    While we wait to watch the world’s greatest athletes compete at the Tokyo Olympics, we decided to get in the spirit with some of our favorite movies about, well, sports. Whether it’s NBA superstar and former Olympic gold medalist Michael Jordan battling cartoon aliens in Space Jam—or even Lebron James‘ take on the highly-anticipated HBO Max sequel—these films and TV shows will get you in the mood for the international sporting event. 

    After binging Stick It and Make It or Break It, we’ll basically be ready to show off our best Simone Biles gymnastics flips. That’s how training works, right? And yes, there are even biopics on some of our favorite Olympic athletes. Even look ahead to the Winter Games with Oscar-nominated film I, Tonya and laugh along during the figure skating parody Blades of Glory. There’s no competition here—watch all of the below picks to gear up for the big games.

    Make It or Break It

    The Freeform teen drama ran from 2009 to 2012, and followed fictional character Emily Kmetko (Chelsea Hobbs) after she receives a scholarship to attend a prestigious Olympics gymnast training center in Colorado. Between backstabbing foes and friends for life, the beloved series is rooted in its ensemble cast featuring Ayla KellJosie LorenCassandra Scerbo, Peri Gilpin and Candace Cameron Bure.

    Stick It

    The 2006 dramedy stars Missy Peregrym as a troubled teen who is forced to return to the world of elite gymnastics after getting in trouble with the law. Jeff Bridges plays the coach that harnesses her rebellious nature into team spirit.

    The Gabby Douglas Story

    Regina King plays Gabby Douglas‘ mother in this biopic of the “Fierce Five” gold medalist, portrayed by both Imani Hakim and Sydney Mikayla on her road to victory. Douglas even later plays herself after making history as the first Black person ever to be named Individual All-Around Champion in artistic gymnastics at the Olympic Games.

    Space Jam: A New Legacy

    Make it a double feature with Michael Jordan‘s iconic 1996 hit before streaming Lebron James‘ sequel, Space Jam: A New Legacy, out July 16 on HBO Max. Don Cheadle, Zendaya and NBA superstars Klay ThompsonAnthony Davis and Damian Lilliard co-star in the latest.

    Race

    This 2016 film centers on the historic victory of Jesse Owens (Stephan James) during the 1936 Olympics. Jason Sudeikis also stars as Owens’ coach, Larry Synder

    The Weight of Gold

    Michael Phelps, Sasha CohenAlpho OnoShaun White and more Olympians appear in this riveting HBO Max documentary about the mental health challenges Olympic athletes face.

    Touch the Wall

    This 2014 documentary captures how Olympic swimmer Missy Franklin was inspired by veteran athlete Kara Lynn Joyce to follow her dreams for gold.

    Without Limits

    Billy Crudup and Donald Sutherland are unrecognizable in this powerful 1998 film following the life of Olympic runner Steve Prefontaine and his relationship with legendary coach Bill Bowerman.

    Unbroken

    Based on the biography by Laura HillenbrandUnbroken follows the remarkable life story of Olympian Louis Zamperini who spent 47 days on a life raft after a plane crash, only to then be detained in a prison-of-war camp during WWII. Angelina Jolie directed this 2014 drama.

    Chariots of Fire

    The Oscar winner tells the real-life story of two British track athletes, Eric Liddell (Ian Charleston) and Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross), who overcome their differing religious backgrounds to compete in the 1924 Olympics.

    LFG

    The new doc LFG gives an inside look at the fight for equal pay both on and off the field for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team. Rachel Maddow interviews soccer champions Jessica McDonaldChristen PressMegan Rapinoe and more.

    Rising Phoenix

    This investigates the history of the Paralympic Games, which is the world’s third largest sporting event today. Real-life athletes Jean-Baptiste AlaizeRyley Batt, Tatyana McFadden and Ellie Cole appear in the film, as well as Invictus Games founder Prince Harry

    Miracle

    Miracle centers on the famed U.S. men’s ice hockey team that won the gold medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics. The American team’s victory over the favored Soviets earned the title “Miracle on Ice.” Kurt Russell plays the head coach, Herb Brooks, and fans can watch the 2004 film on Disney+.

    I, Tonya

    Margot Robbie stuns as disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding in this Oscar-nominated film, also starring Allison Janney and Sebastian Stan

    The Cutting Edge

    ’90s fashion, figure skating and a sports romance…what more does anyone need in a movie?! A spoiled figure skater (Moira Kelly) is paired with a former ice hockey player (D. B. Sweeney) for Olympic figure skating, and they quickly heat up the ice.

    Eddie the Eagle

    Taron Egerton stars as underdog ski jumper Eddie Edwards, who captivated audiences at the 1988 Winter Olympics while representing England. Hugh Jackman and Tom Costello co-star in the film.

    Peaceful Warrior

    A college gymnast’s life is changed after a chance encounter with a mysterious stranger in this 2006 drama starring Scott Mechlowicz and Nick Nolte

    Cool Runnings

    The classic film tells the touching story of a Jamaican bobsled team and their journey to the Winter Olympics. LeonDoug E. DougMalik Yoba and John Candy star in the hit 1993 movie.

    Blades Of Glory

    Will Ferrell and Jon Heder play rival figure skaters who are forced to compete as a couple after being permanently banned from the men’s singles competition at the Winter Olympics. The very funny cast includes Amy Poehler, Will ArnettNick Swardson and Craig T. Nelson

    Turning a fantasy into reality. 

    It’s never been easier to interact with all of your favorite films and characters in real life! Some of the most iconic movies of the past live on at Universal Theme Parks, allowing fans to re-experience the magic they felt when they were first introduced to flicks like Jurassic Park and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

    The best thing about visiting either Universal Studios Hollywood or Universal Orlando Resort is that you won’t just be getting a surface look at the various motion pictures around the parks. Nope—instead, you’ll become a part of a movie’s story through roller coasters, interactive 3D experiences and other rides!

    Take Men in Black: Alien Attack for example. As part of this ride, you’ll face off against a group of your fellow riders as you’re launched into the middle of New York City, which is under siege by aliens. 

    And there’s no forgetting all of the Harry Potter magic present at both U.S. theme parks.

    Orlando’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter has two lands, Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade, while Hollywood has Hogsmeade and the larger-than-life Hogwarts castle.

    Things are getting even more exciting this week with the opening of Universal Orlando’s new ride the Jurassic World VelociCoaster on Thursday, June 10. Park goers can soon feel the rush of the hunt as you race alongside the raptor paddock and other predators, twisting and soaring through the jungle high above land and water.

    As you rush to get in line for the VelociCoaster, let us transport you into more movie worlds created by King Kong, the Fast & Furious franchise, Transformers and so many more.

    The Jurassic World VelociCoaster

    Opening June 10, 2021, Universal Orlando’s VelociCoaster is the apex predator of roller coasters! Feel the rush of the hunt as you race alongside the raptor paddock and other predators, twisting and soaring through the jungle above land and water.

    The Flight of Hippogriff

    Location: Universal Studios Hollywood & Universal’s Islands of Adventure (Universal Orlando Resort)

    Film: Harry Potter franchise

    A rollercoaster that the whole family can enjoy, this ride takes you through the pumpkin patch and past Hagrid’s hut as you approach a Hippogriff.

    Jurassic World: The Ride

    Location: Universal Studios Hollywood

    Film: Jurassic World

    Jurassic Park: The Ride operated at the Hollywood location from 1996 to 2018, and then it was re-themed based on the 2015 film Jurassic World and its 2018 sequel Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The new ride features larger, more realistic dinosaurs and other technological improvements. 

    Skull Island: Reign of Kong

    Location: Universal’s Islands of Adventure (Universal Orlando Resort

    Film: King Kong franchise

    It’s hard to miss this ride as it features a giant sculpture of King Kong! Once inside and aboard the expedition truck of your choice, you’ll venture in to the jungle and face the wrath of prehistoric predators, fearsome creatures and of course, Kong himself.

    Transformers: The Ride-3D

    Location: Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Florida (Universal Orlando Resort)

    Film: Transformers franchise

    A thrill like no other, this 3D dark ride puts riders in the middle of the ultimate war zone, fighting alongside Optimus Prime. Flight simulation technology and 3D HD media make the experience all too real!

    Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringott’s

    Location: Universal Studios Florida (Universal Orlando Resort)

    Fim: Harry Potter franchise

    One of the main attractions of Universal Studio Florida’s Diagon Alley is the thrill ride Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringott’s. While traversing through cavernous passageways that lead deep underground, you’ll encounter Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

    But that’s not all! You’ll also come face to face with villains Voldemort and Bellatrix, as well as trolls and other creatures that stand between you and a safe return to Diagon Alley.

    Men in Black: Alien Attack

    This isn’t your typical ride—in fact, it’s pretty interactive! You’ll face off against a group of your fellow riders as you’re launched into the middle of New York City, which is under attack by aliens. Think laser tag, but much more fun.

    Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey

    Take a scenic ride through Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where you’ll get a glimpse of Dumbledore’s office, encounter the Whomping Willow and a horde of Dementors and witness a Quidditch match!

    Revenge of the Mummy

    Location: Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Florida (Universal Orlando Resort)

    Film: The Mummy franchise

    Prepare for darkness! This indoor ride eventually plunges you straight down into a pitch-black abyss as you try to flee from the evil Mummy Imhotep. 

    Despicable Me Minion Mayhem

    Location: Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Florida (Universal Orlando Resort)

    Film: Despicable Me franchise

    This computer-animated simulator ride takes you on a journey with Despicable Me characters Gru, his daughters and the Minions. Riders get a first-hand look at Gru’s super villain laboratory, a Minion-inspired dance party and much more.

    Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure

    Location: Universal’s Islands of Adventure (Universal Orlando Resort)

    Film: Harry Potter franchise

    One of the newer rides at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Universal’s Florida location, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure allows you to fly deep into the Forbidden Forrest. While dipping into an endless pit of Devil’s Snare or being placed in the sights of a centaur’s bow, riders will come face to face with creatures ranging from the three-headed dog to Cornish Pixies.

    The Cat in the Hat

    Location: Universal’s Islands of Adventure (Universal Orlando Resort)

    Film: The Cat in the Hat

    Disappear into this classic Dr. Seuss story as you swerve through vividly re-created scenes with colorful characters and crazy motion as you twist from room to room!

    Jurassic Park: The Ride

    Location: Universal’s Islands of Adventure (Universal Orlando Resort)

    Film: Jurassic Park

    No promises you won’t get splashed on this coaster! Researched and built when Steven Spielberg‘s Jurassic Park was still in production, the water-based ride is a park classic.

    Fast & Furious: Supercharged

    Location: Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Florida (Universal Orlando Resort)

    Film: Fast & Furious franchise

    The rides are similar for the most part, though Florida’s is a stand-alone while the Hollywood version is part of the Studio Tour. Both feature Fast & Furious characters like Dom and Hobbs, in addition to engaging riders in an immersive experience that takes place within the franchise’s world.

    Pteranodon Flyers

    Location: Universal’s Islands of Adventure (Universal Orlando Resort)

    Film: Jurassic Park

    Take flight underneath the 10-foot wings of a Pteranodon on this kid-friendly ride and you’re guaranteed amazing views of the theme park.

    E.T. Adventure

    Location: Universal Studios Florida (Universal Orlando Resort)

    Film: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

    Hop aboard your very own flying bicycle with E.T. in the front basket and zip past NASA and police officials as they try to track him down before he can save his dying home planet!

    Shrek 4-D

    Location: Universal Studios Florida (Universal Orlando Resort)

    Film: Shrek 4-D

    Shrek 4-D, a prequel to Shrek 2 set right after the events of Shrek, is a mini movie that plays as part of this ride of the same name. However, riders aren’t just watching the film the old fashioned way—instead, they don OgreVision glasses, which, with the help of special effects, allows them to see, hear and feel what’s happening.
