Phylicia Rashad Addresses "Insensitive" Reaction to Bill Cosby's Prison Release

Phylicia Rashad Addresses "Insensitive" Reaction to Bill Cosby's Prison Release

  • After tweeting in support of Bill Cosby's prison release, The Cosby Show's Phylicia Rashad said she didn't intend to diminish the "lifelong residual effects" that assault survivors often face.
  • Phylicia Rashad is responding to backlash over her reaction to Bill Cosby‘s prison release

The actress, who played Cosby’s wife on his eponymous show, tweeted in support of the scorned comedian after Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court vacated his 2018 assault conviction.

“FINALLY!!!!” she wrote on June 30. “A terrible wrong is being righted- a miscarriage of justice is corrected!”

Three hours later, after coming under fire for the tweet and muting her replies, Rashad spoke out again to say she didn’t intend to diminish the pain many sexual assault survivors often face.

“I fully support survivors of sexual assault coming forward,” the This Is Us star, 73, tweeted. “My post was in no way intended to be insensitive to their truth. Personally, I know from friends and family that such abuse has lifelong residual effects. My heartfelt wish is for healing.”

Rashad has been a vocal ally of Cosby, who served almost three years behind bars for a 2018 conviction of three felony counts of aggravated indecent assault.

The state’s Supreme Court said Cosby was released from prison as a result of an agreement he made with a previous prosecutor that prevented him from facing criminal charges in the case.

While a spokesperson for Cosby described the news as “justice for Black America,” Andrea Constand, the woman who accused the star of drugging and assaulting her in 2004, said today’s outcome resulted from a “procedural technicality.”

Her statement read in part, “Today’s majority decision regarding Bill Cosby is not only disappointing but of concern in that it may discourage those who seek justice for sexual assault in the criminal justice system from reporting or participating in prosecution of the assailant or may force a victim to choose between filing either a criminal or civil action.”

Cosby has maintained his contact with Constand was consensual and denied all other allegations of wrongdoing.

In a 2019 jailhouse interview, Cosby said he won’t express remorse for his alleged actions. “I was there,” he remarked at the time. “I don’t care what group of people come along and talk about this when they weren’t there. They don’t know.”

Ellen Pompeo is surprisingly open to hearing all types of feedback from Grey’s Anatomy fans as the long-running medical drama heads into season 18.

The 51-year-old actress tweeted her reaction after a fan of the show criticized the recently completed season 17 as “dumpster [fire emoji] trash!” The fan noted, “I love the show but not this season.”

On Friday, June 18, Ellen posted quite the magnanimous message in response. “All good! Seventeen seasons we can’t please everyone all the time,” the star wrote. “it’s definitely not easy keeping it going and keeping it great… I get it…thanks for checking it out anyway… and thanks for your feedback it matters …sending you love [prayer-hands and kiss emoji].”

But Ellen wasn’t done yet with weighing in on the fan’s appraisal. When a different user praised Ellen for shutting down the criticism, the actress clarified that she wasn’t actually bothered by the initial comment.

“No honestly no shade at all …the only show I’ve ever stuck with until the end was The Sopranos,” Ellen posted.

Later, in apparent response to other individuals who were upset with the fan’s criticism, the star known for playing Meredith Grey went on to further defend viewers’ right to voice their problems with the show.

“But why is someone saying they didn’t like something bad? It’s literally been on for two decades!! Let her live… there is plenty of s–t I don’t like,” Ellen tweeted. She added, “Not to mention people are pretty much allowed to feel however they want after this really f–ked up couple of years we have had.”

This particular season featured plenty of hotly debated story lines and moments, including Meredith’s dream sequences set on the beach as the character battled COVID-19. In addition, season 17 saw the departure of such longtime cast members as Giacomo Gianniotti (Andrew DeLuca) and Jesse Williams (Jackson Avery)

Ellen is known for encouraging open discussion with her fans. In April, she joked around with a fan who didn’t appreciate that the actress was posting spoilers for recently aired episodes.

There are some things a time machine just can’t fix…

Aly Michalka doesn’t seem too pleased by the passing of time. The Easy A actress took to Twitter to give her hilarious take on the 17-year anniversary of the premiere of Phil of the Future, which aired on the Disney Channel from 2004 to 2006.

MTV tweeted out two basically vintage photos of co-stars Aly and Ricky Ullman in the mid-aughts, writing, “IYKYK: #PhilOfTheFuture premiered 17 Years Ago TODAY — and yes, I will forever ship Phil (@ravivullman) & Keely (@alyandaj).”

Aly’s reaction? “S–t I’m old,” the now 32-year-old star wrote, adding a rocket ship emoji. (She was practically a baby at age 15 when it premiered).

As fans of the series know, 2021 is an important year for another reason: It marks 100 years until Phil will travel back in time in 2121.

Twitter users reflected on the milestone in the comments, with one writing, “I was at least three at the time and this series will still be forever be in my heart [sic].” Another shared, “you’re telling me this show can go see a rated r movie on its own…i’m old.”

After playing Keely on Phil of the Future, Aly turned her attention toward music. During that era, the singer released three studio albums in three years as one half of Aly & AJ: 2005’s Into the Rush, 2006’s Acoustic Hearts of Winter and 2007’s Insomniatic.

All these years later (sorry to admit that, Aly), the musicians are center stage once again with the explosion of the “Potential Breakup Song” on TikTok.

Their latest album, A Touch of the Beat Gets You Up on Your Feet Gets You Out and Then Into the Sun, dropped in May and, obviously, we are here for it.

The sister duo will embark on their next tour in February 2022 with stops in Europe and the U.S. Want to see them sooner? Aly & AJ are opening for Orville Peck at Lollapalooza on July 29, the same day that Miley Cyrus, Kim Petras, Jimmy Eat World and more faves will perform.
