Gigi Hadid has a lot to offer her and Zayn Malik‘s daughter Khai.

The 26-year-old model has a wealth of experience and knowledge, which she has gained from walking the runways and traveling the globe over the years. And as she savors the new chapter in her life, the mom is already thinking about the lessons she’ll teach her baby girl, like her family’s belief that less is more. 

“I think I’ll teach Khai to keep it simple when it comes to makeup, like my mom [Yolanda Hadid] taught me,” Gigi tells Harper’s Bazaar, adding “there’s a few” more tips she will “for sure” pass on to her little one. 

Gigi shares that her model mother was relatively hands off when it came to her beauty routine, explaining, “My mom never really gave me advice on, like, what to do with my skincare or makeup, but I definitely watched her enough to learn.”

“She had a very simple, natural take on skincare. She didn’t overdo it with product, and I feel like I’ve taken that on, where I think less is more,” the star says. “Doing too much for my skin or beauty routine can make it more complicated, and sometimes my skin can’t handle it.”

But simplicity doesn’t equate to monotony. The model, who appears in a commercial for Ralph Lauren’s new fragrance Ralph’s Club, says she changes her beauty and fragrance routine based on her mood, saying, “I have certain ones that I always go back to, but I’m definitely open to try new ones. But also during the day, I tend to wear lighter fragrances or mix. Then at night is when I like to bring out the stronger, deeper, more complex scents.”

When Gigi is on “mom duty full-time,” she says she keeps her routine to “the necessities,” which includes face wash, moisturizer, lotion and a spritz of perfume. 

She admits motherhood is different from what she’s used to, but it’s entirely worth it. “It’s all my favorite, even if it gets hard at times. You have so much patience and unconditional love that comes with motherhood,” Gigi shares. “It’s just fun to watch her grow and learn every day. And she makes me so proud. It’s funny how even the smallest things are exciting.”

“Happy Birthday Baby @anwarspc,” Dua started her caption. “Another lap around the sun ~ you make my world so much better!! I’m lucky to love you and be loved by you. DEXTER IS SO LUCKY TOO N LOVES U SO MUCH!!! can’t wait to celebrate youuuu today.”

In the first photo Dua posted, she leaned on Anwar while he was shirtless for a selfie. Another pic showed her hugging him from behind. Later on in the gallery, she pinched his cheek while he was driving. One pic was especially intimate, showing Dua holding Anwar’s hand in bed.

Zayn Malik is feeling the Father’s Day love.

To mark the special holiday on Sunday, June 20, Gigi Hadid took to Instagram to celebrate the former One Direction member and their 9-month-old daughter, Khai, who they welcomed in September 2020.

“Our Khai is so lucky to have a baba who loves her so much & does anything to see her smile!!” the supermodel began her caption. “@zayn Happy first Father’s Day.. I’m so grateful for all the lil bits of her that are you. We love you so much.”

Along with her heartwarming message, the 26-year-old star shared a rare photo of Zayn holding up their little one, as she looked in awe at a lit-up globe.

While the British star has yet to post anything about his first Father’s Day celebration, he did open up about becoming a parent when speaking on iHeartRadio’s Valentine in the Morning in March.

“Honestly, it’s amazing,” Zayn shared about fatherhood. “A lot of people that I was speaking to, obviously, before she was born and stuff were like, ‘It’s a big adjustment, and it’s going to be a massive change and stuff.’ But honestly, she’s an amazing baby. It’s been really easy for me and G to kind of just ease into it.”

He added, “She kind of made it easy for us, she sleeps really well, she loves her milk. It’s just feeding and changing diapers at the moment. It’s wicked. I’m enjoying it, for sure.”

However, the new dad admitted that he didn’t expect to love parenthood so much.

“I had time for my relationship and stuff too, but it was still solely about me,” he explained. “The fact that [Khai] has been so easy to kind of just adjust to has been surprising to me because I just love spending my days with her, hanging out with her, just doing really relaxing chill stuff. Just watching kid shows on TV, on Netflix, learning nursery rhymes, just rolling around with her and just singing to her. It’s a really different pace of life, but it’s been really easy to adjust to it, for sure. I think that’s the most surprising thing.”

He also gushed over Gigi’s motherhood journey, saying, “She’s good. She’s a wicked mom. Obviously, she’s really a big help with everything, and she’s doing well.”

It was just last month that Gigi marked her first Mother’s Day.

“The rumors are true: my best friend, purpose, muse, greatest pride & joy,” she wrote on Instagram in May. “I feel so lucky and inspired bein your mama, my Khai!! An old soul full of sunshine, you light up everyone’s days! Thank you thank you thank you.”

E!: Talk to me about your practice in NYC and why you created a skincare line.

LD: Well, as you know I’m a plastic surgeon, based in New York City and in my day-to-day work and my medical practice, I want to be able to deliver my patients, effective medical grade, easy and beautiful solutions, and so this line was really born out of that desire to marry science and beauty.

So, you know, in my practice I do everything from skin treatments like lasers and peels to minimally invasive treatments like Botox and fillers and even full plastic surgical procedures like facelifts and breast augmentations. But I think one missing piece of the puzzle for many people is an effective skincare routine. And I think of at-home skincare products as almost like the equivalent of a daily self-care moment that can help you not only have beautiful glowing skin but also have healthier skin that reflects your, you know, confidence and allows you to put your best face forward.

E!: One of your mantras is ‘subtle is the new dramatic.’ Can you tell me more about that and how it may relate to some misconceptions about plastic surgery or just the beauty industry in general?

LD: Absolutely, I think that plastic surgery has been treated in the media, in a way that is exaggerated and doesn’t really reflect the beautiful nuanced  work that is possible. And when I started my private practice in plastic surgery, my goal was to normalize subtle and beautiful results. I think there are so many people out there who want to change one little thing or make some small adjustments or optimize the way they look, but they’re truly afraid of looking like a different person. So I would say that the main focus of my work is trying to tread the delicate line between identity and beauty. How do we keep someone looking like themselves, but a little bit better? And that’s why I think the subtle is the new dramatic.

E!: Do you think you’re able to get something dramatic like a nose job and still maintain your actual face?

LD: 100%. This very niche thin slice of plastic surgery was born out of some of my higher profile and celebrity clientele who wanted to keep booking the same gigs and not have to redo their headshots and all of that but they still wanted to look better.

E!: What question are you asked the most often by clients, and I’m curious as to what your celebrity clients ask for as well.

LD: The thing I think everybody’s biggest concern is, “Is it going to look fake?” And I think that’s the number one biggest misconception about plastic surgery. I think people want to know what I see, so the most frequently asked question I have in my day-to-day life is ‘What would you do? What’s your impression?’

Choosing a plastic surgeon is almost like choosing an artist that you’re commissioning to make a very beautiful and very high stakes painting for you, and you know you want it to be great. You want it to be amazing. E!: I want to talk to you about your skincare because you have several products and they’re amazing. What are some common skincare ingredients that we should try to avoid, and then I also want to talk to you about ingredients that we should add in our routine.
LD: I think, generally speaking, you want to try to avoid ingredients that have a lot of unnecessary additives and preservatives. But generally speaking, everybody’s skin type is a little bit different so there are some ingredients that work better for some people and others that work better for others.

I think the most essential components of a skincare regimen, are a mixed molecular weight hyaluronic acid serum, like ours, Vitamin C+B+E Ferulic Serum. and a retinol bakuchiol. Those three categories, hyaluronic, vitamin C and retinol are truly skin changing, and can really transform a complexion.

I think it’s very important to mention that people should be using zinc and titanium based SPF products. And then you can also think about how to help maintain the skin so a physical exfoliant like a microdermabrasion scrub or a chemical exfoliant like alpha and beta hydroxy acid pads can be really nice as well. I love our peptide-based eye cream and niacinamide.

E!: What are your storage tips on how to get the optimal use out of your Vitamin C serum? It can often oxidize too quickly.
LD: Our Vitamin C serum is formed stable at normal room temperature so I would keep it out of extreme heat, or extreme freezing. Some people like to use a mini skincare fridge which is, you know, fun, and can create a little spa feeling but it’s not required. The most important thing with a vitamin C serum is to make sure that it’s in an opaque or translucent bottle so light is not entering the bottle, and also that you’re closing it tightly so that it doesn’t oxidize.

E!: What is the most common procedure that you are doing with your celebrities patients?
LD: So I have this concept of facial optimization that I’ve popularized and kind of really authored. Facial optimization is basically why I’m seeing every celebrity client. Facial optimization is a combination of surgical and non-surgical procedures that are designed to preserve your natural beauty and facial identity, but kind of enhance it a little bit.

I’ll give you some more specific examples. From a non surgical standpoint, I use injectables to create a more contoured appearing face to improve the shape and angle of the nose to create more vertical height of the lip, and to also improve the balance of the profile. And then I can use surgical techniques to augment that by, for example, I do a lot of blepharoplasty surgery, which is eyelid surgery.

Everybody who’s trying to stay looking the same age from 20 to 60 is intervening in many small ways over time in order to in order to do that. From a surgery standpoint, it can be things like segmental liposuction, buccal fat pad excision, lip lift, eyelid surgery, facelift, neck lift, and then obviously I can’t mention names but many, many of the most photographed fashion breasts, like, very, very super small and beautiful breast implants.

E!: In 2014 You wrote a piece in honor of International Women’s Day, and you touched upon you know the struggles of being a young female doctor who was also a minority. Obviously there’s still work to do but I’m curious, has your perspective changed in the last seven years?

LD: I think that we’re making progress, every day, and I take my work very seriously, and what I hope to do is inspire other young people, regardless of their background, to pursue their dream and enter into fields that may not necessarily represent them today, because you never know what will happen in the future.

It’s important for people to try to always do their best work. Always stay true to their principles. And then always think about expanding their horizons like don’t let my advice to young people who are kind of thinking about this very challenging year everyone’s been through and kind of a difficult charged social and political time is, you know, boundaries were made to be broken. And we’re changing and improving every single day. And I feel very optimistic. I think they’re, they’re all we all have battles that we face, and fight every single day. But, I think the future is bright.

In a new interview, Gigi Hadid, whose father is Palestinian and whose mother is Dutch, talks about her heritage and parenting daughter Khai with Zayn Malik.

It’s been less than a year since Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik welcomed their daughter Khai. But the new parents already have a clear vision for how they want to raise their firstborn, including teaching her about their heritages.

“We think about it and talk about it a lot as partners and it’s something that’s really important to us, but it’s also something that we first experienced ourselves,” the supermodel told i-D for The New Worldwi-De Issue. “Because both of our parents are their own heritage. We are that first generation of those mixed races, and then that comes with that first generational experience of being like, ‘Oh damn, I’m the bridge!’ That’s not something that my parents experienced or that they can really help me through. It’s something I’ve always thought about my whole life.” 

Gigi’s father, Mohamed Hadid, is Palestinian, and her mother, Yolanda Hadid is Dutch. Zayn’s father, Yaser Malik, is British-Pakistani, and the One Direction alum’s mother, Trisha Malik, is English and of Irish descent.

“In certain situations, I feel–or I’m made to feel–that I’m too white to stand up for part of my Arab heritage,” Gigi continued. “You go through life trying to figure out where you fit in racially. Is what I am, or what I have, enough to do what I feel is right? But then, also, is that taking advantage of the privilege of having the whiteness within me, right? Am I allowed to speak for this side of me, or is that speaking on something that I don’t experience enough to know?”

Ultimately, Gigi predicts Khai “will grow up feeling out the way that she can or wants to be a bridge for her different ethnicities.”

“But I think that it will be nice to be able to have those conversations, and see where she comes from [with] it, without us putting that onto her,” she continued. “What comes from her is what I’m most excited about, and being able to add to that or answer her questions, you know?”

Gigi has spoken about her heritage before, including after she covered Vogue Arabia in 2017. “When I shot the cover of Vogue Arabia, I wasn’t ‘Arab enough’ to be representing those girls, even though I’m half-Palestinian,” she said during a 2018 Reebok appearance in Sydney, per Yahoo!. “I’m as Palestinian as I am Dutch. Just because I have blonde hair, I still carry the value of my ancestors and I appreciate and respect that.” 

Gigi and Zayn welcomed Khai, whose name means “the chosen one” in Arabic, last September. And in a February interview with Vogue, the runway star shared how the grandparents’ nicknames reflect their backgrounds. According to the magazine, Khai will call Mohamed Jido and Yolanda Oma. Similarly, the little one will refer to Yaser as Abu and Trisha as Nini.

During her talk with Vogue, Gigi spoke about how she and Zayn also plan to teach Khai about different religions.

“My dad’s Muslim, and my mom grew up celebrating Christmas,” she shared. “I felt like I was allowed to learn about every religion when I was a kid. I think it’s good to take different pieces of different religions that you connect with, and I think that’s how we’ll do that.”
