Kate Middleton served up a stylish fashion moment at Wimbledon.

While tennis fans likely attended the tournament to see the athletes, it was the Duchess of Sussex’s surprise appearance on Friday, July 2, that totally turned heads. For the sporting event, Kate, the patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, donned a pleated navy polka-dot Alessandra Rich skirt paired with a Smythe blazer.

“With the tournament having to be cancelled last year, it’s amazing to see fans and players back inside these iconic grounds,” Kate and Prince William‘s social media accounts wrote on Friday, referencing Wimbledon’s 2020 cancellation due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

In addition to watching a match on the outer courts with tennis player Tim Henman, Kate visited one of the kitchens on the tournament grounds, where she prepared food and learned how the kitchen helped distribute 200 daily hot meals amid the health crisis.

Serena Williams' Regal Wimbledon Outfit Is More Proof She'll Always Be a Style Queen

Serena Williams' Regal Wimbledon Outfit Is More Proof She'll Always Be a Style Queen

  • Despite suffering an injury and retiring from the tournament, Serena Williams still looked every bit the reigning tennis queen at Wimbledon when she stepped out with a train attached to her outfit.

    All hail Serena Williams!

While her time at Wimbledon was unexpectedly cut short on Tuesday, June 29 as a result of an injury, the tennis icon proved her sartorial reign in the hearts of fans everywhere when she stepped out on the court in an outfit befitting a tennis queen.

Dressed in all white, Williams’ outfit featured a matching removable train, delivering that unapologetically fierce flair fans have come to expect from the fashion designer’s looks on the court. After all, who can forget the black tutu she rocked at the 2018 U.S. Open? Or the pink, red and black catsuit she more recently sported at the Australian Open in February?

Needless to say, her latest look has earned yet another spot in the Serena Williams Fashion Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, the powerful ensemble was offset by her premature and devastating retirement from the tournament in the first round of Wimbledon after suffering an injury during her first set against Aliaksandra Sasnovich

The 39-year-old pro was not the only tennis star faced with an early exit on Tuesday. Adrian Mannarino also retired during his match against Roger Federer after slipping and suffering an injury.

Williams was visibly emotional as she walked off the court, waving goodbye to stands of cheering fans expressing their support as she fought back tears.

“I was heartbroken to have to withdraw today after injuring my right leg,” Williams later wrote on Instagram. “My love and gratitude are with the fans and the team who make being on centre court so meaningful. Feeling the extraordinary warmth and support of the crowd today when I walked on – and off – the court meant the world to me.”

Meanwhile, Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian offered up a simple, yet perfectly fitting end note on social media: a photo of Williams with her train trailing behind her. The caption? A single crown emoji.

As a fan replied in a comment, “Queen energy, always.”
