How The Bold Type Series Finale Ended

How The Bold Type Series Finale Ended

  • Find out how Jane, Kat and Sutton said goodbye in The Bold Type series finale, which aired June 30 on Freeform.
  • Good news, everyone: The Bold Type stuck the landing.

The beloved Freeform dramedy has come to an end, and we’re happy to report that everything is as it should be, mostly. Season five, as short as it was, has been a little rough, but apparently it was all a means to a nice ending that leaves the trio in all the places they should be.

First, Sutton (Meghann Fahy) and Richard (Sam Page) are back together! After Sutton wrote him a beautiful recommendation for adoption, he told her that as much as he wanted kids, he would never really be happy without her, and now the divorce is off. It was truly all we’ve wanted all season!

Meanwhile, things were a bit more complicated for Kat (Aisha Dee) and Adena (Nikohl Boosheri).

After hooking up again at the end of the last episode, Adena announced that due to Kat’s aversion to commitment, they should just try to work together as friends and push the romantic feelings away. Kat quickly realized she wasn’t into that, and towards the end of the episode, she professed her love and even her commitment to Adena.

Now, she’s got a new/old relationship and a big, new job.

    The Bold Type, Series FinaleFreeform

After an encounter with Pinstripe (Dan Jeannotte) and the realization that being editor-in-chief means she doesn’t get to write anymore, Jane (Katie Stevens) decided to give up the promotion. In her place, she suggested that Kat should get the job, after Kat put together her whole strategy pitch. So now Kat is in charge of Scarlet, while Jane is headed off to travel the world and write.

She’s also hooking up with that bodyguard she interviewed in the last episode, so Tiny Jane is doing just fine. And as the girls spent one last moment in the fashion closet, we can’t deny we shed a tear or two.

For their part, Fahy, Stevens and Dee all told E! News that they were totally satisfied with where their characters ended up in the finale.

“I feel like I cheered for a lot of stuff. Obviously, when Kat and Adena ended up together and Sutton and Richard ended up together and Jasper and Oliver endde up together, and I was cheering for the Pinstripe moments,” Stevens told E! News. “I was really excited when Jane just kind of is like screw it, let’s not go to dinner. Let’s do the deed—Why did I just say that? I hope that everyone who watches this finale is satisfied.”

  • Lo Bosworth shared that she still deals with "trauma" stemming from her time on The Hills, which has led her to firmly distance herself from the current spinoff.

Lo Bosworth has absolutely no desire to release her inhibitions or feel the rain on her skin.

The 34-year-old reality TV personality, who rose to prominence on Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County before becoming a regular part of spinoff The Hills, reminisced about her years in the limelight during an appearance on the podcast Unzipped that was released on Wednesday, June 30.

In explaining her shift to a career as an entrepreneur rather than a life in front of the camera, Lo told co-hosts Shenae Grimes and AnnaLynne McCord that her time on the MTV staples made her realize she doesn’t actually enjoy being on TV. As such, she did not join former co-stars Audrina Patridge, Heidi Montag, Spencer Pratt and the rest of the gang in returning for sequel series The Hills: New Beginnings, which is currently airing its second season.

“It’s interesting to me to see the people that have chosen to continue to participate in The Hills,” she said. Lo continued with a laugh, “I’m like, ‘Wow, you guys are really leaning into your TV persona for whatever reason, right? For a paycheck, for attention, fame—whatever it is that you need that fulfills you.'”

The star, whose given name is Lauren, shared that producers’ decisions in how to shape the characters and story lines became a downside as well. “More so, I was just not interested in other people in an editing thing deciding, ‘OK, for Lauren the person, who are we going to present her and what she’s going to be doing,'” she recalled.

Lo went on to say she would be “totally happy and content if nobody on this Earth knew who I was,” given that she’s now passionate about projects including Love Wellness, the personal care brand she founded. As she explained, her experience as a member of UCLA’s Class of 2008, which overlapped with the peak of The Hills‘ popularity, played into her decision to leave Hollywood in the rearview.

“All of this stuff, like still to this day, makes me feel a little uncomfortable,” Lo said. “Probably, it comes back to just being young, being on TV for the first time, being at college, kids making fun of you. I think that initial trauma has never really left. I would prefer to just be an anonymous person, but I opened Pandora’s box. I can never close it again.”

She added, “But in the way that the people who are doing The Hills are leaning in, I’m leaning in just a totally different direction.”

This is hardly the first time the TV personality has made it clear she has no desire to film again with her former co-stars. On an episode of her Lady Lovin’ podcast in February 2018, Lo said she no longer wanted “any association with any of those people.”

    Mother knows best.

For Lisa Rinna, it’s clear she was left stunned by her daughter Amelia Hamlin‘s romance with Keeping Up With the Kardashians star Scott Disick due to the couples’ 18-year age difference. On tonight’s episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hillswhich aired on June 30, Lisa confessed to her co-stars that she at first couldn’t believe Scott and Amelia’s relationship.

“It’s a what the f––k moment. You’re like, what the f––k?” Lisa revealed to pal Erika Jayne. “She’s 19 and he’s 37 with three kids.”

Scott is dad to Mason, Reign and Penelope with former partner Kourtney Kardashian.

While Erika agreed with Lisa that she is “a little nervous about it,” both Bravo stars had to admit that over a decade age difference isn’t uncommon in Beverly Hills.

Harry [Hamlin] was with Ursula [Andress] when she was 44 and he was 28,” Lisa said of her husband and Amelia’s father. Erika also met estranged husband Tom Girardi when she was 28 and he was 50.

“I am not the person to be talking,” Erika joked.

Lisa hoped that Amelia’s love for Scott is just “a phase,” but the mother of two couldn’t help but ask her castmates later in the episode how to act when she meets the Talentless founder.

“When I meet Scott Disick for the first time, do I need to call him Lord?” Lisa said with a laugh.

Kathy Hilton advised, “Yes, absolutely. And you can do a little curtsy.”

But Kyle Richards, who is close friends with Kris Jenner, wasn’t joking around. “He’s too damn old and he’s got three kids! That’s not a good match,” Kyle stated, adding that she wouldn’t allow her own daughters to date someone so much older.

Garcelle Beauvais didn’t mince words: “Hell no,” she firmly said in her confessional before teasing Lisa, “You might be a grandmother of three!”

As Amelia gets closer to Scott and his kids, it seems Lisa may just have to come to terms with their relationship blossoming even further.

Emma Roberts and Garrett Hedlund are in baby bliss.

Now that they’re a family of three, the stars are in a “really great place” in their relationship, according to a source close to her.

“Emma and Garrett are in a much better place since welcoming their son,” the source exclusively shares with E! News.

The insider admits that the couple “went through a rough patch” while she was pregnant, referring to Garrett’s sobriety struggles.

The Keyhole Garden actor, 36, was arrested for a DUI in January 2020 and a judge later ordered him to seek counseling. Just a few months later, Emma’s mom Kelly Cunningham spilled the news that the couple was expecting their first child.

By November, Garrett was “in a solid and great place” as they prepared to welcome their son, his rep told E! News. “When the incident occurred, Garrett immediately sought treatment which was successful.”

The Scream Queens alum, 30, gave birth to Rhodes Robert Hedlund in December, which has only strengthened the bond between the new parents.

“She brings her baby to set, and everyone is obsessed and think he’s the cutest,” the source adds of the 6-month-old baby. “Emma seems really happy, and her and Garrett are in it for the long haul.”

During her pregnancy, Emma opened up about her fertility challenges and endometriosis diagnosis in an interview with Cosmopolitan. “It sounds cheesy, but the moment that I stopped thinking about it, we got pregnant,” she recalled. “But even then, I didn’t want to get my hopes up. Things can go wrong when you’re pregnant. That’s something you don’t see on Instagram.”

The We’re the Millers star went on, “So I kept it to myself, my family, and my partner, not wanting to make grand plans if it wasn’t going to work out. This pregnancy made me realize that the only plan you can have is that there is no plan.”

After welcoming her “bright light” Rhodes last year, she wrote on Instagram, “Thank you 2020 for getting one thing right.”

Britney Spears' Dad Jamie Spears Petitions Court to Investigate Alleged Conservatorship Mistreatment

Britney Spears' Dad Jamie Spears Petitions Court to Investigate Alleged Conservatorship Mistreatment

  • Britney Spears' father Jamie Spears and her co-conservator have responded in detail to claims the singer made in her court statement against her conservatorship, and her dad demands an inquiry.
  • Watch: Britney Spears Feels “Hopeful” After Conservatorship Hearing

Britney Spears‘ father Jamie Spears has filed legal documents calling for an investigation into the singer’s claims of mistreatment, which she detailed in a scathing court statement against him and the 13-year conservatorship he continues to partially control.

In a petition filed in Los Angeles on Tuesday, June 29, and obtained by E! News, Jamie, 68, said he is “concerned about the management and care of his daughter,” noting that for the past two years, he has not managed her personal or medical affairs. He does co-manage her estate with a financial company.

Britney’s father was responsible for her personal and financial dealings for more than a decade after he was first made her conservator in 2008, following her psychiatric hospitalization. In her court testimony last week, the pop star called her conservatorship “abusive” and requested that it end without her being evaluated by a therapist.

“Mr. Spears requests instructions and an order from the Court to investigate the veracity of the allegations and claims made by Ms. Spears at the June 23, 2021 status hearing,” Jamie’s filing states. “Given the nature of the allegations and claims, it is critical that the Court confirm whether or not Ms. Spears’s testimony was accurate in order to determine what corrective actions, if any, need to be taken. It is also imperative for the proper functioning of conservatorship proceedings before this Court that all parties be provided a full and fair opportunity to respond to allegations and claims asserted against them, including by way of an evidentiary hearing.”

    Framing Britney Spears

However, in her testimony, Britney, 39, put a good amount of blame on her father, speaking in detail about life under what she described as his “control.” She said, “My precious body has worked for my dad for the past f–king 13 years, trying to be so good and pretty.” She also alleged receiving unwanted medical and psychiatric care while under conservatorship.

Following her remarks, her first public comments about it, Jamie’s lawyer said in a statement to the court that the star’s father “is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain. Mr. Spears loves his daughter and misses her very much.”

The attorney has previously said Jamie believes ever decision he’s made has been in Britney’s “best interest.”

In 2019, Jodi Montgomery was made the singer’s temporary conservator of her person, or manager of her personal and medical affairs, after Jamie stepped aside from such duties due to his own health issues. This past March, Britney’s court-appointed attorney, Sam Inghamfiled papers requesting that Jodi replace Jamie in the role permanently.

Jodi’s lawyer said in a statement to E! News on Wednesday, June 30, “I can state unequivocally that Jodi Montgomery has been a tireless advocate for Britney and for her well-being. While she does not control Britney’s financial assets, she is responsible for her personal care, and if Britney wants any issue brought up to the Court, Ms. Montgomery is and has always been ready, willing, and able to do so. From the very beginning of her appointment in September 2019, Ms. Montgomery and the medical team that she assembled have had one primary goal—to assist and encourage Britney in her path to no longer needing a conservatorship of the person.”

    photos
Lynne Spears’ Bond With Britney Spears

In her court testimony, Britney testified about her physical and mental health treatment, alleging that she was put on psychiatric medication that she “never wanted to be on to begin with.” The singer, a mother of two sons and who is dating Sam Asghari, also told the court she wants to marry again and have a baby but is unable to because she claims “so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor” to take out a birth control IUD that was put inside her body.

In his statement, Jamie reiterated he is not involved in decisions regarding his daughter’s personal or medical affairs, adding, “Unlike Ms. Montgomery and Mr. Ingham, Mr. Spears does not speak or meet with Ms. Spears’ medical team, and he is not permitted to nor does he have the opportunity to provide any input into his daughter’s current medical treatment, diagnosis, or therapy. Nor does Mr. Spears participate in or discuss Ms. Spears’ personal affairs with her, such as issues related to her self-care, marriage, and reproductive desires. These are issues under the purview of Ms. Montgomery as Ms. Spears’ conservator of the person, and issues that Ms. Spears presumably discusses with her court-appointed attorney, Mr. Ingham.”

Watch: What Kevin Federline Wants for Ex Britney Spears

Jodi’s lawyer said in their statement, “As to Britney’s right to marry, that is unaffected by the conservatorship under Probate Code §1900. As to family planning, that is also unaffected by the conservatorship. If Britney needs any assistance with either, Ms. Montgomery has and will be there to provide any assistance needed to Britney. Britney’s choice to marry and to start a family have never been impacted by the conservatorship while Ms. Montgomery has been conservator of the person.”

Jamie noted in his filing that in past years when he was in charge of his daughter’s personal affairs, he “never prevented” her from getting married. While she did not end up walking down the aisle again, Britney was engaged to her former agent Jason Trawick for just over a year until they split in 2013. During their relationship, he briefly served as her co-conservator.

In his March 2021 filing requesting that Jodi be made Britney’s conservator of her personal and medical affairs, Britney’s lawyer cited a 2014 order that determined the pop star had an “incapacity to consent to any form of medical treatment,” CNN reported. In his recent filing, Jamie claimed the attorney “incorrectly” stated that Britney’s alleged incapacity to consent to treatment “was determined by order filed in this matter.” The singer’s father’s petition read, “But there was no such finding and there is no such order.”

    Matt Baron/Shutterstock

Jamie also said in his petition that based on his daughter’s recent court testimony, “it is unclear if she is even aware of and agrees with” the statements made in her lawyer’s request to appoint Jodi, “including specifically that she lacks capacity of give informed consent for her own medical treatment.” Jamie added, “This is something that should also be further investigated by the Court.”

Jodi’s attorney said in Wednesday’s statement, “Since being appointed in September 2019, Ms. Montgomery has tirelessly acted in Britney’s best interests with the approval of her doctors and the oversight of the Court.”

The co-conservator’s lawyer also said, “While it is Ms. Montgomery’s professional duty to be Britney’s protector and advocate, honoring her wishes and seeing to her best interests while Britney is under conservatorship, it is her sincere personal wish that Britney continues to make meaningful progress in her well-being so that her conservatorship of the person can be terminated. Ms. Montgomery looks forward to presenting a comprehensive Care Plan to the Court setting forth a path for termination of the conservatorship for Britney, and Ms. Montgomery looks forward to supporting Britney through that process.”

LiLo Didn’t Want to Be Cady…

When director Mark Waters—who’d directed Lindsay Lohan in Freaky Friday—visited her in Toronto while she was filming Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, he asked her if she wanted to be in his movie, she recalled to Entertainment Weekly in 2014. And she had one role on her mind. “I wanted to play Regina. I had just played—in Confessions and Freaky—not the cool girl in school,” she told the publication. “I was still 17 years old and I wanted to be the cool girl on set.” But between the trouble finding a Cady strong enough to go up against her Regina and the huge success of Freaky Friday, it became clear to the powers-that-be that a change was necessary.

Sherry Lansing, who was heading Paramount at the time, told us, ‘We have to have Lindsay play the lead in Mean Girls. It’s just not going to work having her play the villain, because she now has an audience that won’t accept that,'” Waters told Vulture in 2014, revealing it was up to him to break the bad news to the actress. “Lindsay kind of begrudgingly said, ‘Okay, I guess I’ll play the lead. At least I get to have more lines.'”

    …and Rachel McAdams Did

Before Waters swapped Lohan out of the Regina role, he had several actresses come in and read opposite her as Cady. One of them was 24-year-old Rachel McAdams. “I remember watching her do the scene,” Waters told Vulture, “and after it was over, I told her, ‘I think you’re a movie star, but you’re way too old for this character. You just aren’t going to be able to play the ingenue.’ And she said, ‘No, I understand, I get it.'” When it came time to find a new Regina, however, casting McAdams became a no-brainer. As she told EW, “Mark said, ‘I see Cady a little bit younger, but I think it makes sense if Regina kind of grew up a little too fast.'”

    An Alternate Regina

Before McAdams could be handed the role of Regina, however, she had to sway the director away from another future co-star: Amanda Seyfried. The Mamma Mia! actress was a serious favorite for the villainous lead prior to becoming the delightfully daft Karen. “She tested for Regina and was kind of brilliant, and very different than Rachel’s approach. She played it in a much more ethereal but still kind of scary way. She was more frightening, but oddly, less intimidating,” Waters recalled, before adding that it was producer Lorne Michaels who suggested her for “the dumb girl.”

He continued, “So she came in and read it and nailed it, and we got the best of both worlds.”

A Fight for Tim and Amy

While it seems impossible to imagine Mean Girls without SNL legends Tim Meadows and Amy Poehler in the roles of Mr. Duvall and Mrs. George, respectively, Waters admitted that Paramount was wary. “It’s weird, but Paramount had a nervousness about Saturday Night Live,” he told Vulture. “They’d been burned on some Saturday Night Live movies that had come from Lorne [Michaels], so they didn’t want many Saturday Night Live actors in Mean Girls, because then it might feel like an SNL movie and people might shy away from it.” Meadows, who’d starred in the flop adaptation of The Ladies Man for Paramount, took “a lot of fighting with the studio,” he added.

    An Unlikely Rap Guide

It’s a good thing that Waters got Poehler cast because she wound up being integral in bringing mathlete Kevin Gnapoor’s talent-show rap to life. In fact, Fey left it up to her former Weekend Update co-anchor to pen the bop for actor Rajiv Surendra. “She’ll actually give credit to Amy for this, because Amy is more of the rap person,” Waters revealed. “Amy definitely coached him on how to do the rap, and she actually gave him some of the moves and choreography for it.” If you don’t believe it, check out this YouTube video of Poehler from 2004 in which she performs the rap with Fey and Lohan acting as her hype women.

    The Original Title

The name Mean Girls is just so perfectly perfect, but there was a time when the movie was called something else entirely. “Our original title was Homeschooled. We were going to make it about someone who’s been home-schooled their whole lives and then has to navigate high school,” Waters told The New York Times in 2014. Luckily, a shift in the overall idea brought about a change in name. “Then we came up with the Africa concept,” he continued, “which was a real boon because we could compare the kids’ behavior to animals.”

    The Original Rating

When Paramount handed Mean Girls over to the MPAA for the ratings board, they tried to slap the teen comedy with an R rating, if you can believe it. And the studio had to fight back to ensure that the intended audience for the movie could actually go out and see it. “Even in the PG-13 movie, we had to take a lot of things out,” Fey told Variety in 2018. “I remember thinking, If this was a movie about a boys’ school, ‘Is your cherry popped?’ wouldn’t have to come out.” That line was replaced with the much tamer “Is your muffin buttered?” Not everything was a concession on the filmmakers’ end, however.

“The line in the sand that I drew was the joke about the wide-set vagina. The ratings board said, ‘We can’t give you a PG-13 unless you cut that line.’ We ended up playing the card that the ratings board was sexist, because Anchorman had just come out, and Ron Burgundy had an erection in one scene, and that was PG-13,” Waters told Vulture. “We told them, ‘You’re only saying this because it’s a girl, and she’s talking about a part of her anatomy. There’s no sexual context whatsoever, and to say this is restrictive to an audience of girls is demeaning to all women.’ And they eventually had to back down.”

    An Alternate Aaron

While it was Jonathan Bennett who was lucky enough to ask Lohan what day it was—October 3!—there were a few other contenders for the Aaron Samuels role. In a 2014 interview with Cosmopolitan, Daniel Franzese (who played Damian) revealed that the part originally belonged to a recognizable actor who got himself fired at the table read. “This other actor hadn’t shaved and he didn’t take his hat off; he was playing it really cool,” Franzese said, afraid to ID the actor and embarrass him. “People kept coming over to him like, ‘You know, you should really take your hat off.’ And then, right after the table read, he got fired and they called Jonathan Bennett, who I guess was their second choice.”

And that’s not all Franzese spilled. “Also, Lindsay recently told me that, even before [the actor who got fired], James Franco was considered for the role of Aaron Samuels,” he added. “I thought that was so cool—Bennett was great but that would’ve been cool.”

    The Fallon Connection

While Bennett may not have been the first choice for Aaron, the actor contends that he got the gig because he bore a striking resemblance to Fey’s former Weekend Update co-anchor Jimmy Fallon. As he told Huffington Post in 2015, “She said that’s exactly 100 percent true.”

    Tina’s Math Troubles

Aside from writing the movie’s killer script, Fey also starred in Mean Girls as math teacher and Mathletes advisor Ms. Norbury. But as she told it, when it came to the math jargon she scripted for herself to say, she had no idea what she was talking about. “It was an attempt on my part to counteract the stereotype that girls can’t do math. Even though I did not understand a word I was saying,” she told the NYT back in 2004 before revealing exactly how she made those moments in the script make sense. “My friend’s boyfriend is a calculus teacher in the Bronx. I took his lesson plans.”

    The Real Glen Cocco

As Fey explained to Entertainment Weekly in 2014, “I tried to use real names in writing because it’s just easier.” Case in point? The addressed-but-hardly seen Glen Cocco, named after her older brother’s good friend. “He’s a film editor in Los Angeles, and I imagine it’s a pain in the butt for him,” she explained to the publication. “Someone said to me you could buy a shirt at Target that says ‘You go, Glenn Cocco!’ That was unexpected.”

Other characters named after real people? Lizzy Caplan‘s Janis Ian, named after the musician who was one of the earliest musical guests on SNL, and Damian, named after Fey’s high school BFF—and current TV Guide writer—Damian Holbrook. Cady, meanwhile, was named after Fey’s college roommate Cady Garey

    The Source Material

Mean Girls is based on Rosalind Wiseman‘s parenting book Queen Bees and Wannabees: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, and Other Realities of Adolescence, and, since it has no fictional narrative to adapt, Fey was free to draw from her own high school experiences to create a plot while staying true to what Wiseman’s book. And the author has remained enthusiastic about Fey’s interpretation of her work, except for one minor thing. “I do not do trust falls, I have never done trust falls, I will never do trust falls,” she told The Atlantic in 2014. “I just remember when I saw it the first time being like, ‘Tina, I do not do that.'”

How to Get a Dog to Bite

Remember that scene where Poehler’s Mrs. George is holding her dog, oblivious to the fact that it’s gnawing on her breast implant? Here’s how they accomplished that. “They, like, pinned a piece of a cocktail wiener into her bra,” McAdams told EW. “I thought this dog was going to tear her apart. It was very effective. She was such a pro through it. She’s trying to do her lines and being so professional, and this dog is chomping on her fake boob. I’ll never forget that.”

    Damian’s Deleted Scene

According to Franzese, the original script contained a scene for Damian that was cut before it was even filmed. “The original ending shows what happened to Damian after [junior year], and he was going to audition for American Idol. Simon Cowell was going to call him chubby and then he was going to run up on the stage and punch him,” he told Cosmo. As the actor told the magazine, there were a lot of revisions to the original ending, including a bit where Ms. Norbury busts Kevin G for selling ecstasy, so when she’s investigated for being a drug pusher, there are actual drugs in her desk.

“Janis and Damian convince Kevin G. to go to the school board when they discuss her punishment to confess that it was him, but Kevin G never shows up,” he continued. “So Damian gets on the podium and kind of bulls–ts his way through saying it was him to try to protect Miss Norbury.”

    What Could’ve Been

Fey famously never considered writing a sequel to the hit film, a decision she’s gone on record as regretting now. “At the time we did want to start the conversation about the sequel, and for whatever reason I was like, ‘No!!! We shouldn’t do that!'” she told EW in 2014. “Now I look back and I’m like, ‘Why?’ But now, no—it’s too late now.” As she told Variety in 2018, however, “Maybe it’s better, because we can save all the energy for this.” This being the Mean Girls musical she wrote with husband and 30 Rock composer Jeff Richmond that premiered in Washington D.C in 2017 before opening on Broadway in April 2018. Nominated for 12 Tony Awards and nine Drama Desk Awards that year, Fey won Outstanding Book of a Musical at the latter.

And while there’s been no sequel ever made, there has been a film produced bearing the moniker Mean Girls 2. The made-for-TV “sequel” aired on ABC Family (now Freeform) in 2011 and was a stand-alone story that had nothing to do with the original film aside from having Tim Meadows reprise his role as the school’s principal. It was not well-received.
