Here's What It's Really Like to Plan a Wedding During a Pandemic

Here's What It's Really Like to Plan a Wedding During a Pandemic

  • While weddings are coming back, many engaged couples still face cancelations and postponements. So, how do you plan a wedding during COVID-19? An E! News bride-to-be takes us through her journey.
  • Leanne Gutierrez, Foster Rubin, Love in LockdownInstagram @laurengutierrez

Love is not canceled. Or at least that’s what all the wedding blogs I read say.

As the coronavirus pandemic changed the way we shop, travel and savor disinfectant wipes, millions of brides-to-be were stopped in their tracks as they tried to make their way down the aisle. Weddings were postponed, turned into elopements and “micro-weddings” (an option gaining more popularity during COVID) or canceled altogether.

So despite being incredibly happy when I got engaged to my fiancé Foster Rubin in August 2020, I couldn’t help but think about when it would be safe enough to actually have our wedding. I wasn’t into the idea of a micromony. I did not want to compromise on the bigger wedding I had always envisioned since I was a little girl. For me, it was go big (our initial guest tally hovered just above 175) or stay at home.

A full-on roller coaster of emotions came immediately after I said “yes”. At that point, any kind of gathering was considered dangerous. How was I supposed to wrap my head around a big event, with half the people flying in from the other side of the country? My fiancé and I knew we’d have to wait out the pandemic to hold our dream event. But would it ever be safe enough to happen?

Having been fantasizing about my wedding day since roughly age 10, never once did I consider scanning contracts for force majeure and “Act of God” clauses, taking pains to hire vendors that wouldn’t go out of business in a year and a half (a very real concern!), not being able to hug all my friends and extended family once the proposal happened, etc. It was like being handed the keys to the castle, but discovering the moat was filled with crocodiles. And I thought the hardest part would be finding the guy!

Watch: “The Wedding Planner” Turns 20: E! News Rewind

Not knowing where to start, I turned to traditional resources like Mindy WeissWedding Book (my bridal bible!), but also Facebook COVID bride support groups—yes, they are real and helpful—@betchesbrides on Instagram and their awesome podcast, and other places on social media where thousands of newly engaged brides could find solace and laugh at this crazy, highly emotional journey.

I found spaces where brides would vent together about dance floors being banned, guest counts being cut (how do you politely uninvite someone to your wedding?), deposits being lost, etc. It felt nice to be part of a community where COVID brides turned to each other for advice, opinions and help in circumstances that seemed helpless.

With a squad in place, my fiancé and I started to visit venues, and it was clear that most wedding staff were struggling to roll with the punches during the pandemic. We visited several potential locations along the California coast until we found The One: The Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort. The oceanfront grounds took my breath away, but most importantly, their wedding point person Amanda Wolters explained how they’d work with us to postpone or cancel/refund us if COVID got in the way of our wedding.

That was my biggest fear while planning: That another round of COVID would strike and we’d lose our deposits if we couldn’t legally hold a big event, a situation many brides faced in the last year. The resort’s policy—a rarity among the venues we checked out—helped get our minds around the idea of putting down a deposit and trusting that we were in good hands.

    Leanne Gutierrez

One task down, fifty bajillion to go.

As COVID numbers started to decrease in Southern California and vaccinations began, event restrictions slowly lifted and the race to book wedding venues and vendors was on. Even though we were over a year and a half out, we lost our initial wedding date choices because other couples had already booked up the month of September! The wedding industry was definitely backlogged and we were competing with a bunch of 2020 brides and grooms.

Though choosing a date felt a little like a stab in the dark back then (how did we know when things would be safe again?), we ended up locking in August 19, 2022. And after we booked the venue, I tried blindly reaching out to vendors all by myself. It took me maybe a week to see that a seasoned wedding planner was necessary. Enter: Meg Herzer of Events by M&M.

As a COVID bride herself, she made me feel like I was in good hands from the second we first spoke. Scouring through her glowing reviews, I saw that she’d already combatted countless COVID wedding scenarios with grace, and that her brides were grateful to have her.

    photos
    Couples Married During COVID-19

Still, as we recruited our dream wedding line-up—photographer, videographer, welcome party venue—I had to become an amateur contracts attorney, scanning endless paperwork for that must-have clause that would allow us to reschedule their services or refund our deposit, should COVID force us to move our wedding. Luckily, we found awesome businesses like Lin & Jirsa and El Paseo Restaurant who would work with us in case something happened. All I can say is pick a team based on their ability to adapt to change. Check WeddingWire or The Knot reviews, and you can tell pretty quickly who will have a plan A, B, C and D!

    Leanne Gutierrez

With vaccinations now rapidly rolling out across the country, we are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

Brides and grooms are becoming more confident about pulling off a safe event, and many are requiring guests to get vaccinated or at least COVID-tested before the big day. The “wedding boom”, as The New York Times put it, is upon us, and judging by our friends and family, people will be ready to get out and party after the year we’ve had!

That all-important phrase “in sickness and in health” has never meant more to me than it does after this experience. Though planning my wedding is more challenging than I ever expected, my fiancé and I can finally start to relax now that the COVID numbers are going down and we can confidently envision our special day.

I am so lucky to have the most amazing future husband, family and friends that saw me through all the bridal freak-outs and scary moments of the last year. I’m not ashamed to admit there have been more than a few tears planning this thing, but if anything, it has made us even more excited to say “I do” and to celebrate with everyone we love…safely! Perhaps the wedding blogs are right: Love is not canceled.

Here's Who Will Replace Dennis Quaid as Rick Kirkham in Peacock's Joe Exotic Series

Here's Who Will Replace Dennis Quaid as Rick Kirkham in Peacock's Joe Exotic Series

  • On Thursday, July 1, Peacock revealed that Dennis Quaid, who was set to play producer Rick Kirkham, has departed its Joe Exotic limited series. Here's everything we know.
  • Watch: “Tiger King” Star Joe Exotic’s Memoir Exclusive

William Fichtner is ready to have a wild time with the Joe Exotic series.

On Thursday, July 1, Peacock revealed that the Mom actor has been tapped to replace Dennis Quaid as producer Rick Kirkham in the highly anticipated miniseries. Friendly reminder, earlier in June, The Parent Trap star was announced to play Rick, who played a key role in the Tiger King saga by describing his working experience with the eccentric Joe “Exotic” Schreibvogel.

However, per the streaming service, the 67-year-old actor had to depart the series due to a scheduling conflict. While this is certainly sad news for fans of Dennis, we couldn’t be more excited about his replacement. Not only does William look an awful lot like the Tiger King fan favorite, but he also has a stellar acting resume. Ever heard of Prison Break, Black Hawk Down or Drive Angry? We have!

Tiger King Stars: Where Are They Now?

William is joining an already stacked cast, which includes Kate McKinnon and John Cameron Mitchell as rival big cat owners Carole Baskin and Joe Exotic respectively. Of course, while many people were introduced to this rivalry through Netflix‘s Tiger King docu-series, Joe Exotic is based off the Wondery podcast.

    Tiger KingNetflix

In fact, according to John, the Peacock project will have a totally different tone. “I love what they’re going to be doing with the story,” he teased to E! News in May. “It’s going to be much more deeply felt, heartfelt than the docuseries, which is more sensational.”

We have a feeling this show will be a roaring good time. For everything we know about the Joe Exotic miniseries, scroll through the images below.

    Listen Up

Joe Exotic and his gang of misfits have found mega fame with their Netflix docuseries, but he was first introduced to the world on Wondery’s second season of the podcast Over My Dead Body. The story that the writers at Wondery weaved will be the basis of the new series produced by UCP studios. Together, Wondery’s Hernan Lopez and Marshall Lewy will executive produce the limited series with the help of their star, Kate McKinnon. Etan Frankel will write and executive produce the series, and it will air on Peacock.

    Based on True Events

Per UCP, “Joe Exotic is a limited series based on true events following Carole Baskin (McKinnon), a big cat enthusiast, who learns that when fellow exotic animal lover Joe “Exotic” Schreibvogel is breeding and using his big cats for profit, she sets out to shut down his venture, inciting a quickly escalating rivalry. But Carole has a checkered past of her own and when the claws come out, Joe will stop at nothing to expose what he sees as her hypocrisy. The results prove dangerous.”

    Kate McKinnon as Carole Baskin

UCP confirmed the Saturday Night Live star will be playing the divisive Carole Baskin in the limited series. In a statement, Carole called McKinnon “a wonderful actress” and requested that the show use only CGI tigers instead of real ones.

John Cameron Mitchell as Joe Exotic

Shrill star John Cameron Mitchell, who rose to fame by writing and starring in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, will play the titular eccentric zoo owner who has it out for Carole Baskin.

“I’m thrilled to take on the role of this modern folk antihero,” Mitchell said in a statement. “Joe and I are the same age and like him, I grew up queer in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas so I feel like I know a little bit about this guy and his desperate attempt to conquer an inhospitable world.”

    Dean Winters as Jeff Lowe

As for who will play Joe’s backstabbing friend and fellow big cat enthusiast Jeff Lowe? That will be none other than Oz‘s Dean Winters.

    William Fichtner as Rick Kirkham

Initially, Dennis Quaid was cast to play producer Rick Kirkham. However, due to a scheduling conflict, The Parent Trap actor had to exit the series. In July 2021, it was announced that Mom‘s William Fichtner would step into the role.

Brian Van Holt as John Reinke

In May 2021, it was revealed that Cougar Town‘s Brian Van Holt was cast as John Reinke in the Joe Exotic miniseries. As fans of the Tiger King saga well know, John was the manager for Joe’s zoo, a loyal employee until things got too out of hand.

    Nat Wolff as Travis Maldonado

The Peacock series began rounding out its cast when it tapped Nat Wolff to play one of Joe’s husbands, Travis Maldonado, who passed away in 2017 due to an accidental suicide. Nat confirmed the casting news on Instagram, writing, “Couldn’t be more excited to go on this wild adventure with this talented group of people!”

    Sam Keeley as John Finlay

On Tuesday, June 1, the second of Joe’s husbands was announced. Specifically, Sam Keeley will be joining Joe’s throuple as John Finlay, who was often shirtless and had a headline-making smile in the Netflix docuseries.

In regard to his new role, Sam took to his Instagram story and said he was “very excited to be apart of this.”

    Lex Mayson as Saff

A newcomer, named Lex Mayson, will portray Saff, an employee of Joe’s who lost their arm after a brutal tiger attack.

Joel Marsh Garland as James Garretson

Following his work on Orange Is the New BlackJoel Marsh Garland is set to play James Garretson, Joe’s friend-turned-FBI informant, in the upcoming series.

Who Will Play Doc “Baghavan” Antle?

Will FerrellJim Gaffigan and John C. Reilly are a few of the names that fans believe would be excellent in the role of the mysterious Doc AntleJustin Long personally nominated Jim Gaffigan, telling Dax Shepard they can “sit next to each other at the Oscars.”

    Justice For Don Lewis

Depending on the timeline, there could be new evidence brought to light in the disappearance of Carole’s husband Don Lewis. The Hillsborough County sheriff wrote on Twitter, “Since @netflix and #Covid19 #Quarantine has made #TigerKing all the rage, I figured it was a good time to ask for new leads.” If this happens, the show could have new info to inspire their script.

Joe Exotic does not currently have a premiere date, but will debut on Peacock.

(E! and Peacock are both part of the NBCUniversal family.)

    Here's What's Coming to Netflix July 2021

    Here's What's Coming to Netflix July 2021

  • Netflix is starting off July with a lineup hot enough to set off fireworks! From the Austin Powers trilogy to Charlie’s Angels, see what the streaming service has in store.

Still staying indoors for the summer? Not to worry, Netflix has you covered.

The streaming service announced their July lineup of movies, TV shows and documentaries on June 21 and let’s just say although this summer will be hot, this selection might be even hotter than anything you can imagine.

To kick things off, for every viewer who secretly wishes they were a super cool spy, Netflix will be adding fan favorites including the entire Austin Powers trilogy starring Mike Myers (Yeah, baby, yeah!) and at least one of the Charlie’s Angels movies. (It’s still unclear which version, but we will absolutely take whatever we can get!)

But, for anyone who needs their rom-com fix, don’t sweat—there are plenty of more meet-cute moments for us to fawn and cry over coming next month including Life as We Know It (starring Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel), Love Actually (which features an ensemble cast including Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson) and No Strings Attached, which, as rom-com fans well know, stars Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman. If that doesn’t make your heart skip a beat, the addition of the entire Twilight saga certainly will.

Not to mention, season two of Mindy Kaling‘s hit series, Never Have I Ever, also premieres next month.

And to top it off, if you are looking for a mid-summer thrill, there’s plenty of horror to go around including the Fear Street film trilogy, based on the book series of R.L. Stine. (We’re getting Goosebumps just thinking about it).

Here's the One Thing Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson's Split Does Not Change

Here's the One Thing Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson's Split Does Not Change

  • While Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson are once again split, the reality star will not get in the way of his relationship with their daughter, 3-year-old True Thompson.
  • Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson are once again no more.

On Monday, June 21, news broke that the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star and her longtime on-and-off boyfriend had yet again called it quits, nearly a year after speculation arose over their reconciliation during the coronavirus pandemic.

Unfortunately, renewed concern over his fidelity once again drove a wedge between the two and, according to a source close to Khloe, she broke up with him “very recently.”

“They had been working through the cheating rumors for the last couple of weeks, but Khloe told Tristan he lost all of her trust and the relationship could not be repaired,” the source told E! News. “Khloe really tried, but ultimately, felt too betrayed by him. She’s done and says she will not go back.”

Still, they remain in each other’s lives as a result of the daughter they share, 3-year-old True Thompson. “They have been co-parenting and have seen each other several times in the last week with True,” the source noted, “but are not romantically together.”

A History of Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson’s Relationship

The two are no strangers to co-parenting. Since their split in 2019 amid his cheating scandal with Jordyn Woods and following infidelity claims around the time of True’s birth, Khloe has maintained her commitment to keeping things cordial with Tristan for the sake of their child. According to a source, Khloe won’t let this development get in the way of their father-daughter bond

“Khloe is very levelheaded when it comes to True and the relationship True has with her dad,” a source close to the situation told E! News, “so she will undoubtedly make every effort to ensure that Tristan and True continue to have the same amounts of time that he’s always had with her.”

“No matter what Khloe and Tristan are going through or the status of their relationship,” the source reiterated, “it has never affected True’s relationship with Tristan or the time she gets with him.”

Khloe Kardashian, Tristan Thompson, True ThompsonKhloe Kardashian/Instagram

Still, this split marks a significant change in their dynamic since becoming a full-fledged couple again last year. While they initially raised eyebrows, by October 2020, there was no denying they were back on. When it came time for Tristan’s 30th birthday in March, Khloe very publicly declared her love while referencing their rocky past

“The ones that are meant to be are the ones who go through everything that is designed to tear them apart and they come out even stronger than they were before,” she wrote on Instagram at the time. “Thank you for showing me everything you said you would. For the father you are. For the best friend I have in you. I’m thankful that I can do absolutely nothing with you and it feels like everything. I hope you know today and everyday how loved you are by me and so many.”

Here's What's Really Going on Between Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott

Here's What's Really Going on Between Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott

  • Are Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott back together? The two looked cozy at their first red carpet event since they split over a year ago. Two sources have weighed in on their pair's relationship status.
  • Watch: Are Kylie Jenner & Travis Scott Back Together?

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott appear to be acting like a couple again, but are they really back together officially?

On Tuesday, June 15, the two attended the 2021 Parsons Benefit at Pier 17 in New York City with their 3-year-old daughter Stormi Webster, marking their first red carpet event since their split more than a year ago. Travis, 26, and Kylie, 23, posed for pics while embracing. Then later onstage, the rapper accepted an award. In his speech, he expressed his love for both Stormi and the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star, calling her “wifey.”

It marked the first time Travis has used his nickname for Kylie publicly since E! News learned in October 2019 that the two were “taking space apart.”

On Wednesday, June 16, a source close to the family told E! News that Kylie and Travis “still have separate houses and are not living together, but they are romantic again and seem very happy with the direction they are headed.”

“Kylie and Travis are very happy and acting like a couple again,” the source said. “They hold hands and are affectionate. They aren’t shy about showing their love for another. They support each other and are a constant in each other’s lives.”

Another source close to Kylie told E! News that the reality star and Travis “have been spending a lot of time together in the last few months and have grown really close,” adding, “They picked up right where they left off. Neither of them has been interested in anyone else over the last year and really love being a family unit together.”

The insider continued, “Travis is enamored by Kylie and would do anything for her and Stormi. He really wanted her back and has been trying for weeks now. Kylie loves seeing Travis as a dad and is grateful they can make it work for Stormi. They have a great thing going right now and are really happy. They have truly always loved each other but needed a break during a busy time in their lives to figure it all out.”

While Tuesday marked the first time Kylie and Travis have been spotted at a red carpet event, the two have often spent time together since their 2019 split as they co-parent Stormi. Most recently, they traveled with their daughter to the rapper’s hometown of Houston, where the adults enjoyed some time on their own on a playground, as seen in a video Kylie shared on Instagram in late May.

“Kylie has been spending time with Travis’ family and really wants Stormi to be close with them,” the first family source told E! News. “They are both into it and love the family they have created.”

In February, another source told E! News that “Kylie and Travis are still madly in love,” adding that while they “spend a lot of time together with Stormi as a family and aren’t ruling out getting back together,” they “aren’t putting pressure on the relationship right now.”
