With the StarsABC

The 27-year-old singer also recalled the backlash she received from being saved by the judges for the third time during the show.

“I just remember after the show I wanted to quit,” she revealed. “I want to give this to James. I don’t want to be here. I was done. It was such an emotional punching bag for me and then on top of that I got a lot of hate because the judges saved me.”

“You don’t understand how much that can destroy someone,” Ally continued. “That destroyed me and it took me back to the really bad space where I was after X-Factor. My audition aired and I got so much hate there and that tore me apart. And then [it] also brought back a lot of memories of getting online hate for like, you know, my body or my dancing in Fifth Harmony. I just felt like man, I can’t take this.”

Though Ally said she remains friends with 44-year-old Van Der Beek, calling him a “remarkable soul” that “helped give her advice,” she said that whole experience still haunts her to this day.

“I’m still mad about that,” she admitted. “I still think he should’ve been in the finals.”
