James Gandolfini's Son Michael Dives Into Sopranos Origin Story in ActionPacked Prequel Trailer

James Gandolfini's Son Michael Dives Into Sopranos Origin Story in ActionPacked Prequel Trailer

  • Take a closer look at Tony Soprano's youth in the first trailer for The Many Saints of Newark. Check out the intense, new trailer which stars James Gandolfini’s son Michael.

Before he was a crime boss with an uncertain fate, Tony Soprano (Michael Gandolfini) was a New Jersey teen with a dream of going to college.

So, what went wrong? Well, as the new trailer for The Sopranos prequel film, The Many Saints of Newark, teased, a mentorship from Dickie Moltisanti (Alessandro Nivola) and disdain from his mother Livia (Vera Farmiga) may’ve led him astray.

“You lead by example,” Dickie comments as chaos unfolds in the first look below. “He’ll make the right decision. This kid’s got what it takes.”

It’s clear the new prequel film, which arrives October 1 on HBO Max and in theaters, will unpack Tony’s origin story in a way we could’ve never expected. It doesn’t hurt that Michael is reprising his late dad James Gandolfini‘s role.

“Young Anthony Soprano is growing up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark’s history,” teased Warner Bros Pictures’ description. “Becoming a man just as rival gangsters begin to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family’s hold over the increasingly race-torn city. Caught up in the changing times is the uncle he idolizes, Dickie Moltisanti, who struggles to manage both his professional and personal responsibilities—and whose influence over his impressionable nephew will help make the teenager into the all-powerful mob boss we’ll later come to know: Tony Soprano.”

The new trailer puts it best when it declares: “Legends aren’t born. They’re made.”

Thanks to a slew of younger actors, the film revives characters we’ve come to know and love, including Junior Soprano (Corey Stoll), Paulie Gualtieri (Billy Magnussen) and Silvio Dante (John Magaro). And, as we mentioned above, The Many Saints of Newark also introduces the late Sopranos star’s son.

In a 2019 interview with Esquire, Michael revealed that the process was more intense than he could’ve imagined.

“As an actor, I had to watch this guy who created the role, to look for mannerisms, voice, all those things I would have to echo,” he said of his dad, who passed away in 2013 at age 51 following a heart attack. “But then I’d also be seeing my father. I think what made it so hard was I had to do it alone. I was just sitting alone in my dark apartment, watching my dad all the time.”

Thankfully, Michael stuck with the role, which seems to be the perfect way to honor James’ legacy.

Why Jared Padalecki Is Now "Good" With Jensen Ackles After Supernatural Prequel Drama

Why Jared Padalecki Is Now "Good" With Jensen Ackles After Supernatural Prequel Drama

  • On Friday, June 25, Jared Padalecki revealed where he stood with former Supernatural co-star Jensen Ackles after their prequel series drama. See what he had to say!

    Brothers for life.

On Friday, June 25, Jared Padalecki took to Twitter to give an important update amid the drama surrounding the announced Supernatural prequel series. As E! News readers know, the Walker star, who played Sam Winchester for 15 years on The CW hit, said he was “gutted” after he learned that his on-screen brother Jensen Ackles was developing a prequel show for the mystery drama, and that he was not consulted.

However, it seems this drama was short-lived as Jared revealed that he had a productive chat with Jensen, who played Dean Winchester on Supernatural.

“@JensenAckles and I had a great talk, as we do often, and things are good,” he assured his social media followers. “The show is early in the process with miles to go. We’ve travelled a lot of roads together, and sometimes those damn roads have bumps. Bumps don’t stop us. Once brothers, always brothers. #spnfamily”

Jensen, who will star in season three of The Boys, also confirmed that the drama had been squashed after an effective phone call. “Love you @jarpad,” he said on his Twitter account. “Miss these talks. I forgot how much face time we always used to get. And I miss that too. I know you’re busy…as am I, but you’re still my brother. I miss you, pal.”

This is certainly a more positive update following Jared’s tweets on June 24. After Jensen shared an article breaking the prequel news, Jared wrote, “Dude. Happy for you. Wish I heard about this some way other than Twitter. I’m excited to watch, but bummed that Sam Winchester had no involvement whatsoever.”

Unlike Jensen, who is set to narrate and produce the new series, Jared appeared to have no planned involvement with the prequel project. When one fan called this drama “a bad joke,” he defended, “No. It’s not. This is the first I’ve heard about it. I’m gutted.”

Despite his frustrations, Jared made it clear that he didn’t wish his longtime co-star any ill will, asking fans online, “Hey world. Thank you for the love. Please PLEASE don’t send any hate or threats. I care deeply about everybody involved and would be in true misery if any of them were harmed or threatened.”

Thankfully, all seems to be well now between the former co-stars.

Jensen and Danneel Ackles Are Bringing a Supernatural Prequel to The CW

Jensen and Danneel Ackles Are Bringing a Supernatural Prequel to The CW

  • The CW is working on a prequel to Supernatural that would tell the story of John and Mary Winchester, with Jensen and Danneel Ackles executive producing. Get the details!
  • You didn’t think the Winchesters would really stay away from The CW for long, did you?

Supernatural its on its way to a return in the form of a prequel series, produced by none other than Jensen Ackles and his wife and occasional Supernatural co-star, Daneel Ackles. According to Deadline, the series would be called The Winchesters, and tells the oft-referenced story of John and Mary Winchester, played in the original series by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith. Jensen will reprise his role as Dean Winchester to narrate the new story, which is being written by former Supernatural co-executive producer Robbie Thompson.

“Before Sam and Dean, there was John and Mary,” reads the show description. “Told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester, The Winchesters is the epic, untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world.”

“After Supernatural wrapped its 15th season, we knew it wasn’t over. Because like we say in the show, ‘nothing ever really ends, does it?'” Jensen said in a statement to Deadline. “When Danneel and I formed Chaos Machine Productions, we knew the first story we wanted to tell was the story of John and Mary Winchester, or rather the Supernatural origin story. I always felt like my character, Dean, would have wanted to know more about his parents’ relationship and how it came to be. So I love the thought of having him take us on this journey.”

Fans of Supernatural will know John and Mary’s story fairly well, since much of the show was focused on Sam and Dean’s complicated feelings about their parents. Mary was a hunter who retired to start a family, only to be killed by a demon when Sam (Jared Padalecki) was just six months old (she got resurrected 33 years later and then killed again, but that’s not really relevant).

Her husband John, who had no idea his wife was a former supernatural monster hunter, then became a hunter in order to get revenge, and raised Sam and Dean to be hunters as well. He disappeared when the boys were in their 20s, and thus began the show Supernatural.

Fans of Supernatural may also remember that the series ended with Dean dying during a hunt, but it’s unclear if Dean will now be narrating the story of his parents from Heaven.

Supernatural has attempted two spinoffs before, but neither one moved forward. Wayward Sisters followed a group of woman who had been orphaned by supernatural tragedy as they trained to become monster hunters, and the other, called Bloodlines, would have explored the monster and hunter cultures in Chicago.

Hopefully this spinoff has some better luck!

Disney+ Is Doing a Beauty and the Beast Musical Prequel Series

Disney+ Is Doing a Beauty and the Beast Musical Prequel Series

  • A new origin story for Gaston and LeFou is coming to Disney+, and it sounds like some questions will be answered.
  • No one fights like Gaston, douses lights like Gaston or stars in a Beauty and the Beast prequel series like Gaston.

Disney+ has greenlit a new musical series that serves as a prequel to the 2017 live-action movie version of Beauty and the Beast, which starred Emma Watson as the titular beauty and Dan Stevens as the titular beast. Neither of those stars will be in the prequel series, however, as it focuses on Gaston (Luke Evans), LeFou/Louie (Josh Gad) and a new character in the form of Louie’s stepsister Tilly (Briana Middleton). The show also comes complete with a new soundtrack by legendary Disney composer Alan Menken

The new story is set years before the events of Beauty and the Beast and follows Gaston, LeFou and Tilly on an “unexpected journey” after a surprising revelation from Tilly’s past comes to light, according to the Disney+ press release. “While the mysteries of the past are uncovered and the dangers of the present grow, old friends and new enemies reveal that this familiar kingdom harbors many secrets.”

Gad will also write and executive produce the series alongside Once Upon a Time creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. Tony-nominated director Liesl Tommy will also serve as an executive producer.

A statement from Disney Branded Television president Gary Marsh reveals that the show will also delve into the origins of the beast’s curse.

“For anyone who’s ever wondered how a brute like Gaston and a goof like LeFou could have ever become friends and partners, or how a mystical enchantress came to cast that fateful spell on the prince-turned-beast, this series will finally provide those answers…and provoke a whole new set of questions,” he said.

What Gaston, LeFou and LeFou’s stepsister have to do with the beast’s curse remains to be seen, but we can’t say we’re shocked that the most irritating man in all the Disney princess movies is somehow involved.

Production on this fascinating musical extravaganza will begin in spring 2022.
