Former Prison Guard Revisits Inappropriate Relationship With Convicted Child Killer Susan Smith

Former Prison Guard Revisits Inappropriate Relationship With Convicted Child Killer Susan Smith

  • In a sneak peek of Lifetime's Cellmate Secrets: Susan Smith, the cellmates and lover of the convicted murderer recall how manipulative she was and the impact it had on their own lives.
  • In October 1994, Susan Smith called South Carolina police claiming her two sons, 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alex, were kidnapped when a Black man stole her car.

However, after a nine-day search, Susan confessed she was responsible for the deaths of her two boys. According to NBC News, she told investigators she had strapped Michael and Alex into their car seats, before pushing her Mazda into a nearby lake with the kids still inside of it.

Susan was convicted of Michael and Alex’s murders in 1995 and sentenced to life in prison.

She was subsequently taken to the Camille Griffin Graham Correctional Institution and later the Leath Correctional Institution, where she met Afred Rowe, who was one of the two prison guards she had an “inappropriate” relationship with.

In the upcoming Lifetime series Cellmate Secrets: Susan Smith, Alfred and his wife Elizabeth Rowe discuss how their lives were “turned upside down” by his affair with Susan, who is described as “manipulative.”

Alfred confessed to having a sexual relationship with Susan in 2003. Following his admission, the prison guard was sentenced to five years probation.

Additionally, Susan’s former prison cellmates Stephanie Hulsey and Christie Smith discuss the time they served alongside the now-49-year-old inmate. They tell Lifetime they were manipulated into helping Susan carry out sexual affairs with other individuals, and describe how she coerced others into getting her drugs.

According to NBC News, Susan wrote a letter to The State reporter Harrison Cahill in 2015, in which she said, “I am not the monster society thinks I am.”

As Susan told Harrison, she was not in her “right mind” when she killed her two sons, writing, “There was no motive as it was not even a planned event.”

Furthermore, she stated that contrary to prior reports, she did not kill her two boys so she could be with a man, whom told her he didn’t want any children. She said, “The thing that hurts me the most is that people think I hurt my children in order to be with a man… That is so far from the truth.”

Drake Bell pleaded guilty to one count of attempted endangering children, a fourth-degree felony, and one count of disseminating matter harmful to juveniles, a first-degree misdemeanor, on June 23, according to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office in Ohio. He is expected to be sentenced in Cleveland on July 12.

According to the Associated Press, sentencing can range from probation to two years in prison.

While Bell’s attorney Ian Friedman told the news organization he could not comment on the case, he did say it will be revealed “why Mr. Bell chose to enter today’s plea” at the 34-year-old actor’s sentencing.

Bell—who starred on the Nickelodeon program Drake & Josh in the early 2000s and whose legal name is Jared “Drake” Bell—was arrested by the Cleveland Division of Police on June 3 and was charged with both counts. He was released after posting a $2,500 bond and initially pleaded not guilty.

Tyler Sinclair, public information officer of the Cuyahoga Prosecutor’s Office, told E! News a 15-year-old girl filed a report with her local police department in Canada in October 2018 regarding an alleged incident between her and Bell at a Cleveland nightclub in 2017. Sinclair said Canadian authorities contacted the Cleveland Division of Police, who then conducted an investigation.

Sinclair said the investigation revealed the teen had established a relationship with Bell several years prior and attended his concert in December 2017. There, Bell “violated his duty of care,” Sinclair stated, and, as a result, created a risk of harm to her.

In addition, Sinclair said the investigation revealed that Bell sent the teen “inappropriate social media messages” in the months leading up to the concert.

Drake Bell from Drake & Josh has pleaded not guilty after being indicted for a 2017 incident in which he allegedly attempted to endanger an underage teenage girl.

The 34-year-old former Nickelodeon star and musician, whose legal name is Jared Drake Bell, was detained by police in Cleveland, Ohio on Thursday, June 3 and later released after posting a $2,500 bond, according to court records obtained by E! News. At his arraignment that day at Cuyahoga County Court, he pleaded not guilty after being indicted on one count of attempted endangering children, a fourth-degree felony, and one count of disseminating matter harmful to juveniles, a first-degree misdemeanor, a Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson told E! News on Friday, June 4.

In his indictment, filed on May 21 and obtained by E! News, Bell was accused of committing the alleged crimes on or around Dec. 1, 2017 against a 15-year-old girl at a Cleveland nightclub. The prosecutor’s office spokesperson told E! News that a police investigation “revealed that the victim, who had established a relationship with Bell several years prior, attended his concert in December 2017. While there, Bell violated his duty of care and, in doing so, created a risk of harm to the victim. The investigation also revealed that months leading up to the concert, Bell sent the victim inappropriate social media messages.”

Bell posted on Twitter in October 2017 that he was set to perform on Dec. 1 of that year at a Cleveland nightclub, which is located on the same street as the venue decribed in the indictment, local TV station FOX 8 News reported. His tweet has since been deleted.

The prosecutor’s office spokesperson told E! News that the alleged victim filed a report about the incident with her local police department in Canada in October 2018 and that Canadian authorities contacted the Cleveland Division of Police, who then launched their recent inquiry.

FOX 8 News reported that Bell has agreed to have no contact with the alleged victim and was asked to submit DNA, which is a standard practice in Ohio.

Cleveland Police released a booking photo of Bell, showing him wearing a black suit. A remote pre-trial conference has been scheduled for June 23.

Bell’s attorney Ian Friedman told McClatchy News through a spokesperson that “the facts will be revealed in the court room.” He declined to comment about the case when reached by E! News.

Bell rose to fame in the early ’00s with parts in the Nickelodeon comedy sketch show The Amanda Show starring Amanda Bynes and later, the sitcom Drake & Josh, which also starred Josh Peck from the previous series, as well as Miranda Cosgrove. The latter show aired from 2004 to 2007 and spurred three spinoff TV movies.

In recent years, Drake has concentrated on both music and acting. He has performed voice work for animated films and TV shows, such as Ultimate Spider-Man, and also competed on the reality shows SplashCupcake Wars and The Challenge: Champs vs. Stars.
