Checking In on the OG Gossip Girl Cast Ahead of the HBO Max Premiere

Checking In on the OG Gossip Girl Cast Ahead of the HBO Max Premiere

  • A lot has changed since Gossip Girl said her final "XOXO." For starters, Leighton Meester married Adam Brody and welcomed two kids, while Blake Lively gave birth to three daughters with Ryan Reynolds.
  • Watch: “Gossip Girl” Reboot Trailer Is Even Steamier Than We Expected

It’s been nearly 15 years since Kristen Bell‘s all-knowing Gossip Girl first brought us into the worlds of Lonely Boy, Queen B and Little J. We became infatuated with (and sometimes grossly disturbed by) their lives of luxury and lies.

Now, HBO Max is starting Gossip Girl‘s next chapter with the reboot’s premiere on Thursday, July 8. The all-new cast includes Jordan Alexander, Eli Brown, Thomas Doherty, Tavi Gevinson, Emily Alyn Lind, Evan Mock, Zion Moreno, Whitney Peak and Savannah Lee Smith, with Bell lending her voice again.

The first trailer already gave fans a peek at what’s in store. Hint: It includes as much sexual tension and drama as always. “She is a stranger who has found herself in your friend group,” warned one character, “with your boyfriend.” And yes, the steps of the Met are still the preppy teens’ go-to spot.

As HBO Max prepares to welcome us back into the scandalous lives of Manhattan’s elite, it’s time to check in on the O.G. cast. Where are Penn Badgley, Ed Westwick, Taylor Momsen and the rest of the legendary Upper East Siders today?

Everything to Know About the New Gossip Girl

For besties Serena and Blair, the past decade marked a new journey for the actresses in their personal lives. Just two months before Gossip Girl‘s finale, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds tied the knot. Two years later, Leighton Meester married our O.C. crush (that would be Adam Brody). Now, both of The CW stars are moms!

Here’s what the actors behind Dan, Nate, Chuck, Jenny, Vanessa and even some of the show’s buzziest guest stars are up to now.

    Blake Lively

The actress, who portrayed It Girl Serena van der Woodsen, has been keeping very busy since the end of Gossip Girl. A few months prior to the 2012 finale, Lively tied the knot with actor Ryan Reynolds and they’re now the proud parents to three daughters: James, 6, Inez, 4, and Betty, who is about 22 months old. In recent years, the 33-year-old has starred in hit movies The Age of AdalineThe Shallows, A Simple Favor and The Rhythm Section.

    Penn Badgley

Lonely Boy no more! Badgley, who portrayed Dan Humphrey (who, spoiler alert, was ultimately revealed to be Gossip Girl) on the CW show, has been making headlines for his turn as stalker Joe Goldberg on the hit Netflix series You.

On a more personal note, Badgley, 34, is also a married man. The actor tied the knot with Domino Kirke, the sister of Girls actress Jemima Kirke, in Feb. 2017. They welcomed their first baby together in August 2020. Of course, fans of GG remember Badgley and Lively dated during the show’s early run before splitting in 2010.

    Leighton Meester

The actress, who portrayed Blair Waldorf, has been making a splash in the comedy world in recent years, starring in ABC’s Single Parents.

Meester married actor Adam Brody (aka The O.C.‘s Seth Cohen) and they’re parents of a daughter named Arloborn in 2015, and a son, born in 2020.

In May 2019, when asked about possibly returning for a GG reboot, Meester told E! News, “No one’s every talked to me about it except for in interviews and I always say the same: I never say never, so I don’t know. No one’s sent me that information, it’s coming from you.”

    Chace Crawford

For six seasons, viewers swooned over Crawford’s character Nate Archibald. Since the 2012 finale, Crawford has starred in ABC’s Blood & Oil, as well as films Eloise and All About Nina. Crawford, 35, now stars in the Amazon original series The Boys

    Ed Westwick

Westwick rose to fame as Chuck Bass and after hanging up his character’s signature scarf, the 34-year-old went on to appear in 2013’s Romeo & Juliet and star in 2015’s shortlived ABC drama Wicked City. He also starred in the British TV series White Gold.

In the fall of 2017, the Los Angeles Police Department started an investigation into sexual assault allegations made by several women against Westwick, which he denied. In July 2018, the Los Angeles County District Attorney declined to prosecute Westwick the British actor after determining there wasn’t enough evidence to file charges in two instances and a third accuser failed to cooperate with investigators.

    Taylor Momsen

Little J has come a long way since her days trying to snag a place in Blair’s crew. Momsen was just 14 when she starred as Jenny Humphrey on Gossip Girl, though she left the show in 2010 as music was her ultimate passion from an early age. She went on to form and front her band The Pretty Reckless when she was 17. They have released four studio albums.

“The thing that made me the happiest is when I finally quit,” the now-27-year-old explained of her decision to exit the hit series in a recent interview with Metro.co.uk. “And I could focus on my true passion, and the thing I really always wanted to do with my life.”

    Jessica Szohr

Szohr burst onto the Hollywood scene with her breakout role as Vanessa Abrams in GG. Since that time, the actress has appeared in films The Internship, Ted 2 and Two Night Stand. She’s also been on TV shows Kingdom, Shameless and The Orville.

The 36-year-old gave birth to daughter Bowie Ella with hockey pro boyfriend Brad Richardson in January 2021.

    Kristen Bell

Will Bell return as the voice of Gossip Girl in the reboot? That’s one secret we can tell, as it was confirmed in November 2019 that she would be returning to provide the titular blogger’s snarky narration in HBO Max’s upcoming series.

Since the finale in 2012, the Veronica Mars star tied the knot with longtime love Dax Shepard, with whom she shares two daughters Lincoln, 8, and Delta, 6. In the acting world, the 40-year-old starred in Hulu’s Veronica Mars revival and NBC’s The Good Place. Bell also fronted the Bad Moms films and voices Anna in Disney’s Frozen and Frozen 2

    Sebastian Stan

Remember when Bucky Barnes was on was on Gossip Girl? That’s right, the actor appeared in 11 episodes of the CW series as bad boy Carter Baizen from 2007 to 2010 and dated Leighton Meester during that time.

Since his time on the show, Stan, 38, has become a household name thanks to his role as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier in the Captain America and Avengers films. He recently starred on Disney+’s The Falcon and Winter Soldier opposite Anthony Mackie.

    Hilary Duff

It’s hard to believe it’s been a decade since Duff made a guest appearance on GG. In her six-episode arc, Duff appeared as Hollywood star Olivia Burke, who sparked a romance with Dan while at NYU and infamously engaged in a threesome with the not-so-Lonely Boy and his BFF Vanessa.

Since then, Duff starred in her own hit TV series, Younger. She was about to step back into Lizzie McGuire’s platform sandals for a Disney+ revival, but it didn’t work out due to differing creative visions.

In 2019, the “So Yesterday” singer married musician Matthew Koma, and they share daughters Banks, 2, and Mae, whom the couple welcomed in March 2021

She’s also mom to 9-year-old son Luca from her relationship with Mike Comrie.

Jordana Brewster Shares How She Honored Paul Walker in F9 at Film Premiere

Jordana Brewster Shares How She Honored Paul Walker in F9 at Film Premiere

  • Jordana Brewster spoke to E! News about the F9 movie and how she honored Paul Walker in the latest installment of the movie.
  • Watch: Jordana Brewster Confirms “F10” Will Begin Filming Soon

Jordana Brewster is revealing how close she and Paul Walker were to dating IRL.

At the F9 premiere, the Fast and Furious actress exclusively spoke to E! News about her late co-star, at which point the topic of crushes came up. As director Rob Cohen previously revealed, Paul had a crush on Jordana while filming the first movie and surprisingly enough, Jordana said she “didn’t know that.”

And if Jordana knew, things might have been different as she revealed she also had “a crush on him” in Fast and Furiousto 7. As for why she didn’t spill the beans, Jordana explained, “I never got to tell him that but I think on many levels he knew.”

The actress went on to marry Andrew Form in 2007, with whom she shares sons Rowan and Julian. But as always, the Fast and Furious family remains close to her heart, especially since she took a couple of accessories from Mia Toretto’s wardrobe.

As she told E! News, for the movie she had bracelets made for Mia “that said Brian, and then our kids’ names, which were Olivia and Jack,” confessing, “So, I took those two as mementos.”

And Jordana’s son Julian made his acting debut in the ninth installment of the franchise. So, as tradition dictates, he got to make an appearance on the red carpet, which the actress said was super exciting. “He has this really gorgeous suit and he’s ready,” the proud mom boasted. “He’s really excited.”

As for whether Julian will make an appearance in the 10th film, well, Jordana doesn’t know. She revealed the cast only gets the scripts “right before” they start filming.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, fans can see the latest installment F9 in theaters on June 25.

(E! and Universal Pictures are both part of the NBCUniversal family.)

Bridgerton Creator Teases a Saucy Season 2 Premiere

Bridgerton Creator Teases a Saucy Season 2 Premiere

  • In a sneak peek on social media, Bridgerton creator Chris Van Dusen revealed the rakish title for episode one of season two.
  • Watch: Phoebe Dynevor Breaks Silence on Rege-Jean Page’s “Bridgerton” Exit

This Bridgerton update will make you burn for season two.

On Monday, June 14, Bridgerton creator Chris Van Dusen took to Twitter to tease what’s to come for the new season. Specifically, in a sneak peek, Chris revealed the saucy title for episode 201 by sharing a photo of the first script.

The TV producer and writer shared, “‘Capital R Rake’ #Bridgerton #Season2 #ItsComing #ScriptsInTheWild”

We have a feeling this title is named after the season two leading man, Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey). Why do we think this? Well, for those who may not know, a “rake” is essentially the Regency era’s way of calling someone a f–k boy.

And, as we saw in season one, the young Viscount tends to be fun-loving and opposed to marriage. Yet, that may change come season two of the Netflix hit. Anthony will be taking center stage in season two, which will likely follow the plot of author Julia Quinn‘s second Bridgerton novel, The Viscount Who Loved Me.

15 Bridgerton Secrets and Easter Eggs

This means Anthony will find his perfect Viscountess—only to be derailed by his future bride’s sister. Back in February, in an interview with British Vogue, Jonathan dropped a few details about season two.

“Well, I feel like the campy, plush spectacle of the Bridgerton world is only going to get more pronounced in the best way possible,” he said at the time. “It’s mad, and it’s brilliant. There are also going to be a lot of brilliant characters introduced in this series—and it’s not just Anthony that we’re going to delve into…The robust universe that’s been set up by Shonda [Rhimes] and Chris [Van Dusen] will just expand and keep pushing boundaries in a way that’s quietly subversive. There’s just going to be more of what everyone loves, I think.”

He also promised a “load of little Easter eggs for all of the characters,” including bees. Jonathan’s bee tease certainly tracks as you can spot one in Chris’ new photo above.

    Bridgerton, Jonathan BaileyNetflix

Don’t forget, in the novels, the Bridgerton patriarch passed away after having a fatal allergic reaction to a bee sting. So, we’re definitely curious to see how bees play a part in season two.

You can find everything we know so far about Bridgerton‘s future by scrolling through the images below.

    The Next Lead

Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) takes center stage in season two as he attempts to settle down and finally takes his place at the head of the family. That involves getting married, and if the show is following the plot of the book The Viscount Who Loved Me, he finds the perfect wife but becomes distracted by her meddlesome older sister, Kate.

And yes, he will play Pall Mall. Pall Mall is basically croquet, and the book features a beloved scene in which Anthony and Kate play. It’s the only specific scene author Julia Quinn requested the show include.

    Meet the New Lord Bridgerton

It’s quite the shock that Lord Anthony Bridgerton is even considering marriage or owning up to his responsibilities. In fact, Bailey said he sees him as an example of why the oldest male shouldn’t just automatically get all the power.

“We’ve come quite far with the idea of equality between sexes, but there’s still a lot of conversations that need to be had about men in power,” he explained. “Hopefully, Anthony is someone who’s gonna make people realize that some men just don’t have what it takes.”

However, Bailey thinks he means well.

“With Anthony there’s just so much conflict with everything he’s doing,” he says. “He means so well and he’s got such a good heart and he loves his family and once I fell in love with him and realized that he meant well, that means that you can really push the boundaries as to how unfair and toxic he can be to his lovers and to his sisters and to his mother.”

No More Simon, But a New Romance to Swoon Over

Season one’s Simon (Rege-Jean Page) and Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) will be taking a backseat in season two after their happy ending at the end of season one. In fact, Page won’t even be appearing in the second season, while Daphne will still be around just to support her siblings. It also sounds like we might not miss the Duke and Duchess of Hastings quite as much as we fear we might.

Quinn doesn’t know exactly what’s happening in season two, but she could at least promise a heck of a romance.

“All I know is that, you know, having written the source material, I think we’re all going to be happy because they really set it up beautifully for all of us to really want Anthony to both win in life and get his comeuppance,” she tells E! News. “At the same time, and I think it’s gonna happen. His love interest just really is his match and it’s going to be great.”

    Meet Kate Sharma

Sex Education star Simone Ashley has been cast as Kate Sharma, the leading lady opposite Anthony. According to Netflix, Kate is a “smart, headstrong young woman who suffers no fools—Anthony Bridgerton very much included.” The book describes her as “the most meddlesome woman to ever grace a London ballroom.”

In April, Shondaland offered a new character description for the incomparable Kate: “Kate is equal parts headstrong and whip-smart. Her sharp wit and independent nature make her a singular force on the 1814 marriage mart, where she hopes to secure a love match for her younger sister, Edwina.”

    Meet Edwina Sharma

Edwina is Kate’s younger sister, and she’s who Anthony originally sets his sights on. She “has been taught by her older sister Kate to be the perfect debutante. She’s kind-natured and endlessly endearing. But while she may be young and naive, she also knows what she wants: a true love match.” She will be played by Charithra Chandran

    Meet Lady Mary Sharma

Lady Mary is Kate and Edwina’s mother. She is an Earl’s daughter whose marriage to a tradesman once embroiled her family in scandal. Now, Lady Mary has returned to London with her daughters “and is forced to endure the scrutiny of the ton yet again.” She is played by Shelley Conn.

    Who Is Theo Sharpe?

Calam Lynch has joined the show as Theo Sharpe, a character who is not known from the books. He is “a hardworking printer’s assistant” and “an intellectual who fights for the rights of all.”

    Who Is Jack?

Rupert Young will play Jack, a man who has no last name just yet. That might because this newcomer to the ton has “a connection to one of its most notable families.”

    Production Is About to Begin

After actor Luke Newton appeared to tease the cast’s return to set in March, he later clarified, “We haven’t actually started yet.” He added, “But everyone individually is getting ready and psyched up for season two.”

Edmund Bridgerton Is Joining the Cast

Rupert Evans, who stars on The CW’s Charmed, has joined the cast as Edmund Bridgerton, the late patriarch of the family. Fans of the books know that Edmund died due to an allergic reaction from a bee sting at age 38.

    Mr. Season 3?

If the show continues to follow the books, Benedict (Luke Thompson) will be next in line to find the love of his life. In An Offer From a Gentleman, he falls for a Cinderella-esque beauty at a masquerade ball, then gets confused by a housemaid.

So far on screen, the artsy Benedict has found himself at an orgy, learning how some men have secret gay relationships while also being married to their wives. By the end of the season, he was dating Madame Delecroix, the dressmaker.

    Mr. Season 4?

Colin (Luke Newton) gets his own story in Romancing Mister Bridgerton, and it shouldn’t be that big of a surprise if you’ve been watching the show. This is where Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) goes from best friend to something more, and it’s also where the Lady Whistledown reveal is technically supposed to happen.

Viewers, of course, already know Penelope’s big secret, but nobody else does. Viewers also know how Penelope pines for her friend Colin, and they’d be forgiven for already wondering if we really have to wait three more seasons to see their story play out.

    The Future of Lady Whistledown

We may know that Penelope is Lady Whistledown, but we do not yet know what this means for Penelope’s on-screen future. All we have is a promise from Coughlan and Claudia Jessie, who plays Pen’s BFF Eloise, that Eloise is going to be “pissed.”

“She loves her best mate so much, and also she’s properly in awe of Lady Whistledown,” Jessie said. “She’s like in love with Lady Whistledown. She wants to find her. I feel like the reason her quest seems so strong is because she’s always looking for a way out and Lady Whistledown is an example of that autonomy, earning her own money, being a badass, outing people. That’s Eloise’s cup of tea. And then she’s gonna find out it’s her best mate… carnage.”

    An Intricate Weaving

While Quinn’s books are “tightly focused,” she says, on her protagonists, the show has already given us hints of things to come way down the line—like, for instance, the slow burn of Penelope and Colin, whose story gets told in book four. Quinn says she never would have thought of it.

“From a writer’s point of view, it was fascinating and brilliant because, as I’m reading [the scripts], it was incredibly flattering because it was so clear to me that the writers had all read all the books and they were thinking so holistically about the whole thing,” she says. “They were bringing in things and hinting at things and potentially setting things up in a way that was so incredibly respectful of and honored the source material, but at the same time, you know, the changes that they made… it was so clear to me that that was the best thing to do for a television series.”

There’s one book for each Bridgerton sibling, and while eight seasons of Bridgerton might be a stretch, that doesn’t mean we have to miss out on any of the romance.

    Season 5 and Beyond?

The show has only been renewed through season four so far, and eight seasons is a lot to ask of a such a high-budget production with such a huge cast. But if we do get more stories beyond the first four books, there’s romance ahead for Eloise, Francesca, Hyacinth and Gregory, most of whom are currently small children. Those stories involve broken engagements, complete strangers falling in love and old family secrets, and we have to say we wouldn’t be mad if Bridgerton promised to continue long enough to make them happen.

Bridgerton season one is available to stream on Netflix.
