Here's What It's Really Like to Plan a Wedding During a Pandemic

Here's What It's Really Like to Plan a Wedding During a Pandemic

  • While weddings are coming back, many engaged couples still face cancelations and postponements. So, how do you plan a wedding during COVID-19? An E! News bride-to-be takes us through her journey.
  • Leanne Gutierrez, Foster Rubin, Love in LockdownInstagram @laurengutierrez

Love is not canceled. Or at least that’s what all the wedding blogs I read say.

As the coronavirus pandemic changed the way we shop, travel and savor disinfectant wipes, millions of brides-to-be were stopped in their tracks as they tried to make their way down the aisle. Weddings were postponed, turned into elopements and “micro-weddings” (an option gaining more popularity during COVID) or canceled altogether.

So despite being incredibly happy when I got engaged to my fiancé Foster Rubin in August 2020, I couldn’t help but think about when it would be safe enough to actually have our wedding. I wasn’t into the idea of a micromony. I did not want to compromise on the bigger wedding I had always envisioned since I was a little girl. For me, it was go big (our initial guest tally hovered just above 175) or stay at home.

A full-on roller coaster of emotions came immediately after I said “yes”. At that point, any kind of gathering was considered dangerous. How was I supposed to wrap my head around a big event, with half the people flying in from the other side of the country? My fiancé and I knew we’d have to wait out the pandemic to hold our dream event. But would it ever be safe enough to happen?

Having been fantasizing about my wedding day since roughly age 10, never once did I consider scanning contracts for force majeure and “Act of God” clauses, taking pains to hire vendors that wouldn’t go out of business in a year and a half (a very real concern!), not being able to hug all my friends and extended family once the proposal happened, etc. It was like being handed the keys to the castle, but discovering the moat was filled with crocodiles. And I thought the hardest part would be finding the guy!

Watch: “The Wedding Planner” Turns 20: E! News Rewind

Not knowing where to start, I turned to traditional resources like Mindy WeissWedding Book (my bridal bible!), but also Facebook COVID bride support groups—yes, they are real and helpful—@betchesbrides on Instagram and their awesome podcast, and other places on social media where thousands of newly engaged brides could find solace and laugh at this crazy, highly emotional journey.

I found spaces where brides would vent together about dance floors being banned, guest counts being cut (how do you politely uninvite someone to your wedding?), deposits being lost, etc. It felt nice to be part of a community where COVID brides turned to each other for advice, opinions and help in circumstances that seemed helpless.

With a squad in place, my fiancé and I started to visit venues, and it was clear that most wedding staff were struggling to roll with the punches during the pandemic. We visited several potential locations along the California coast until we found The One: The Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort. The oceanfront grounds took my breath away, but most importantly, their wedding point person Amanda Wolters explained how they’d work with us to postpone or cancel/refund us if COVID got in the way of our wedding.

That was my biggest fear while planning: That another round of COVID would strike and we’d lose our deposits if we couldn’t legally hold a big event, a situation many brides faced in the last year. The resort’s policy—a rarity among the venues we checked out—helped get our minds around the idea of putting down a deposit and trusting that we were in good hands.

One task down, fifty bajillion to go.

As COVID numbers started to decrease in Southern California and vaccinations began, event restrictions slowly lifted and the race to book wedding venues and vendors was on. Even though we were over a year and a half out, we lost our initial wedding date choices because other couples had already booked up the month of September! The wedding industry was definitely backlogged and we were competing with a bunch of 2020 brides and grooms.

Though choosing a date felt a little like a stab in the dark back then (how did we know when things would be safe again?), we ended up locking in August 19, 2022. And after we booked the venue, I tried blindly reaching out to vendors all by myself. It took me maybe a week to see that a seasoned wedding planner was necessary. Enter: Meg Herzer of Events by M&M.

As a COVID bride herself, she made me feel like I was in good hands from the second we first spoke. Scouring through her glowing reviews, I saw that she’d already combatted countless COVID wedding scenarios with grace, and that her brides were grateful to have her.

    photos

Still, as we recruited our dream wedding line-up—photographer, videographer, welcome party venue—I had to become an amateur contracts attorney, scanning endless paperwork for that must-have clause that would allow us to reschedule their services or refund our deposit, should COVID force us to move our wedding. Luckily, we found awesome businesses like Lin & Jirsa and El Paseo Restaurant who would work with us in case something happened. All I can say is pick a team based on their ability to adapt to change. Check WeddingWire or The Knot reviews, and you can tell pretty quickly who will have a plan A, B, C and D!

    Leanne Gutierrez

With vaccinations now rapidly rolling out across the country, we are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

Brides and grooms are becoming more confident about pulling off a safe event, and many are requiring guests to get vaccinated or at least COVID-tested before the big day. The “wedding boom”, as The New York Times put it, is upon us, and judging by our friends and family, people will be ready to get out and party after the year we’ve had!

That all-important phrase “in sickness and in health” has never meant more to me than it does after this experience. Though planning my wedding is more challenging than I ever expected, my fiancé and I can finally start to relax now that the COVID numbers are going down and we can confidently envision our special day.

I am so lucky to have the most amazing future husband, family and friends that saw me through all the bridal freak-outs and scary moments of the last year. I’m not ashamed to admit there have been more than a few tears planning this thing, but if anything, it has made us even more excited to say “I do” and to celebrate with everyone we love…safely! Perhaps the wedding blogs are right: Love is not canceled.

How Emily Simpson Really Feels About "Shocking" RHOC Cast Shakeup & Heather Dubrow's Return

How Emily Simpson Really Feels About "Shocking" RHOC Cast Shakeup & Heather Dubrow's Return

  • The Real Housewives of Orange County star Emily Simpson explains why she was "shocked" to learn of Kelly Dodd's departure, and teases what's in store for Heather Dubrow.
  • Watch: Heather Dubrow Returns to “RHOC” as Kelly, Braunwyn & Elizabeth Exit

Not everyone thought it was time for a The Real Housewives of Orange County cast shakeup.

RHOC star Emily Simpson didn’t expect Kelly DoddBraunwyn Windham-Burke and Elizabeth Lyn Vargas to be axed ahead of season 16 of the Bravo reality series. Even though Kelly was “expecting to be fired” for a quite a while due to her controversial comments, Emily exclusively told E! News that the June 15 announcement left her “shocked.”

“I had no idea that they were going to make that many changes,” Emily told E! News exclusively on Tuesday, June 29 at the Veganic Nail Spa Grand Opening in Costa Mesa, Calif. “There are a lot of times where people or even Andy [Cohen] will say something like a reboot. First of all, I don’t even know what reboot means. Do you mean recast or reboot? So I really, honestly, didn’t think there would be that big of changes. I mean it was a shock, like shocking, shocking. I was shocked so many times in one day. I was traumatized.”

Emily even joked “I didn’t think I was going to make it” when discussing the “cutthroat” recasting.

“It bothers me when fans become really critical of the last season because I feel like people aren’t understanding the obstacles that we had to deal with,” Emily explained. “I felt like it was a very odd season. It was short, but it was weird. We don’t normally film for two weeks and then shut down for six months and then have to self-film. That was bizarre…The fact that we even got 14 episodes and that you even got us on camera, it really was a huge feat.”

Emily will even miss Kelly, who slammed former co-star Braunwyn on social media following the news of their dual firing. “Kelly and I got close over the last three years and we were really good friends, so it’s hard to see someone all the time in like a work situation and then that person isn’t there. That’ll be an adjustment,” Emily admitted.

However, the attorney is eager to film season 16 with new stars, including returning cast member Heather Dubrow. “I’m excited about meeting Heather because we have some mutual friends and the only thing I’ve heard about her were good things,” Emily gushed. “I’m excited about their being new girls because I really feel like we need some fresh Orange County faces that have fabulous lives, husbands and careers.”

She’s also looking forward to becoming closer to co-star Gina Kirschenheiter. “We have such a fun, solid friendship,” she beamed. “When we get together, we just have a good time.”

Shannon Beador is also returning for another season.

Emily is putting her new face forward after receiving a lower facelift (“I just have one chin now”) and an improved jawline.

“When I get all those comments from women that are like, ‘Oh my gosh. You didn’t need plastic surgery. You must have insecurity issues. You really need to work on your inside.’ It’s like, no, I don’t need to work on my inside,” Emily clapped back. “I need to work on my outside because I’m 45 years old, I gained 40 pounds, lost it, and now I have three chins and it bothers me so I did it for myself.”

Yes, Sex/Life's Adam Demos Really Stripped Down for That Shower Scene

Yes, Sex/Life's Adam Demos Really Stripped Down for That Shower Scene

  • Still drooling over Adam Demos' shower scene in Netflix's Sex/Life? Here's everything we know about the totally nude moment.
  • Watch: “Law & Order” & More TV Shows We’re Excited for in 2021

If you’re like us, Netflix‘s new drama Sex/Life is making you sweat this summer.

The NSFW series, which premiered Friday, June 25 on the streaming service, has viewers tweeting up a storm and it’s all thanks to the Sex/Life stars Sarah ShahiAdam Demos and Mike Vogel. The title certainly gives it away that the buzz-worthy drama has plenty of sexy scenes, but one moment seems to be the break out.

We’re, of course, talking about Adam going full frontal for a jaw-dropping shower scene. While female nudity is common in cable and streaming shows, it’s still rare to see male actors go buck naked for a part. So, you can understand why everyone is fascinated with this spicy scene.

Namely, many have been curious to learn whether Adam really stripped down fully for Sex/Life or if he used a body double. Thankfully, in a recent interview with Collider, showrunner and creator Stacy Rukeyser weighed in on the appendage that’s broken the internet.

    TV’s Steamiest Shows

“No,” she commented. “That’s not a body double. I mean, people usually ask is it real or is it a prosthetic?”

Still, the TV writer and producer remained coy on whether Adam utilized a prosthetic for the scene, adding, “And I can tell you what Adam Demos says about it, which is, a gentleman never tells. So, we are leaving that up to the viewer’s imagination.”

Adam also discussed the show’s nudity with Entertainment Weekly, noting that he was “OK with it because you read the script and know what you’re getting yourself into from the start, so I don’t think you would sign on to a show after reading the scripts and then say no last minute. That doesn’t mean you can’t have discussions about comfort level, which they allowed us to have—and with the intimacy coordinator, so it felt a lot safer.”

And, per Stacy, the full frontal moment “was not just for titillation’s sake.” Specifically, the scene was meant to showcase Mike’s character’s obsession with his wife’s ex-boyfriend.

“It was important to show how down the rabbit hole obsessed he has gotten, that he is now stalking his wife’s ex-boyfriend,” she explained. “It’s all internal, there’s no dialogue, and Mike Vogel does such an incredible job with it, but what you’re seeing is him going, ‘I should not be doing this. I should not be following him from his office. Now I’m following him from his office. Oh my God, I should not be following him into the gym. Oh my God, I’m following him into the gym. I am buying clothes. I’m working out. I’m obsessive watching him. He’s going into the shower. I should not go into the shower. Oh, my God, I’m going into the shower. Now I’m in the shower. I should not look down. I should not look down. I cannot help it. Oh, my God.'”

Ultimately, as Stacy put it, this moment was not meant to be a sexual moment, rather, “it’s about intimidation and measuring up and all of that.” Regardless of the scene’s intention, it has become the most eye-catching TV moment of 2021…so far.

Sex/Life is available for streaming on Netflix.

Here's What's Really Going on Between Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott

Here's What's Really Going on Between Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott

  • Are Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott back together? The two looked cozy at their first red carpet event since they split over a year ago. Two sources have weighed in on their pair's relationship status.
  • Watch: Are Kylie Jenner & Travis Scott Back Together?

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott appear to be acting like a couple again, but are they really back together officially?

On Tuesday, June 15, the two attended the 2021 Parsons Benefit at Pier 17 in New York City with their 3-year-old daughter Stormi Webster, marking their first red carpet event since their split more than a year ago. Travis, 26, and Kylie, 23, posed for pics while embracing. Then later onstage, the rapper accepted an award. In his speech, he expressed his love for both Stormi and the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star, calling her “wifey.”

It marked the first time Travis has used his nickname for Kylie publicly since E! News learned in October 2019 that the two were “taking space apart.”

On Wednesday, June 16, a source close to the family told E! News that Kylie and Travis “still have separate houses and are not living together, but they are romantic again and seem very happy with the direction they are headed.”

“Kylie and Travis are very happy and acting like a couple again,” the source said. “They hold hands and are affectionate. They aren’t shy about showing their love for another. They support each other and are a constant in each other’s lives.”

Another source close to Kylie told E! News that the reality star and Travis “have been spending a lot of time together in the last few months and have grown really close,” adding, “They picked up right where they left off. Neither of them has been interested in anyone else over the last year and really love being a family unit together.”

The insider continued, “Travis is enamored by Kylie and would do anything for her and Stormi. He really wanted her back and has been trying for weeks now. Kylie loves seeing Travis as a dad and is grateful they can make it work for Stormi. They have a great thing going right now and are really happy. They have truly always loved each other but needed a break during a busy time in their lives to figure it all out.”

While Tuesday marked the first time Kylie and Travis have been spotted at a red carpet event, the two have often spent time together since their 2019 split as they co-parent Stormi. Most recently, they traveled with their daughter to the rapper’s hometown of Houston, where the adults enjoyed some time on their own on a playground, as seen in a video Kylie shared on Instagram in late May.

“Kylie has been spending time with Travis’ family and really wants Stormi to be close with them,” the first family source told E! News. “They are both into it and love the family they have created.”

In February, another source told E! News that “Kylie and Travis are still madly in love,” adding that while they “spend a lot of time together with Stormi as a family and aren’t ruling out getting back together,” they “aren’t putting pressure on the relationship right now.”

When it comes to relationships, Kendall Jenner and Devin Booker are a winning team.

The model is so happy with the Phoenix Suns player, a source close to the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star told E! News, and “they are crazy about each other.”

“She feels very secure and confident in their relationship,” the insider continued. “She didn’t expect this, but it’s become the healthiest and best relationship she has ever been in. She definitely feels like this is different and more serious.”

And it looks like Kendall’s family members are fans of Devin, too. “Her family loves him and knows how good they are for one another,” the source added. “They love having Devin around and have welcomed him with open arms. They love seeing Kendall so happy with someone who brings out the best in her. It’s exciting for everyone to see her in such a great relationship.”

Kar-Jenner fans got a glimpse of how much Kendall’s siblings adore Devin after she pranked them by putting a ring on that finger and pretending to be engaged for a Poosh game of Truth or Dare. “We were all so excited,” Khloe Kardashian said after learning the announcement was fake. “I was just disappointed it was a little big on your finger.”

Kendall and Devin did, however, reach a major milestone over the weekend by celebrating their first anniversary. The basketball pro marked the occasion by sharing a series of Instagram Stories posts with the numbers “365” “52” and “1” to mark the number of days, weeks and years they’ve been together.

While the two may have officially started dating in June 2020, they had already been sparking romance rumors for months. And even though they tend to keep details of their relationship private, they’ve still shared some subtle PDA. From showing her support with her Phoenix Suns apparel to posting photos of the sweet gifts Devin has given her, Kendall has occasionally provided peeks into their world.

In fact, a source told E! News in April that “this is the happiest Kendall has been in a relationship.”

“Devin is quiet and not interested in being in the spotlight or a celebrity. She really appreciates that about him and is attracted to that. They are really similar and love just being low-key and staying in and laughing together,” the insider said, later adding, “They are a solid couple with no drama. It’s been all positive and Kendall loves being with him.”

Here's How Kourtney Kardashian Really Feels About "Pressure" to Get Back With Scott Disick

    One big happy family?

In an exclusive sneak peak at tomorrow’s all-new Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kourtney Kardashian drops a bombshell about whether or not she considers getting back together with ex Scott Disick in the future.

The exes share three children together: Mason, 11, Penelope, 8 and Reign, 6. While Kourtney and Scott are currently dating other people—Scott is linked to model Amelia Hamlin, and Kourtney has found love with Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker—both Scott and Kourt were single at the time of filming the KUWTK episode, airing June 3.

In the preview, Kourtney and mom Kris Jenner flip through old photo albums. Kris finds a snapshot of a “prom-style” pic with Kourt and Scott posing together, which Kourtney immediately coos over.

“Listen, there’s nothing that I would love more than to see you live your life and grow old with someone and be happy, content and peaceful,” Kris starts a deeper conversation. “It would obviously be so fabulous if it was the dad of your children, you know?”

Kourtney seems to sarcastically shrug off the implication. “Wouldn’t that be a dream,” she replies about Scott.

Kris continues to gush over Scott’s presence within the Kardashian-Jenner family. “I think he fits well with all of us because we’ve all been around each other for so long,” Kris adds. “I think at this stage, from what he tells me, he would love for it to be you and him.”

“He’s a talker,” Kourt claps back.

In a confessional, Kourtney reveals that she is over her family butting in about her relationship with Scott. “My whole family, for a couple years now, love to just bring up me and Scott getting back together,” she sighs. “It’s frustrating because Scott and I have had our own private talks but sometimes I just don’t care to have it be such a conversation all the time, so I’ll just brush it off in a nice way.”

Kourtney tells Kris that both she and Scott just “need more time” being separate from one another and single before fully committing to one another.

“And you’re not under pressure?” Kris asks. “No, I’m good,” Kourt replies.

How Chris Harrison Really Feels About Leaving The Bachelor After "Tough Negotiations"

  • Chris Harrison is coming to terms with his Bachelor exit. A source close to him told E! News he's "saddened to leave" but "grateful for the conclusion and payout" after weeks of negotiations.
  • Watch: Chris Harrison Exits “Bachelor” Franchise Permanently

Bachelor Nation is saying its final farewell to longtime host Chris Harrison.

The TV personality confirmed his permanent departure from The Bachelor series on social media on Tuesday, June 8, following months of uncertainty about his future with the franchise.

“I’ve had a truly incredible run as host of The Bachelor franchise and now I’m excited to start a new chapter,” Chris wrote, adding, “I’m so grateful to Bachelor Nation for all of the memories we’ve made together. While my two-decade journey is wrapping up, the friendships I’ve made will last a lifetime.”

After he defended contestant Rachael Kirkconnell‘s controversial photos in February, he stepped aside from hosting Matt James‘ After the Final Rose special and, more recently, from hosting The Bachelorette this season.

Though his new social media post focuses on all the happy memories, a source close to Chris tells E! News how he really feels about his unceremonious exit.

“Chris is saddened to leave The Bachelor franchise,” the source exclusively shares. “It was his whole life and identity for many years and he was hopeful he would continue his contract.”

The insider says he wanted to keep hosting in 2022 and “has been in tough negotiations for weeks.” However, according to the source, “Ultimately, the studio decided this was what’s best.”

Chris was optimistic that he would be forgiven in due time, the source reveals. “He knows he made a mistake but was hopeful forgiveness would be granted.”

He apologized one day after he defended Rachael’s pictures from a 2018 Old South party. Three days later, he issued another apology when temporarily stepping down from his role as host, writing on Feb. 13, “Now, just as I taught my children to stand up, and to own their actions, I will do the same. By excusing historical racism, I defended it.”

Throughout the turmoil, Chris “had an idea that his end was coming,” the source explains. “[Chris] had a feeling months ago and really came to terms with it.”

He has no plans to return to hosting at the moment, according to the insider, who adds, “He is grateful for the conclusion and payout… He wants to focus on other business ventures.”

Several familiar faces commented on Chris’ goodbye post to wish him well. Arie Luyendyk wrote, “Love you brotha. On to bigger and better things,” while Colton Underwood said, “Love you Chris. Thank you for your friendship.”

Chris was replaced by Bachelorette veterans Tayshia Adams and Kaitlyn Bristowe as hosts for Katie Thurston‘s Bachelorette season, which kicked off on June 7. And David Spade will reportedly step in as the host of Bachelor in Paradise this summer.

As for Matt, he appears to have forgiven Rachael in the months following the scandal. The pair reconciled and were recently spotted on a couples’ retreat in the Hamptons. “Matt and Rachael are in a really good place right now and are getting serious. They are inseparable and talk all day, every day,” another source close to Matt exclusively told E! News last month.

E! News has reached out to Chris’ rep and ABC for comment.
