    A star is born!

Kataluna Enriquez, who was recently crowned Miss Nevada USA, just made history as the first openly transgender woman to win the title. She will also become the first transgender woman to compete in the 2021 Miss USA pageant. The 27-year-old beauty queen won the competition on Sunday, June 27 at the South Point Hotel Casino in Las Vegas.

Making Kataluna’s trailblazing win all the more special? She earned the Miss Nevada title during Pride month. Taking to Instagram on Monday, June 28, she celebrated her victory with a heartwarming message.

“To my pageant mommy @rissrose2, no words can describe how much I am grateful of you,” Kataluna began her post, posing alongside her pageant coach and Miss Nevada Teen USA winner, Noelani Mendoza. “For your constant support, for welcoming me in to your home, and feeding me nothing but love.”

Many congratulated the pageant queen on her win, including the Miss Nevada USA Instagram account.

“Good Morning W O R L D! The Universe rather…. Congratulations to @mskataluna for her historical win!!!” the organization shared, with RuPaul’s Drag Race star Alexis Mateo adding, “She did it! congratulations @mskataluna Miss Nevada USA. First Trans Woman winner on her way to Miss USA.”

“Kataluna Enriquez being crowned Miss Nevada is a huge win for trans visibility and sends a powerful, but simple message to the world: trans women are women,” GLAAD’s Head of Talent Anthony, Allen Ramos, said in part.

“I’m so proud of Kataluna’s trailblazing win especially as a fellow trans Filipina sister,” trans model Geena Rocero shared in a statement with E! News. “This win will open doors for all pageant system to continuously advocate for the inclusion of trans women in all pageants not just in America but all over the world.”

In a separate Instagram post, Kataluna revealed that her evening gown, which featured vibrant rainbow-colored sequins and diamond embellishments, was a design she made from her couture line. She detailed its significance, writing, “In honor of pride month, and all of those who don’t get a chance to spread their colors.”

This isn’t Kataluna’s only historical victory. According to NBC News, she became the first transgender woman crowned in the Miss Silver State USA pageant in March, which is the preliminary competition for Miss Nevada USA.

Following her win, Kataluna, who is Filipina American, opened up about her pageant journey in an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Per the outlet, she originally participated in transgender pageants in 2016, but began competing in cisgender pageants at the beginning of 2020.

“I wanted to share my story and present that I was more than just a body,” she said. “With pageantry, people think it is only about beauty. But it’s how you present yourself, what you advocate for, what you’ve done and the goals you have.”

She added, “One thing that is important for me is inclusivity, diversity and representation. It’s something I did not have growing up and is still lacking in today’s world.”

The publication reported that during Kataluna’s Q&A portion of the Miss Silver State USA pageant, she discussed the challenges she’s faced over the years and how she’s persevered.

“Growing up, I was often told that I was not allowed to be myself, or to be in spaces that I was not welcome,” she answered. “One of the obstacles I encounter every day is just being true to myself. Today I am a proud transgender woman of color. Personally, I’ve learned that my differences do not make me less than, it makes me more than. And my differences is what makes me unique, and I know that my uniqueness will take me to all my destinations, and whatever I need to go through in life.”

Las Vegas Raiders' Carl Nassib Makes History as NFL's First Active Openly Gay Player

Las Vegas Raiders' Carl Nassib Makes History as NFL's First Active Openly Gay Player

  • Football player Carl Nassib said he's experiencing "gratitude and relief" after coming out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Keep reading for his pledge to cultivate a more "compassionate" world.
  • NFL star Carl Nassib is celebrating Pride Month with a historic announcement.

The Las Vegas Raiders defensive end publicly came out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community on Monday, June 21, becoming the first-ever athlete to do so while an active member of the league.

“Right now, I am sitting in a moment of gratitude and relief,” he started his Instagram post. “Sadly, I have agonized over this moment for the last 15 years. Only until recently, thanks to my family and friends, especially Connor, Cason, and Francis, did it seem possible for me to say publicly and proudly that I’m gay.”

Nassib thanked the NFL, his coaches and teammates “for their support,” writing, “I would not have been able to do this without them. From the jump, I was greeted with the utmost respect and acceptance.”

The 28-year-old then acknowledged those who may not share in his positive experience, before adding, “I stand on the shoulders of giants, incredible people who paved the way for me to have this opportunity. I do not know all the history behind our courageous LGBTQ community, but I am eager to learn and to help continue the fight for equality and acceptance.”

In a separate video shared alongside his statement, Nassib recognized the importance of representation within sports such as football and shared his decision to donate $100,000 to The Trevor Project, a non-profit that focuses on suicide prevention among LGBTQ+ youth.

As he explained, “I’m a pretty private person so I hope you guys know that I’m really not doing this for attention. I just think that representation and visibility are so important. I actually hope that, like, one day, videos like this and the whole coming-out process are just not necessary.”

Until then, Nassib said he’s dedicated to cultivating a more “accepting” and “compassionate” culture.

The Twitter account for the Las Vegas Raiders, which Nassib joined in 2020 under a reported $25 million contract, re-posted his statement and wrote, “Proud of you, Carl.” Additionally, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell celebrated Nassib’s news.

“The NFL family is proud of Carl for courageously sharing his truth today. Representation matters,” a statement read. “We share his hope that someday soon statements like his will no longer be newsworthy as we march toward full equality for the LGBTQ+ community. We wish Carl the best of luck this coming season.”

Long before Nassib came out, another NFL player—Michael Sam—did in 2014. At the time, Sam was drafted to the Saint Louis Rams, but was not yet an active player in the league. Sam’s coming out was historic in that he was the first drafted NFL player to share that he was part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Meghan Markle's Dad Thomas Markle Comments on Baby Lili and Makes Accusation About Oprah

Meghan Markle's Dad Thomas Markle Comments on Baby Lili and Makes Accusation About Oprah

  • Meghan Markle's father Thomas Markle commented on the birth of his granddaughter and spoke negatively about Oprah Winfrey following her interviews with his estranged daughter and Prince Harry.

Meghan Markle‘s father Thomas Markle has expressed hope of reconciling with his estranged daughter and her husband Prince Harry‘s and meeting both their kids, including their newborn daughter, Lilibet “Lili” Mountbatten-Windsor.

In a new interview, the 76-year-old reiterated an apology to the couple over their family rift while also accusing Oprah Winfrey of exploitation following her bombshell interview with the pair in March and a separate sit-down with Harry for an Apple TV+ series, both of which have fueled a massive PR crisis for the royal family.

During their joint sit-down, a pregnant Meghan and Harry voiced criticism of the monarchy, which they left more than a year ago. They also told Oprah they were expecting a baby sister for 2-year-old son Archie Harrison. Lili was born earlier this month in Southern California, less than five hours away from Thomas’ beachfront home in Mexico. In his interview with Australian TV show 60 Minutes, broadcast in full on Sunday, June 13, Thomas revealed how he found out about his granddaughter’s birth.

“No phone calls,” the 76-year-old retired Hollywood lighting director said. “I just heard it on the radio.”

Lili is named after both Queen Elizabeth II and Harry’s late mother Princess Diana. “Lily is a perfect name,” Thomas said, “and the other thing that makes me happy is now there’s a lot more Markle blood in the royal family. All I can say is I hope I get to eventually, sometime see these grandchildren of mine because I’m a pretty good grandpa.”

During her interview with Oprah, Meghan discussed her difficulties acclimating to life as a member of the monarchy, revealing that she at one point felt suicidal as a royal. She also shocked the interviewer—and millions of viewers—when the couple said an unnamed family member expressed “concerns” over the skin color of their future first child. When asked about it, Harry’s brother Prince William later said their family was not racist.

“The only person benefitting from this is Oprah Winfrey,” Markle said on 60 Minutes. When asked if he thinks the TV mogul is exploiting Meghan and Harry, he replied. “Yes, I do…that’s just my opinion. It seems to me she’s pushing it to get more and more out of it.”

Thomas also said he thought Harry and Oprah’s Apple TV+ mental health docu-series The Me You Can’t See, in which the duke detailed his wife’s struggles and also criticized his royal upbringing in a solo interview, is a “setup.”

“I think she’s patting herself on the back and making a lot of money on this,” he said. “I think Harry’s being put into a position where he’s saying things he’ll never be able to take back…I’m not attacking Oprah but I really think Oprah’s taking advantage of Harry.”

    photos
How Meghan Markle Forever Changed the Royal Family

Neither Meghan, Harry nor Oprah has responded to Thomas’ comments, which also come two months after he drove up to the TV personality’s Montecito, Calif. home, located not far from the Sussex’s, and left with a security guard a letter in which he requested she grant him an interview as well.

“I left a letter for Oprah with my phone number and email and I said, ‘Give me a chance to tell my story,” he said on 60 Minutes. “I said, it’s not fair to tell [their] story without hearing my story. I got no response.”

Thomas explained he would never show up at his daughter’s doorstep uninvited. “I’d never do that,” he said. “That makes me a stalker. I’m not a stalker.”

He also reiterated that he has not spoken to Meghan or Harry since two days before their 2018 royal wedding, after he drew controversy by posing for staged paparazzi photos that the tabloids released just before the nuptials. In an August 2018 Mail on Sunday interview, the duchess’s dad confessed to initially lying to Harry about posing for the pictures, saying he told him he was “being measured for a hoodie.”

    Harpo Productions/ Photographer: Joe Pugliese

“If I am [to blame for the estrangement], tell me why and how I’ll fix it. I’ll try to fix it,” Thomas said on 60 Minutes. “As always, I do love you and I wish we could sit down and talk about it. I’m not an ogre.”

He later added, “July 18th, I’ll be 77 years old. Most of the Markle men don’t make it much past 80. So there’s a good chance I might never seen my grandchildren. I’m not looking for pity. I’m just saying that’s a reality.”

Jessica Chastain Makes Shocking Transformation Into Televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker for New Role

Jessica Chastain Makes Shocking Transformation Into Televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker for New Role

  • Jessica Chastain truly embodied televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker on the set of her upcoming biopic The Eyes of Tammy Faye. See the jaw-dropping photos here!
  • Jessica Chastain is showing people a different side of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker.

Tammy Faye became a popular figure in religious communities after she and husband Jim Bakker, who is portrayed by Andrew Garfield, started the television program The PTL Club in the ’70s. But Tammy Faye didn’t reach mainstream popularity until Jim was convicted on numerous counts of fraud and conspiracy in 1989. Additionally, he was accused of raping church secretary Jessica Hahn.

Following the fallout of Jim’s actions, as well as their divorce, Tammy Faye was ostracized by critics near and far. As Jessica told People, “People were always making her into a clown and punishing her for the mistakes of her husband, which all throughout history women have been the victim of, atoning for the sins of men.”

Now, Jessica wants to portray Tammy Faye as the human she is, flaws and all, in the upcoming movie The Eyes of Tammy Faye

    Stars’ Epic Hair Transformations

Jessica pointed out that Tammy Faye did more than people give her credit for, explaining how the preacher embraced the LGBTQ community when it wasn’t widely accepted by religious communities.

“That’s really why I wanted to make the movie,” Jessica confessed. “Because in a time when people were even afraid to say AIDS, we had this female televangelist. And she was a minister too in her own right. She wasn’t just the preacher’s wife, the singer.”

For more on Jessica’s transformation into the popular figure, scroll on!

    Lights, Camera, Action

According to Chastain, it took her four hours to transform into Tammy Faye. She said, “I have a dimple in my chin that she didn’t have, so we would seal that up. Her face was more round than mine, so I would have things on my cheeks.”

    Who Is Tammy Faye?

Jessica hopes people finish the movie with a better understanding of Tammy Faye. “I just want people to leave the theater feeling like she was there, and she did throw her arms around everyone,” she shared.

    Motherly Love

Jessica was amazed by the televangelist, telling People, “The thing I loved the most about Tammy is her capacity to love. She knew what it felt like to not feel important, and she didn’t want anyone to experience that.”

    The Preacher’s Wife

For 10 years, Jessica researched everything there was to know about Tammy Faye, who died in 2007 following a battle with cancer.

    Mr. and Mrs. Bakker

Jessica said that contrary to popular opinion, Tammy wasn’t an overly emotional person. She remarked, “Here’s a woman that I had an idea of because of what I was fed about her. Even the thing about the mascara running down her face. There is not one picture of her with mascara running down her face in reality.”
