Schitt's Creek Star Annie Murphy Recalls Being "Unable to Get Up" Amid Battle With Depression

Schitt's Creek Star Annie Murphy Recalls Being "Unable to Get Up" Amid Battle With Depression

  • In a new interview, Schitt's Creek actress Annie Murphy looks back at this past year and talks about her battle with depression.
  • For six seasons, Annie Murphy played Alexis Rose on Schitt’s Creek, bringing smiles to viewers’ faces with her character’s “Ew David” one-liners, celebrity-filled backstories, and self-described “T.Rex” arms.

Because fans often associate the actress with this role, they expect her to always be as bubbly as the daughter of the Rose family. But Annie isn’t Alexis, and she experiences real-life struggles just like everybody else.

In a new interview for The Zoe Report, Annie talks about mental health and her battle with depression last year.

As she told the outlet, she went through a difficult time during the Schitt’s Creek farewell tour in January 2020, turning to her co-star Noah Reid to help her put on a “brave face” for the audience and then returning home to cry.

She was scheduled to begin filming her new series Kevin Can F**k Himself in March. But due to the coronavirus pandemic, that was put on pause and she flew home to spend lockdown with her family.

“My mom was like, ‘You’re crying 12 times a day hysterically, to the point where your teeth are chattering,'” she recalled. “‘That’s not normal.'”

So, she started seeing a therapist, who diagnosed Annie with depression. “A lot of people are going to think that I sound like I’m playing a tiny violin for myself,” she told The Zoe Report. “‘Oh, you’re rich and famous. Why the f–k are you sad? You have nothing to be sad about.’ But I’m not going to post photos of me covered in my own snot, lying on the floor, unable to get up. I don’t want people to have to see that. [And] as excited as I was to get this huge part on [Kevin], I do not think if I had gone to work when I was supposed to go to work, I would have been able to do my job.”

Annie continued going to therapy and began taking antidepressants. “I do not cry every single day on the floor 12 times… I am able to focus on other things in my life,” she shared. “Now, honestly, if a friend’s like, ‘I’m having a really hard time,’ I’m like, ‘Get on drugs. Get on drugs!’ You don’t have to be on drugs for the whole time, but they truly, truly saved my life in the sense that I was not a functional human being and I was able to be a functional human being.”

And when she returned to take on the part of Allison last fall, she found herself diving deep into her work, making friends and enjoying the process. “Not to toot my own horn because I f–king hate that, but I do feel a sense of resilience,” Annie said, “both from Allison but also being in a real messy mental state going into it.”

Now, she’s ready for this next chapter. And while Annie will always have a place in her heart for Alexis, she’s ready for the world to see her new performance and continue doing what she loves on her terms.

“I don’t need to live up to people’s expectations,” she added. “If it was an indie film, if it was a piece of theater, if it was voice work, whatever that was, for whatever the paycheck was, I just really, really wanted to do something for myself that was a challenge and that I had fun with, that was about something important to me.”

Willow Smith Recalls Witnessing Mom Jada Pinkett Smith Endure "Intense Racism and Sexism"

Willow Smith Recalls Witnessing Mom Jada Pinkett Smith Endure "Intense Racism and Sexism"

  • Before she was the "Whip My Hair" star, Willow Smith saw the treatment her mom faced as a Black woman in music. Read on for the lesson she took from Jada Pinkett Smith that still sticks today.
  • Watch: Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith’s Anniversary: E! News Rewind

For Willow Smith, some of her mom’s most difficult experiences doubled as pivotal lessons.

In a newly published interview for L’Officiel, the 20-year-old cover star recalled following mom Jada Pinkett Smith, then the lead singer of her nu metal band Wicked Wisdom, on tour and bearing witness to the alarming treatment she faced as a Black woman.

“My mom got so much hate,” Willow told the magazine. “It was intense racism and sexism, just packed on to the tens. People giving her death threats, throwing glass at her onstage. Some crazy stuff went down when she was touring with her band.”

“I got to see that hate firsthand,” she added. “It was so scary to me, and I think I internalized a little bit.”

While it’s behavior no one should have had to suffer, how Jada handled such treatment continues to stick with her musical daughter, especially when she is feeling insecure.

“Every time I feel that coming on, I just go back to my memories of my mom and how she would deal with actual physical danger—she just rose above it,” Willow said. “Obviously, she was scared. But she really showed me what ‘womaning up’ really was, by taking a stance and not being afraid of other people’s judgments and perceptions.”

She’s parted with some of her own judgment, too. While she said she previously “really regretted” the “Whip My Hair” phase of her life that unfolded a decade ago, a recent re-listen made Willow change her tune.

“I’m not saying anything that’s against my values, and on top of that, I’m saying things that are in harmony with my values,” she said. “I kind of just had a huge aha and was like, ‘Yo, don’t condemn this side of your life because it gave you a foundation and a platform and a fan base of so many loving individuals who have been by my side through this whole crazy, topsy-turvy journey that I’ve had. Now, I would never take it back.'”

Shawn Mendes Recalls Feeling "Terrified of Being Evil" Following Argument With Camila Cabello

Shawn Mendes Recalls Feeling "Terrified of Being Evil" Following Argument With Camila Cabello

  • Shawn Mendes admitted he and Camila Cabello had a disagreement, when he raised his voice at her and "got so defensive." Here's the lesson he's taking away from the "vulnerable" moment.
  • Watch: Shawn Mendes’ Best Bits From “In Wonder” Documentary

Shawn Mendes is learning how to “Treat You Better.”

The singer revealed he is afraid of being the bad guy in his relationship with Camila Cabello, after the pair recently had an argument.

As he recalled on the Man Enough podcast, “I raised my voice at her and she was like, ‘I don’t like it when you raise your voice. Why did you raise your voice?’ And I got so defensive.”

Shawn went on, “I was like, ‘I wasn’t raising my voice at you!’ And I did raise my voice at her. And I felt her shrink and I felt me grow and I was like, ‘Oh god, this is the worst.’ I’m so terrified of being evil. I’m so scared to be bad. I don’t want to be bad.”

The couple then “had to get in this massive conversation” about this deep-rooted fear, because he didn’t want to be perceived negatively.

“Maybe there even is bad inside of me, and I have to just accept that,” he admitted on the podcast. “And that other part of me, he’s just got to be here and we’ve just got to work together until eventually he gets worked in all of the trauma and all of the kinks get rubbed out of him and he’s OK. But I can’t avoid the fact that there’s a little bit of darkness inside of me and letting that darkness kind of be present is a horrible feeling.”

After he opened up to Camila, she comforted him. This taught Shawn yet another lesson, as he realized that when you’re “being vulnerable” after a fight, you’re really “just defending yourself even better.”

“I made it about my evil and my fear, and she comforted me,” he reflected. “And then it took me like 20 minutes of us separately reading our books to be able to come back to her and be like, ‘God, that was a whole thing and I’m really sorry.'”

Clearly, love has a learning curve and they’re trying to find their harmony.

Last week, the Canadian artist shared a different side of their relationship when he posted a silly video with his “Señorita” collaborator, writing on Instagram, “This is the type of content you signed up for.”

Of course, fans haven’t forgotten about their foot content from back in February. Shawn celebrated Valentine’s Day with a picture of himself kissing her toes. “I kiss your foot cuz I love you @camila_cabello,” he captioned it.

They reportedly met while performing on Austin Mahone‘s 2014 tour. E! News reported they were dating the following year, though stars didn’t confirm their romance until 2019

  • According to Ian Somerhalder, Damon Salvatore came close to having a very different vibe.

The 42-year-old The Vampire Diaries star visited Watch What Happens Live on Thursday, June 24. During the episode, it came out that a fan had heard a story about another prominent performer coming close to landing Ian’s role on the popular series, and she wanted to hear the truth.

After taking a thoughtful pause, Ian opened up about a seemingly tense situation involving his competition. “In the last test of the show, there was a guy who showed up, and he was just trying to play super cool and kind of like psych me out in the room, and I just shut it down, and I said, ‘No way, man—this is my role,'” the Lost alum recalled. “And I went in there and just made it happen.”

Sarah Paulson Recalls Awkward Encounter With Matthew Perry at StarStudded "Make Out Party"

Sarah Paulson Recalls Awkward Encounter With Matthew Perry at StarStudded "Make Out Party"

  • If you're looking for some behind-the-scenes Hollywood tea, Sarah Paulson just dished out a bizarre cup of it in the form of this story involving Carrie Fisher, a make out party and Matthew Perry.
  • Watch: Sarah Paulson Feels “Terrified” Over “Ratched” Release

Well, this is not how we thought today would start.

Sometimes celebrities catch you off-guard with a real gem of a story—and such was the case for Sarah Paulson when she stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday, June 21 in person. During her chat with Jimmy Kimmel, the Ratched star recalled one unforgettable night out with Carrie Fisher early in her career. As Paulson explained, she had to go to a party at an executive’s house by herself, but fortunately, Fisher was also there by herself and they hit it off.

The story got even juicier, however, when the two women left. “She was in front of me in her car and I was in my car,” Paulson described. “She rolled down her window and shouted out, ‘Hey, do you want to come to a party?'”

The American Horror Story star excitedly obliged and ended up going to a party Fisher coined “Gore Vidal‘s make out party,” attended by the likes of Shirley MacLaine and possibly Queen Latifah, Paulson said.

As you might have guessed by the name, kissing was involved. “I didn’t see anyone make out,” she said, “but there was a hat with names in it and you were supposed to make out with whomever you pulled out of the hat.”

Paulson ended up being one of those selections—but it didn’t end well. “Matthew Perry pulled my name out of the hat,” she said of the Friends alum, “and then promptly left the room.”

How did she know Perry pulled her name? Because he told her. “I was like, ‘Uh, well let’s kiss!'” Paulson recalled, “and he was like, ‘No.'”

In fairness, Paulson noted that they knew each other through a friend and it was awkward. But, like any good bizarre Hollywood tale, this one comes full circle.

“We ended up playing romantic partners years later on a show called Studio 60,” Paulson said, “and then I got my kiss. I got several kisses.”

Ricky Martin Recalls Feeling “Violated” By Barbara Walters' Question About His Sexuality

  • Ricky Martin, who is married to Jwan Yosef, spoke about being afraid to come out during his early days of fame in an interview for People's Pride issue.
  • Watch: Enrique Iglesias & Ricky Martin Announce Joint Tour!

Ricky Martin was “afraid” to come out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community during the early days of his career.

In an interview for People‘s Pride issue, the American Crime Story alum spoke about what it was like to be asked if he was gay on television by Barbara Walters. At the time, Ricky had not yet publicly shared his sexuality. When Barbara asked him to shut down the rumors that he was gay, he initially refused to answer, and eventually said, “I just don’t feel like it.”

Ricky came out publicly in 2010, and is now married to the artist Jwan Yosef, who he shares four children with. However, he said that he still has “a little PTSD” when he thinks back on Barbara’s invasive question.

“When she dropped the question, I felt violated because I was just not ready to come out,” the “Livin’ La Vida Loca” singer explained to People. “I was very afraid.”

When asked to share what he might do differently, looking back, he admitted that he may have come out during that interview.

“It would’ve been great because when I came out, it just felt amazing,” he shared. “When it comes to my sexuality, when it comes to who I am, I want to talk about what I’m made of, about everything that I am. Because if you hide it, it’s a life-or-death situation.”

Ricky previously opened up about coming out in a 2018 conversation with Trevor Noah on The Daily Show. He explained why it took a lot of courage to make that declaration, which came in the form of a blog post on his website.

“The thing is that I was surrounded by friends that were telling me, ‘Don’t! Don’t come out that will be the end of your career,'” the singer recalled. “It was people that love me, people that mean well and people that were just victims of homophobia. You know, I grew up in this culture that told me that my feelings were horrible, that my feelings were evil. And if you add to that, you know, that I was like a heartthrob, like a sex symbol.”

Ultimately, Ricky decided to come out after he had his now 12-year-old twins, Valentino and Matteo, via surrogate.

“I had my kids, and I said, ‘I have to come out,'” he explained to Trevor at the time. “I mean, I’m not going to lie to these beautiful kids. To lie? No, that’s not the point.”

Now, the dad gets to live happily in his truth.

Meghan Trainor is giving fans more details about welcoming her first child on Feb. 25 with husband Daryl Sabara.

The 27-year-old “Lips Are Movin” singer spoke to Today on Wednesday, June 2 about the challenges that now-3-month-old son Riley faced when he joined the world.

“It was one of those horror stories where he didn’t cry,” Meghan shared. “He didn’t make noise when he came out. I was like, ‘Why isn’t he crying?’ Then they told me he was having breathing issues. It was terrifying.”

After he was born, Riley was taken to the hospital’s NICU, where he used a feeding tube. Meghan recalled that not getting to bond with him right away was particularly difficult.

“I got to see him for one second before they took him away. That was probably the worst part,” she continued. “It was definitely a rough start. But we’re so lucky we got to bring him home after five days.”

Back in February, Meghan had announced on Instagram that Riley arrived one week early at a healthy weight of 7 pounds and 8 ounces.

“This sweet baby boy’s due date was today on Valentine’s Day. We got to meet him Monday, Feb 8th!” the star wrote at the time. “We are SO IN LOVE [crying emoji]. Thank you @darylsabara for the best Valentine’s gift ever! Welcome to the world Riley!”

In April, she gave offered more information about Riley’s journey by sharing a video to TikTok showing him hooked up to tubes and monitors shortly after birth.

“We had a rocky start…but thanks to the amazing nurses, doctors, and pediatricians, Riley is a perfect, healthy and happy baby,” she captioned the video back then.

In December 2020, Meghan—who tied the knot with 28-year-old Spy Kids franchise alum Daryl in December 2018—revealed she had been diagnosed with gestational diabetes, a temporary condition that can lead to breathing difficulties in babies.

  • Ally Brooke recently opened up about the Dancing With The Stars controversy that occurred after she advanced in the competitive show instead of fan favorite James Van Der Beek.
  • Watch: Ally Brooke Answers Burning Fan Questions

The hardest thing Ally Brooke had to deal with on Dancing With the Stars had nothing to do with learning the Paso Doble or mastering the waltz.

The Fifth Harmony singer sat down with her former DWTS partner Sasha Farber for the June 2 episode of her YouTube series, The Ally Brooke Show. And the two, who competed together as partners on the hit show in 2019, spoke about their experience hitting a snag once she and Dawson’s Creek alum James Van Der Beek (whose dancing partner was Sasha’s wife, Emma Slater) faced off in the bottom two during the semifinals.

“He nearly didn’t dance the semifinals due to a family issue,” Sasha recalled. “It was just hard. It was hard to process because it was us in the bottom two and we made it and they didn’t. I remember at one point you [Ally] were like, ‘No, no, no, I want to give my position away to James.’ And I was like standing there. My wife is crying, James was crying, you’re crying. I was crying… You know, it’s crazy. This is just a TV show, it’s just a dance show, but people build such strong bonds.”

Ally shared that she felt James was not only deserving of her spot because of his talent, but also because he managed to perform even though he and his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, were in the middle of suffering a devastating loss during that particular week.

“It was horrible,” Ally recalled. “And especially the week he had—the devastation of losing a baby—him having the strength to still go on the show and perform and dance. To me, it just did not make sense. I’m like, ‘This does not make sense. There’s no way. I know America is rooting for him and voted for him.’ It was just a bunch of mixed emotions…He was the one to watch during the season because he always performed beautifully.”

James Van Der Beek, Ally Brooke, Dancing With the StarsABC

The 27-year-old singer also recalled the backlash she received from being saved by the judges for the third time during the show.

“I just remember after the show I wanted to quit,” she revealed. “I want to give this to James. I don’t want to be here. I was done. It was such an emotional punching bag for me and then on top of that I got a lot of hate because the judges saved me.”

“You don’t understand how much that can destroy someone,” Ally continued. “That destroyed me and it took me back to the really bad space where I was after X-Factor. My audition aired and I got so much hate there and that tore me apart. And then [it] also brought back a lot of memories of getting online hate for like, you know, my body or my dancing in Fifth Harmony. I just felt like man, I can’t take this.”

Though Ally said she remains friends with 44-year-old Van Der Beek, calling him a “remarkable soul” that “helped give her advice,” she said that whole experience still haunts her to this day.

“I’m still mad about that,” she admitted. “I still think he should’ve been in the finals.”

Candis Cayne Recalls Confronting CSI Director Over Inaccurate Portrayal of Trans Women

Candis Cayne is inarguably a trailblazing actress.

The blonde bombshell first made her TV debut in 1995 but it wasn’t until her 2007 turn on CSI: NY where Cayne got her “first big role,” as she explains in an exclusive sneak peek of E!’s True Hollywood Story: Transgender Hollywood, airing tonight (June 7).

“It was originally for a drag performer to do a Britney Spears-esque style performance on stage and then she gets killed in the men’s bathroom at the stall,” Cayne says of portraying a CSI murder victim.

Yet the premise didn’t sit right with Cayne, who wanted to accurately represent the trans community onscreen. “I went up to the director and I said to her, ‘Listen, I’m trans and no trans woman would go into the men’s bathroom,'” Cayne remembers. “And so I said, ‘I can’t do something that a trans person wouldn’t do on camera.'”

Thanks to Cayne’s statement, the scene was re-written to instead feature her character being drowned in the ladies’ room toilet.

Following her CSI: NY episode, Cayne was invited to audition for a pilot that included a love triangle between a married man and trans woman. “In the past, all the trans roles would go to cis woman and so I thought since this is a primetime network that they probably won’t go for the trans actor,” Cayne explains. “But then I got a call back and they said, ‘You got it.'”

Cayne made history as the first trans woman in TV history to play a recurring character on a primetime network series. The show Dirty Sexy Money featured Cayne as Carmelita, the other woman to Billy Baldwin‘s Patrick Darling character. Donald SutherlandPeter Krause and Jill Clayburgh also co-starred.

As actress and transgender rights advocate Angelica Ross comments in the clip, Cayne was “our celebrity before we were allowed to have trans celebrities in the mainstream.”
