The New Faces of Pride: TikTok Stars Chris & Ian Share the Kind of Love Story They Want to See More Of

The New Faces of Pride: TikTok Stars Chris & Ian Share the Kind of Love Story They Want to See More Of

  • Real-life couple Chris Olsen and Ian Paget found love and then millions of TikTok followers—and it was soon obvious that their appeal translated to the LGBTQ+ community and beyond.

With the world slowly beginning to come out on the other side of the coronavirus pandemic, this Pride season is one of tremendous celebration. And yet, the spirit of a movement itself born out of a protest lives on. As the month of June comes to a close and International Pride Day nears, E! News has asked some of Hollywood’s newest generation of LGBTQ+ stars to share what Pride means to them in 2021.

Welcome to The New Faces of Pride.

Chris Olsen and Ian Paget found love in a hopeless place.

Oh, no, no—not quarantine. We just mean the Internet.

The performers and artists first crossed paths uneventfully on Instagram, Chris—who was living in Maryland—liking a few of Ian’s pics without much of a reaction. Then Ian glimpsed Chris at a WorldPride event in 2019. They didn’t talk then, but Ian was inclined to message Chris the next day. Still, it wasn’t until Chris visited New York that July that they actually met and went on a real first date.

“I like to say that’s our one-year anniversary,” Chris said in their inaugural YouTube video after amassing millions of followers on TikTok. “It’s not, because [Ian] did not agree to be my boyfriend until two months into the relationship.”

But they’ve been together ever since, having joined forces both online and off, moving in together in L.A. and becoming one of the most adored social-media-star couples, their popularity quickly transcending the gay fandom they had guessed they’d attract to encompass people of all ages, lifestyles and identities.

“We’re going to make the most of it and enjoy doing what we do,” Ian told the Associated Press in October.

At the same time, Chris told Bethesda Magazine in December, “We’re gay rights advocates in the way of just showing ourselves. You are forced to see us and personalize us.”

Musing on the couple’s reach, Chris—who edged out Ian for People‘s Sexiest Guy on TikTok recognition last year—explained, “We’re a gay couple, but we’re not really commenting on the fact that we’re gay. Maybe some gay child in Kansas who hasn’t come out yet and has never met a gay person is seeing two gay people interact, but not in a way that comments on their gayness, so you’re just seeing that it’s OK.”

After what’s been a whirlwind couple of years of love, newfound success and the trials and tribulations that came with the coronavirus pandemic and navigating life—not to mention their partnership—in the public eye, Chris and Ian shared their thoughts on Pride, acceptance, LGBTQ+ representation in the media and the sorts of stories they want to see more of onscreen. (And though they mean scripted, their real-life story is a heartwarming addition to the canon.)

How has your personal definition of Pride changed or shifted after all we’ve been through these last few months?

Chris Olsen: I think Pride has always been about holding space for and supporting fellow LGBTQ+ members and ourselves, however this year shifted just HOW we were able to do that. We weren’t able to support and love each other in person last year, which I think only made everyone look forward to and cherish the time that we would be able to in the future. So while the definition of pride hasn’t changed, the importance of it has heightened.

Ian Paget: Now more than ever, Pride to me means freedom: Freedom of expression. Freedom to celebrate just BEING. This year I define my pride as: Loving myself fully and by honoring those who came before us. And working to make sure that ALL my LGBTQ+ family feels safe and loved to do the same.

What queer media, be it books, music or film/TV, is a mainstay in your life? Why?

Chris: I continue to search for the representation in media that I can feel the most connected to, and I still think there is a lot of work to do in that regard, especially throughout mainstream media.

Ian: Books: The Velvet Rage. This book was like a Queer Life 101 course on remembering that we are enough and helped me tremendously with understanding the beautiful intricacies of life as a gay man. And Mating In Captivity by Esther Perel. Film/TV: Veneno this year on HBO Max. Some of the most beautiful storytelling and performances to grace my TV. A must-watch.

Remember These LGBTQ Firsts on TV?

What was the first time you saw yourself reflected in entertainment in a way that filled you with pride? And if you’re still waiting, what is it that you’re hoping to see?

Chris: I would say my experience with the movie Call Me By Your Name has changed over the past few months, but I am hoping to see more gay love stories where the love isn’t centered around a tough coming-out story or feeling like what is happening is “wrong.”

Ian: Seeing the original company of Wicked on Broadway! One of the dancers, Andy Pellick (who later became a friend), was a huge inspiration to me. To see someone dance the way he did and featured the way he was made me want to be that. He was LIVING!

You finally get to meet your queer hero. Who are they? And after “Thank you” and “I love you,” what’s the next thing you tell them?

Chris: Lady Gaga. My mom and I went to her concert when I was really young and I remember it was the first time I had seen so many queer people gathered in one space. The way she fiercely showed love to the community inspired me to want to be myself and come out while attending my religious all-boys school. I would tell her to immediately tell me how she wrote such a masterpiece of an album at 21.

Ian: Elton John. And after “thank you” and “I love you” I’d say, “Wanna sing a song together?”

You are given the keys to your industry. What’s the first thing you do to make it a more inclusive environment for everyone?

Chris: For every straight love story that comes out, two gay love stories need to come out with it. There is SO much heteronormative storytelling, not only do we need more GAY love stories, we need more TRANS love stories, we need more LESBIAN love stories, we need all of the above.

Ian: I’d look to those in the industry who are most dissatisfied with the way things are and put them in positions of power. Rethinking depends on a challenge network: a group of people we trust to point out or blind spots and help us overcome our weaknesses. I’d entrust them to push us to be humble about our expertise, doubt our knowledge and be curious about new perspectives and narratives. Put people in power who fearlessly question the way things have been done and aim to hold us accountable for our past and future actions.

What is your message to future generations of queer people, coming of age right now? How do you want to instill hope in them?

Chris: YOU deserve a love story that’s as beautiful as any straight love story out there, and you will find it. Just continue being yourself loudly and proudly!

Ian: My message to my beautiful queer people is you are enough. You will face some fear and even if you’re struggling to believe it, taking a leap is how you conquer that fear. Participate in the world: Create, connect and contribute! To quote Lady Gaga: “Baby, you were born this way!” So own it!

Cher Just Made Her TikTok Debut and You Better Believe It Was Iconic

Cher Just Made Her TikTok Debut and You Better Believe It Was Iconic

  • If you thought TikTok was missing something, say no more—because Cher is officially on it. Keep scrolling to see the pop legend's one-of-a-kind debut.
  • Watch: Alicia Silverstone’s Iconic “Clueless” TikTok With Son Bear Blu

When you’re Cher, no introduction is necessary.

Still, to commemorate her official TikTok account, the pop legend did fans the honor of posting her first video—and as you could have guessed, it was just as iconic as she is. First of all, she gave fans not one, but two outfits, complete with alternating blond and brunette wigs.

But, her ensemble wasn’t the only thing she couldn’t decide on—introducing herself proved to be a bit tricky, too.

“Hi, it’s me, the great and powerful Cher and I’m on TikTok,” she declared in the first take.

The second went like, “Hi, it’s me, Cher, on TikTok.”

“Guess who I am,” she said in a third, forgoing her name entirely. “I’m on TikTok.”

The Oscar winner concluded with, “Hi, of course you know who I am. I was gonna introduce myself, but no.”

However, Cher’s message wasn’t only about herself. “Happy Pride Month to everybody in the community that I love,” she signed off, “and that means you.”

With TikTok emerging as a major social media platform, it seems Hollywood’s most beloved stars are flocking there—with exactly the type of content the fans want.

In early June, Alicia Silverstone, who played another beloved Cher, also made her debut on the app, along with a truly perfect recreation of her “Ew! Get off of me! Ugh! As if!” scene from Clueless 26 years later. The cherry on top? She reenacted it with her son, 10-year-old Bear Blu Jarecki

And yes, we’re still totally buggin’.

Avril Lavigne Proves She Hasn't Aged in TikTok Debut With "Sk8er Boi" Tony Hawk

Avril Lavigne Proves She Hasn't Aged in TikTok Debut With "Sk8er Boi" Tony Hawk

  • It's not complicated: Avril Lavigne just won TikTok with her "Sk8er Boi" video, featuring Tony Hawk. As one fan put it, "This is the collab we all wanted in middle school."
  • Watch: Avril Lavigne Went to Billie Eilish’s 18th Birthday

TikTok wasn’t good enough for her… until now!

Avril Lavigne just made her TikTok debut, and it was well worth the wait.

The singer, now 36 but perfectly ageless, lip-synced to her own hit song “Sk8er Boi” in her first video on the platform, seemingly filmed from her beachside home in Malibu, Calif. Avril wore a red-and-blue striped tie, graphic tee and pair of black shorts as she rocked our world.

Naturally, her signature blonde hair was down and her nails were coated in black polish straight out of our pop punk dreams.

Before the chorus, she passed the metaphorical baton to none other than real life skater boy, Tony Hawk, who donned her tie as he took a dive down a skate ramp on his pink board.

Avril captioned her clip (which unlocked so many childhood memories), “He was a… @tonyhawk #GoSkateboarding.”

The 1.8 million people that liked the video were instantly brought back to 2002, when the song debuted. One wrote, “what in the 2003 is this???” and another fan added, “This is the collab we all wanted in middle school.”

But many of the comments noted the obvious about her appearance. As one put it, “Girl hasn’t aged since 2000 [skull emoji].” Others asked for her beauty secrets, with one fan calling her a “non-aging vampire.”

“SHE LOOKS THE SAME WHAT,” joked one social media user.

Maybe the secret to her fountain of youth is the company she keeps. Avril—who double dated with Megan Fox, Machine Gun Kelly and Mod Sun in March—scored the exclusive invite to Billie Eilish‘s 18th birthday party last year.

“She invited me to her 18th birthday and it was fun! Her mom made a cake and it was sweet—no pun intended,” Avril shared on the HappE! Hour Instagram series in April. “There was just like a piñata and games, just like a small group of her friends and family. Just like a bunch of fun arcade games and stuff.”

Now, all we need is her 2021 rendition of “Complicated,” or maybe a sneak peek at her next album, which is coming soon, so her website promises.

Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Aniston & Bella Hadid Love This TikTok Famous Skincare Line

Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Aniston & Bella Hadid Love This TikTok Famous Skincare Line

  • Renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Lara Devgan shares skincare tips and insights on "subtle" enhancements.
  • E-Comm, Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Aniston, Bella Hadid Getty Images

We interviewed this celebrity because we think you’ll like their picks. Some of the products shown are from the celebrity’s own product line. E! has affiliate relationships, so we may get a commission if you purchase something through our links. Items are sold by the retailer, not E!.

Let’s face it: no one wants an overly-pulled, blatant nip and tuck. It’s 2021 and cosmetic enhancements don’t have to be so obvious, nor do we want them to be. That’s why it’s essential to turn to an expert. Dr. Lara Devgan is one of America’s preeminent plastic surgeons, who helps people achieve a “magical paradox” that she describes as “looking the same… but better.” Isn’t that what most of us are looking for?

Even if you aren’t one of her clients, you can still benefit from her expertise. She has applied that understanding of nuance and subtlety to her skincare line Dr. Lara Devgan Scientific Beauty. Dr. Devgan is not able to comment on any patient care matters, but Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Aniston, and Bella Hadid have posted photos of her skincare products.

Recently, we spoke to Dr. Devgan about running her medical practice in New York City, her personal (and professional) beauty mantra, and, of course, some skincare tips.

    E-comm: Amazon Premium Beauty Brands

E!: Talk to me about your practice in NYC and why you created a skincare line.

LD: Well, as you know I’m a plastic surgeon, based in New York City and in my day-to-day work and my medical practice, I want to be able to deliver my patients, effective medical grade, easy and beautiful solutions, and so this line was really born out of that desire to marry science and beauty.

So, you know, in my practice I do everything from skin treatments like lasers and peels to minimally invasive treatments like Botox and fillers and even full plastic surgical procedures like facelifts and breast augmentations. But I think one missing piece of the puzzle for many people is an effective skincare routine. And I think of at-home skincare products as almost like the equivalent of a daily self-care moment that can help you not only have beautiful glowing skin but also have healthier skin that reflects your, you know, confidence and allows you to put your best face forward.

    Dr. Lara DevganMichael Violago

E!: One of your mantras is ‘subtle is the new dramatic.’ Can you tell me more about that and how it may relate to some misconceptions about plastic surgery or just the beauty industry in general?

LD: Absolutely, I think that plastic surgery has been treated in the media, in a way that is exaggerated and doesn’t really reflect the beautiful nuanced  work that is possible. And when I started my private practice in plastic surgery, my goal was to normalize subtle and beautiful results. I think there are so many people out there who want to change one little thing or make some small adjustments or optimize the way they look, but they’re truly afraid of looking like a different person. So I would say that the main focus of my work is trying to tread the delicate line between identity and beauty. How do we keep someone looking like themselves, but a little bit better? And that’s why I think the subtle is the new dramatic.

Dr. Lara Devgan Scientific Beauty Microdermabrasion Scrub

If you’re concerned about dullness, uneven skin texture, and the appearance of pores, use this microdermabrasion scrub. It’s a non-abrasive exfoliant that addresses those skin concerns, leaving you with a radiant and soft complexion.

E!: Do you think you’re able to get something dramatic like a nose job and still maintain your actual face?

LD: 100%. This very niche thin slice of plastic surgery was born out of some of my higher profile and celebrity clientele who wanted to keep booking the same gigs and not have to redo their headshots and all of that but they still wanted to look better.

E!: What question are you asked the most often by clients, and I’m curious as to what your celebrity clients ask for as well.

LD: The thing I think everybody’s biggest concern is, “Is it going to look fake?” And I think that’s the number one biggest misconception about plastic surgery. I think people want to know what I see, so the most frequently asked question I have in my day-to-day life is ‘What would you do? What’s your impression?’

Choosing a plastic surgeon is almost like choosing an artist that you’re commissioning to make a very beautiful and very high stakes painting for you, and you know you want it to be great. You want it to be amazing. You want it to reflect your tastes and preferences, but you also want a little bit of the artistic and aesthetic judgment of the person that you’re professionally, seeking out.

Dr. Lara Devgan Scientific Beauty Hyaluronic Serum

If your skin could use a boost of hydration, try the Dr. Lara Devgan Scientific Beauty Hyaluronic Serum. It’s effective to increase skin firmness and support natural elastin.

E!: I want to talk to you about your skincare because you have several products and they’re amazing. What are some common skincare ingredients that we should try to avoid, and then I also want to talk to you about ingredients that we should add in our routine.
LD: I think, generally speaking, you want to try to avoid ingredients that have a lot of unnecessary additives and preservatives. But generally speaking, everybody’s skin type is a little bit different so there are some ingredients that work better for some people and others that work better for others.

I think the most essential components of a skincare regimen, are a mixed molecular weight hyaluronic acid serum, like ours, Vitamin C+B+E Ferulic Serum. and a retinol bakuchiol. Those three categories, hyaluronic, vitamin C and retinol are truly skin changing, and can really transform a complexion.

I think it’s very important to mention that people should be using zinc and titanium based SPF products. And then you can also think about how to help maintain the skin so a physical exfoliant like a microdermabrasion scrub or a chemical exfoliant like alpha and beta hydroxy acid pads can be really nice as well. I love our peptide-based eye cream and niacinamide.

E!: What are your storage tips on how to get the optimal use out of your Vitamin C serum? It can often oxidize too quickly.
LD: Our Vitamin C serum is formed stable at normal room temperature so I would keep it out of extreme heat, or extreme freezing. Some people like to use a mini skincare fridge which is, you know, fun, and can create a little spa feeling but it’s not required. The most important thing with a vitamin C serum is to make sure that it’s in an opaque or translucent bottle so light is not entering the bottle, and also that you’re closing it tightly so that it doesn’t oxidize.

Dr. Lara Devgan Scientific Beauty Vitamin C+B+E Ferulic Serum

This lightweight serum reduces the appearance of dark spots and wrinkles, soothes the skin, and provides protection from UV rays.

E!: I want to obviously talk to you about your platinum lip plumper that I’m obsessed with, what was your reaction when you first saw that it was trending on TikTok?
LD: It was so funny I’m still crying. As you know, it’s a clear liquid gloss that’s fortified with niacin mix molecular weight Hyaluronic acid and ceramides. It’s the most feel good little moment of the day to apply Platinum Lip Plump because it gives you all of the emotions of a syringe of lip filler done in the form of a clear liquid gloss. It’s been an amazing product for us. Jennifer Aniston wore it on the cover of InStyle, and that was kind of this amazing moment for us.

Dr. Lara Devgan Scientific Beauty Platinum Lip Plump SPF 30

You will get fuller, more hydrated lips every time you apply this lip plumper. It’s formulated with hyaluronic acid, which diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and it has SPF protection.

E!: And then your second cult-favorite is the Platinum Long Lash Serum. Would you say that you could also use this product if you’ve had a lash lift or lash extensions? Talk to me about how that product works.
LD: So, yes, you can use Platinum Lash with those other things as well. So Platinum Long Lash Serum is our cult favorite eyelash serum. It is based in peptides pro vitamin B derivatives and plant and plant-based phyto peptides. It works by creating and nourishing a healthy growth environment for long beautiful lashes.

Dr. Lara Devgan Scientific Beauty Platinum Long Lash Serum

This lash serum is a cult favorite because it extends the eyelash life cycle and support growth for visibly longer, denser lashes.

E!: What is the most common procedure that you are doing with your celebrities patients?
LD: So I have this concept of facial optimization that I’ve popularized and kind of really authored. Facial optimization is basically why I’m seeing every celebrity client. Facial optimization is a combination of surgical and non-surgical procedures that are designed to preserve your natural beauty and facial identity, but kind of enhance it a little bit.

I’ll give you some more specific examples. From a non surgical standpoint, I use injectables to create a more contoured appearing face to improve the shape and angle of the nose to create more vertical height of the lip, and to also improve the balance of the profile. And then I can use surgical techniques to augment that by, for example, I do a lot of blepharoplasty surgery, which is eyelid surgery.

Everybody who’s trying to stay looking the same age from 20 to 60 is intervening in many small ways over time in order to in order to do that. From a surgery standpoint, it can be things like segmental liposuction, buccal fat pad excision, lip lift, eyelid surgery, facelift, neck lift, and then obviously I can’t mention names but many, many of the most photographed fashion breasts, like, very, very super small and beautiful breast implants.

Dr. Lara Devgan Scientific Beauty Peptide Eye Cream

You can reduce wrinkles while you firm and brighten the skin around the eye area if you use this eye cream twice a day. All it takes is a pea-size amount to address loss of firmness and elasticity and dark circles.

E!: In 2014 You wrote a piece in honor of International Women’s Day, and you touched upon you know the struggles of being a young female doctor who was also a minority. Obviously there’s still work to do but I’m curious, has your perspective changed in the last seven years?

LD: I think that we’re making progress, every day, and I take my work very seriously, and what I hope to do is inspire other young people, regardless of their background, to pursue their dream and enter into fields that may not necessarily represent them today, because you never know what will happen in the future.

It’s important for people to try to always do their best work. Always stay true to their principles. And then always think about expanding their horizons like don’t let my advice to young people who are kind of thinking about this very challenging year everyone’s been through and kind of a difficult charged social and political time is, you know, boundaries were made to be broken. And we’re changing and improving every single day. And I feel very optimistic. I think they’re, they’re all we all have battles that we face, and fight every single day. But, I think the future is bright.
