Jared Padalecki Says He's "Gutted" Over Exclusion From Jensen Ackles' Supernatural Spinoff

Jared Padalecki Says He's "Gutted" Over Exclusion From Jensen Ackles' Supernatural Spinoff

  • After Jensen Ackles announced his new Supernatural spinoff, former co-star Jared Padalecki claimed to have no idea the project was in the works.
  • Jared Padalecki doesn’t appear to be in a super mood that Jensen Ackles will be carrying on the Supernatural franchise without him.

The 38-year-old Gilmore Girls alum took to Twitter on Thursday, June 24 to share his apparent surprise that Jensen, his co-star for 15 seasons on The CW’s beloved drama, is developing a prequel series that he’s set to narrate as his character Dean Winchester, in addition to serving as a producer.

Several hours after Jensen, 43, posted a news article about the new project, titled The Winchesters, Jared quote-tweeted him and claimed to have had no idea the spinoff is in the works.

“Dude,” wrote the actor who played Dean’s brother, Sam Winchester. “Happy for you. Wish I heard about this some way other than Twitter. I’m excited to watch, but bummed that Sam Winchester had no involvement whatsoever.”

Fans were understandably confused by the message, as it seems hard to believe that Jared wouldn’t have been looped in. After all, what many fans loved about the original Supernatural series that signed off in November 2020 was the chemistry between the two leads.

However, when one social media user asked Jared if this was a joke, the Walker performer appeared to dismiss such speculation. “No,” the actor replied. “It’s not. This is the first I’ve heard about it. I’m gutted.”

Supernatural creator Eric Kripke, who is not involved in the spinoff, tweeted his support for the project and appeared to imply that scheduling issues had kept Jared from participating. Eric posted that the new show’s team has “the perfect people to make it” before adding as a parenthetical, “The other perfect person is too busy Texas Rangering.”

Jensen, who has to yet to respond publicly to Jared’s message, has appeared to have enjoyed a close working relationship with his former co-star. During a 2019 interview with Bustle, the star of The Boys shared that he and Jared “got into a really heated argument” while filming Supernatural‘s first season, but that this was their first and last real-life fight.

Clearly, Jared has warm feelings about the long-running series, as he posted a pic to Instagram last month showing himself reading a Supernatural fan magazine.

Also voicing thoughts on the same day about not being included in the spinoff was actor Misha Collins, known for playing angel Castiel. In response to Jensen’s announcement tweet, Misha responded, “Seems like this show would benefit from a time-traveling angel-in-a-trenchcoat character. Just saying…”

Back in December, all three actors participated in the show’s virtual reunion event to support Stacey Abrams‘ organization Fair Fight Action, which works to eliminate voter suppression.

The Winchesters, which is also being produced by Jensen’s wife, Daneel Ackles, is set to focus on the early years for Sam and Dean’s parents, John and Mary Winchester, to explain how their relationship came to be.

See the First Look of Jensen Ackles' Character on The Boys

See the First Look of Jensen Ackles' Character on The Boys

  • On Monday, June 7, Jensen Ackles shared a sneak peek at his costume on The Boys. Check it out here.
  • This is a super first look.

On Monday, June 7, Jensen Ackles took to Instagram to reveal his costume for season three of The Boys. In the new images, Jensen is seen wearing a dark green super suit covered in patriotic stars. And, thanks to the shield, the Supernatural alum‘s character, named Soldier Boy, is reminiscent of Marvel’s Captain America.

Now, is the character anything like Cap? Well, since Homelander (Antony Starr) is essentially a hybrid of Superman and Captain America with sociopathic tendencies, we’ll wait for season three to premiere before we make any assumptions.

Alongside the new pics, Jensen wrote, “My idea of a camouflage banana hammock got overruled. And I’m glad it did. I love this suit.” Co-star Jack Quaid supported the sneak peek by leaving four clapping emojis in the comments.

Prior to the June 7 reveal, the 43-year-old actor teased his costume by sharing a close-up look of the shield. Next to the pic, he shared, “Every dent, every scratch, every mark tells a story. A story that ends with me, winning.”

This update comes almost a month after Jensen shared a behind-the-scenes pic from the set of The Boys season three. In the post, Jensen sported a scruffy beard and posed in front of his trailer, which read “Soldier Boy.” For the caption, he simply penned, “Just another day at the ‘NEW’ office. Happy taco Tuesday, folks. @theboystv #SoldierBoy”

Back in August 2020, Jensen confirmed he was joining season three by uploading a video of himself catching The Boys comic book, which inspired the series, and looking it over. At the end, a title card flashed, “The Boys season 3.”

He also captioned the video, “I keep wondering what I’ll do….when @cw_supernatural finally ends this year. Then it hit me.”

As we mentioned, Jensen is playing Soldier Boy, who, according to Variety, is the original superhero. In addition to Jensen, Antony and Jack, The Boys stars Karl Urban, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Karen Fukuhara, Tomer Capon and more.

Seasons one and two of The Boys are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
