The most recent attempt by Britney Spears‘ team to remove her father from her conservatorship has proven unsuccessful.

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge denied a request from the pop star’s lawyer, Samuel D. Ingham III, to have Jamie Spears dropped as his daughter’s co-conservator, as stated in the court order obtained by E! News that the judge signed on Wednesday, June 30.

Jamie was named co-conservator of Britney’s estate and person in 2008, with wealth-management firm Bessemer Trust Company joining him last year as co-conservator of the estate.

“The conservator’s request to suspend James P. Spears immediately upon the appointment of Bessemer Trust Company of California, N.A. as sole conservator of estate is denied without prejudice,” the document read.

This decision follows Britney’s impassioned public testimony at the court hearing about her conservatorship on Wednesday, June 23. During her remarks, the 39-year-old “If U Seek Amy” singer was highly critical of her father and alleged that he “loved the control to hurt his own daughter.”

At the time, Jamie’s attorney issued a statement that read, “Mr. Spears is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain. Mr. Spears loves his daughter and misses her very much.”

Back on Nov. 10, 2020, the court declined a previous request from Britney’s legal team to suspend Jamie, 68, as conservator of her estate. At that time, the judge also decided Jamie would be joined by Bessemer Trust Company as co-conservator.

On Tuesday, June 29, Jamie filed a petition that has been obtained by E! News and called for an investigation into Britney’s allegations of mistreatment against her conservatorship. In the document, Jamie noted that he has not managed his daughter’s personal or medical affairs for the past two years.

Britney Spears' BrotherinLaw Jamie Watson Defends Her Family After Conservatorship Testimony

Britney Spears' BrotherinLaw Jamie Watson Defends Her Family After Conservatorship Testimony

  • Find out what Jamie Lynn Spears' husband Jamie Watson said about Britney Spears' family after the singer's public statement about her conservatorship.
  • Britney Spears‘ brother-in-law Jamie Watson, husband of Jamie Lynn Spears, is defending the sisters’ family while showing support for the singer after she spoke negatively about her 13-year conservatorship at a court hearing.

Britney’s comments on Wednesday, June 25, marked her first public statement about the arrangement since it was put in place in 2008 after she received psychiatric treatment. Her comments, made by phone, come amid her court battle to remove her and Jamie-Lynn’s father Jamie Spears as joint conservator of her financial and medical affairs.

“I can assure you her family loves her and wants the best for her,” Jamie Lynn’s husband told The New York Post on Friday, June 25. “I wouldn’t be around people who weren’t. Who wouldn’t want to be in support of Britney?”

At the hearing, the singer accused her dad of being controlling, called the conservatorship “abusive” and “stupid” and requested that it end without her being evaluated by a therapist.

Britney’s father responded to the singer’s comments at Wednesday’s court hearing through a statement read by his attorney, which said, “Mr. Spears is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain. Mr. Spears loves his daughter and misses her very much.”

While Britney’s brother-in-law has commented on her statement, Jamie Lynn herself has not. However, last year, the Zoey 101 alum responded to a user who wanted her to comment about her sister’s mental health, “You have no right to assume anything about my sister, and I have NO right to speak about HER health and personal matters. She is a strong, badass, unstoppable woman, and that’s the only thing that is OBVIOUS.”

At Wednesday’s court hearing, Britney said she wanted to be able to meet with a therapist once a week at most, and at her own home to maintain privacy. The singer has in the past undergone mental health treatment both at her house and at clinics. At the hearing, Britney also described what she said was a phone call with her father about a past treatment plan for her.

“‘I’m sorry, Brittany, you have to listen to your doctors. They are planning to send you to a small home in Beverly Hills to do a small rehab program that we’re going to make up for you. You’re going to pay $60,000 a month for this.’ I cried on the phone for an hour and he loved every minute of it,” she said. “The control he had over someone as powerful as me as he loved to control to hurt his own daughter and 100,000%. He loved it.”

She also said in her statement, “My precious body has worked for my dad for the past f–king 13 years, trying to be so good and pretty. So perfect because he works me so hard when I do everything I’m told.”

Britney also spoke during her testimony about the alleged restrictions on her personal life under conservatorship and made another accusation: She claimed she was prohibited from removing an intrauterine device for birth control that was placed in her body.

“I want to be able to get married and have a baby,” said the singer, a mother of two sons from a previous marriage and who is currently dating Sam Asghari. “I was told right now on the conservatorship. I’m not able to get married or have a baby. I have a [IUD] inside of myself right now so I don’t get pregnant. I wanted to take the [IUD] out so I could start trying to have another baby. But this so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don’t want me to have any children, any more children.”

Britney added, “Basically, this conservatorship is doing me way more harm than good. I deserve to have a life.”

Meanwhile, an attorney for Britney and Jamie Lynn’s mom, Lynne Spears, said the 66-year-old matriarch, who is not a conservator, is a “very concerned mother” after hearing the singer speak to the court. The attorney, who was present during the hearing, also encouraged the judge to listen to Britney’s request to hire her own private lawyer and to change her care plan.

“I first want to say that was very courageous of Ms. Spears,” Lynne’s attorney said during the court proceedings. “One thing I want to raise with the court… is when she was there in May 2019 that she didn’t feel like she was heard. I feel we need to make sure today that she was heard.”

Jamie Spears Acknowledges Britney’s “Suffering” After Bombshell Conservatorship Testimony

  • Jamie Spears' attorney said he is "sorry to see his daughter suffering" in the midst of their conservatorship court battle. Britney Spears testified that the set-up is "abusive" and controlling.

Jamie Spears understands that his daughter is “suffering,” according to a statement his lawyer read in court on Wednesday, June 23.

Britney Spears testified during the public hearing that her conservatorship is “abusive,” saying she wants it to end

“Nothing has been done to this generation for doing wrong things, but my precious body, who has worked for my dad for the past f–king 13 years, trying to be so good and pretty, so good,” she told the judge, per NBC News. “I’m told the state of California allowed my ignorant father to take his own daughter—who only has a role with me if I work with him—they sat back and allowed him to do that to me? That’s given these people I’ve worked for way too much control.”

After her explosive testimony, Jamie’s attorney read a statement on his behalf at the hearing. It read, “Mr. Spears is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain. Mr. Spears loves his daughter and misses her very much.”

Just a few months ago, Jamie’s attorney, Vivian Thoreen, spoke on Good Morning America about how he had “saved” the Grammy winner.

“I understand that every story needs a villain, but people have it so wrong here,” the lawyer said on TV in February. “This is a story about a fiercely loving, dedicated and loyal father who rescued his daughter from a life-threatening situation. People were harming her, and they were exploiting her. Jamie saved Britney’s life.”

Yet, last November, Britney’s attorney argued that she was afraid of her dad and would not perform her hit songs, as long as he is a conservator her estate. At the time, a judge added the Bessemer Trust Company as a co-conservator while keeping Jamie on board.

Britney spoke for herself this week, testifying that her conservators will not allow her to remove her birth control, even though she wants “the real deal” of marriage and another baby.

She also asked the judge to have her therapist come to her house, instead of forcing her to leave her home. “In the meantime, I want this therapist to come to my home…I’m not willing to go to Westlake and be embarrassed by all these paparazzi,” she shared.

She has been in the conservatorship since 2008, explaining at the hearing that her family has “lived” off the legal arrangement for 13 years. “It’s not fair they’re telling lies about me openly,” she said of her family members doing press interviews.

“I’ve lied and told the whole world ‘I’m OK. And I’m happy.’ It’s a lie. I thought I just maybe [have] said that enough. Because I’ve been in denial. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatized,” the singer added, per a transcription of Britney’s testimony published by Variety

Jamie’s legal team has previously claimed that she’s able to end the conservatorship.

“Any time Britney wants to end her conservatorship, she can ask her lawyer to file a petition to terminate it; she has always had this right but in 13 years has never exercised it,” Vivian Thoreen said in a statement to People in March. “Britney knows that her Daddy loves her, and that he will be there for her whenever and if she needs him, just as he always has been—conservatorship or not.”
