Murder Charges Dropped Against Simone Biles' Brother Nearly 2 Years After Arrest

According to court documents obtained by E! News, a judge acquitted Simone Biles' brother Tevin Biles-Thomas of murder. Get the latest on the case.

Murder charges filed against Simone Biles‘ brother have been dismissed.

According to court documents obtained by E! News, a judge acquitted Tevin Biles-Thomas of murder, voluntary manslaughter and additional charges during a hearing held in Cuyahoga County, Ohio on Tuesday, June 15.

“We have nothing but gratitude to the court for their attention to detail and making a correct decision in the face of absolute tragedy,” Tevin’s attorney Joseph Patituce shared with E! News. “Tevin Biles-Thomas, his innocence was vindicated yesterday in court after being tried twice for this offense. We demonstrated there’s absolutely no evidence that he committed any crime let alone acted improperly.”

A trial was held last month and ended with a mistrial, prompting the defense to file a motion for judgment of acquittal.

According to CNN, a person in the gallery charged towards Tevin following the judge’s latest ruling. The individual was ultimately stopped by sheriff’s deputies.

“This was a horrible tragedy, three families lost three family members and you know, absolutely horrific. So, we understand emotions were running high,” Joe told the network on June 15. “But today, Tevin Biles was vindicated, what he’s waited to get for the last two and half years.”

Tevin’s attorney added that his client has maintained his innocence for so long “because he is frankly innocent of these charges and today, we were able to see that the state had absolutely no evidence that he was guilty of this offense.”

Back in August 2019, Simone’s older brother was arrested and charged with murder following three fatal shootings on New Year’s Eve. He would ultimately plead not guilty to murder among other charges.

While Simone has tried to focus on her Olympic goals, the gymnast previously spoke out on the case in a rare social media post.

“Still having a hard time processing last week’s news,” she shared on social media back in September 2019. “My heart aches for everyone involved, especially for the victims and their families. There is nothing that I can say that will heal anyone’s pain, but I do want to express my sincere condolences to everyone affected by this terrible tragedy.”

Tevin and Simone grew up together in Ohio and were adopted by their grandparents⁠, who Simone refers to as mom and dad⁠.

Simone Biles Becomes First Woman to Win 7th AllAround U.S. Gymnastics Title

Simone Biles is continuing to look unstoppable ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

The 24-year-old gymnast claimed her seventh-straight all-around title at the 2021 U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Ft. Worth, Texas on Sunday, June 6.

In doing so, she remained unbeaten at nationals since 2013 and became the first American woman to win the title seven times, breaking her tie with Clara Schroth Lombady, who competed in the late 1940s and early ’50s. Alfred Jochim (1925-30, 1933) is the only other American gymnast to collect seven titles.

During the weekend-long event, Simone compiled a total score of 119.650 and also took the titles in the vault, balance beam and floor, in addition to the all-around.

Suni Lee ended up in second place with 114.950, while Jordan Chiles, who is Simone’s training partner, landed in third with 114.450.

All three athletes are seen as increasingly likely to occupy three of the four slots on the U.S. team that will be gunning for its third-consecutive Olympic team gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games, which was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Olympic Trials for the team take place June 24 to 27.

“It’s really emotional, especially going into my second time doing an Olympic run,” Simone said after winning the title. “It’s really crazy, and I appreciate everyone that’s come out to watch and support us, especially after the year we’ve had.”

Among those congratulating the athlete on her special day was former Olympic teammate Aly Raisman, who tweeted, “Congrats @Simone_Biles proud of you!!!!”

At the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Simone picked up three individual gold medals and one bronze, in addition to the gold she won with the U.S. team. Her 30 total Olympic and World Championship medals rank her as the most-decorated American gymnast, and third-most in the world.

Belarus gymnast Vitaly Scherbo, who retired in 1997, is tops with 33 medals at the Olympics and Worlds, meaning Simone would need four medals in Tokyo to surpass him.
